Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer

 Type of composite material in which carbon constitutes the fiber phase

 High performance fiber polymer
 93-95% of carbon
 5-10 microns in diameter of each fiber
 Twice as stiff as steel and five times as strong as steel
 Used to make aircrafts, spacecraft parts, racing car bodies, etc.

Properties of CFRP

 High tensile strength

 Alkali resistant
 Light weight
 Corrosion resistant and chemically stable which makes it best suitable for rehabilitation
 High strength to weight ratio
 Very low thermal conductivity
 High ultimate strain, which makes it best suitable to earthquake resistant application
 Electrically, thermal resistance and is non-magnetic
 Fire resistant
 High abrasion and wear resistance

Advantages of Carbon Fiber

 High strength (400 KSI Tensile)

 Low weight (less than 0.5 pounds per sq. ft.)
 Corrosion resistance (pH 2 – pH 13)
 Thermal compatibility
 Excellent fatigue behavior
 Non-conductive (glass); conductive (carbon)
 Speed of construction
 Low cost

Disadvantages

 High initial cost

 Should be protected from UV radiation
 Composites must be dried before repair because all resin materials and some fibers absorb
moisture

Conclusion

 CFRP are thin, strong, flexible, corrosion-resistant and light-weight. These properties make this
technique suitable for all purpose compared to other conventional technique.
 High stiffness, high tensile strength, high chemical resistance, high temperature resistant and
fire resistant made CFRP one of the most popular material in retrofitting
 It possesses strength up to five times that of steel being one third of its weight
 Easy installation, speed of construction and increased resistance to deformation
