DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING (MECHANICAL)

MED651 SOLID MECHANICS
ASSIGNMENT 1
After completing this assessment, you will be able to:
I. Apply knowledge of engineering mechanics and material science to the structural
analysis of mechanical structures.
II. Identify and analyse well-defined engineering problems reaching substantiated
conclusions using analysis techniques of axial and torsional loaded members, beams and
columns

Question 1

The steel rod ABC is attached to rigid supports and is unstressed at a temperature of
25°C. The steel is assumed elastoplastic with E=200 GPa and 𝜎𝑦 =250 MPa. The
temperature of both portions of the rod is then raised to 150°C. Knowing that =
11.7 × 10−6 /°C, determine (a) the stress in both portions of the rod, (b) the deflection of
point C.

Question 2
The brass strip AB has been attached to a fixed support at A and rests on a rough
support at B. Knowing that the coefficient of friction is 0.60 between the strip and the
support at B, determine the decrease in temperature for which slipping will impend.
Question 3

Two solid shafts are connected by gears as shown. Knowing that G = 77.2 GPa for each
shaft, determine the angle through which end A rotates when 𝑇𝐴 = 1200 N.m.

Question 4

The couple M is applied to a beam of the cross section shown in a plane forming an angle 𝛽
with the vertical. Determine the stress at (a) point A, (b) point B, (c) point D.
Question 5

Two cover plates, each 7.5 mm thick, are welded to a W460× 74 beam as shown.
Knowing that 𝜎𝑎𝑙𝑙 = 150 MPa for both the beam and the plates, determine the required
value of (a) the length of the plates, (b) the width of the plates.
