The author made Marjane to
experience internalized racism
as a result of her value of
wanting to fit in. By doing this,
Satrapi conveys the message of
how values transform someone.
Theme
Choose a theme in work and

theme.
A theme in the work is the way
in which society can impact a
person. Throughout the novel,
Marji as a young child has been
exposed to several traumatic
events. This worked to build her
growing identity, being one
which sought change. However,
this transformed when moving to
Europe. She experienced a
change in character when she
desired to fit in, as seen
throughout the novel.
Plot

the author crafts the work as a
whole.
An aspect of the plot is in the
point of view, or internal conflict,
that Marjane experiences when in
Europe. Once Marjane had
escaped her original lifestyle
when immigrating to a European
country, her outlook and
perspective on her beliefs had
shifted. Marjane was forced to
adapt to her new lifestyle,
especially as she sought to try to
fit in with those around her. She
developed a personal value of
remaining self sustaining and
wanting to “fit in”. This led to a
negative transformation of her
identity as she was able to turn a
blind eye to the suffering.
Global Issue
Identify and describe a global
issue that the author addresses in
the work. Then, list how the
author develops the global issue.
A global issue within the novel is
one of an identity change as a
result of harsh environments. For
example, when Marji was a child
and experienced a loss, she
resorted to shutting out her
religion and past identity to cope.
Later when she lived in Europe,
she witnessed instances of turmoil
in her old country but attempted
to ignore it. This shows an
identity change as she used to be
an active advocate for her
country. The idea of an identity
change to adapt to her
surroundings has therefore been
seen throughout the novel.
