Section C:

CAPTIONS (Part 1): This entry provides an overview of how technology can be integrated in Biology
and it identifies the modes used which are You Tube videos and Power points. Utilising a detailed
discussion between colleagues in Education to demonstrate how it can be incorporated in the
teaching of Diffusion and Osmosis (Potato Tubers).

1/Discussion with Peers;

1) A) Identify the technology skill or concept (Mode).

(i)PowerPoint Mode within Biology:

This mode will facilitate the introduction of a Laboratory skill, as it relates to the topic Nutrition and
Food tests. The power point will be used to identify the different types of food test methods,
projected outcomes or changes to various substances as they undergo the various food tests
(Reducing Sugar, Non- Reducing sugar, starch, lipids, proteins etc.) The power point will be able to
summarise and differentiate between the inference of a positive test or a negative test.

(ii) Resource media within Biology:

This medium, will be used as an alternative to the practical skill, conducting food tests on random or
named samples. The use of you tube videos can be used to demonstrate the methods and the
outcomes become more vivid to the students. Their pre- knowledge is now confirmed.

Script for Audio Discussion between Teachers (Introduction Part 1) A) (i) & (ii):

Karyn: “Hey Kaya; How are you? “

Kaya: ” I`m good and you?”

Karyn: “Boy, I`m in a sticky situation here. My school labs under renovations, so we have no access
to it.” “However, I want to the Osmosis lab with my students since we are on Diffusion and osmosis. I
honestly, don’t know what to do.”

Kaya: ” Well…. why don’t you do it as a demonstration?”

Karyn: “Boy..if I could I would but all the apparatus are locked away in the cupboard in the same
labs.” “Hmmm…. But a demonstration isn`t bad, maybe I could make it fun. I always wanted to
incorporate technology into my laboratory skills.” “I will do a power point to introduce the
concept/skill that is Food tests and I will also use Resource Media e.g. You tube videos.”

Kaya: “Yea, that sounding good!” “Teaching for the 21 st Century Boy!!”

Karyn: “laughs”
1) B) Describe how it will used and identify the significance and importance;

Script for Audio Discussion between Teachers (Use and Significance Part 1) B):

Karyn: “Tell me if this makes sense k.” “I will use the power point as a medium for the introduction
of food tests and an opportunity to provide the students with guided notes.” “I will structure it
under the same structure of a Lab that is, Title, Aim, Introduction of the Substances to be tested,
Apparatus and Materials, Methods, Results/ observations for Negative and positive outcomes and
Inferences (substance present or absent)..nah.”

Kaya: “Yea that’s a good idea, but how will they see the actual lab, if they can`t go in?” “Most
children learn and remember what they saw.”

Karyn: “I agree, so I will use resource media which also includes accompanying graphic organisers or
activities to facilitate this.” “I will use you tube videos of people carrying out an osmosis test on
potato tubers in an actual lab and using the listed apparatus and material.” “They would have been
introduced to this list from the power point lesson. “

Kaya: “Yea.. that way they will feel as though they are in the lab?”

Karyn: “Correct… and I would also be able to stress and replay all the important points within the lab
and explain analyse the importance of each step so students will understand why these steps should
be followed precisely.” “The use of the graphic organisers will be structured in a way to scaffold their
thinking and eventually allow them to provide justifications for the lengthening and shortening of
the potato tubers “This will be my type of formative assessments, nah boy”

Kaya: “You`ll let me know how it went. I think I want to try it as well. It’s a good alternative to the
traditional lab practicals.”

Karyn: “Not a problem, will keep you posted. Good bye.”

Script for Audio Discussion between Teachers (Effectiveness / Post Conference Part 1) B):

Kaya: “ Aye Karyn…!” “How did the class go?”

Karyn: “Boy… It was real good!”

Kaya: “Eh heh…. You did everything you said you`ll do?”

Karyn: ” Yip!”…… “And the students were completely engaged and focused.” “They were even more
engaged than if they had done it for themselves practically”

Kaya: “Really?”……. “Hmm… BUT how are you certain of this?” “I know children love to work with
their hands.”

Karyn: “Well I myself underestimated the power of technology.” “They love it, they love the fact that
it was a new teaching strategy and seeing that, they live in a more virtual world.” “They enjoyed the
opportunity to look at the videos and have timed activities which was developed around the videos.”

Kaya: “Hmm … like they welcomed that change?”

Karyn: “Oh yes!... and it was so refreshing to see. I gave them journals to write on their experience in
this lesson and the reviews spoke for itself.” “They appreciated the colourful and innovative way of
the power point as their notes, the use of gifs created humour as well.”

Kaya: “I like how this sounding… I feel I want to try this lesson wee”

Karyn: “Well I have no problem sending it for you… Imagine in the Diffusion and Osmosis Test we
gave them today”… “I was looking at a few of their response re diffusion and osmosis section and I`m
happy to report that technology can be integrated into a laboratory based concept.” “My students`
performance in that section of the test can act as certification of the technology effectiveness.”

Kaya: “Wait.. you still trying to convince me?” “I was already sold… when you said they fully enjoyed
it!”

Karyn: “OK..well let me not stick to send it… going to send you the lesson plan via email now.” “Let
me know when you get it…k!?”

Kaya: “Not seeing it yet, but I`m really excited to use it in my class as well.” “These Children always
telling they find labs to be boring. Maybe this might spice it up..!!”

Karyn: “Well this came in good timing for us both then?” “Lol… You let me know if you get it?”

Kaya: “Yea I did…thanks will give you feedback”

Karyn: “Alright nice, you`re welcome… Laterz!”
