Estimating and Costing of a building 2
Introduction

Quantity Surveying is a profession that dates back to the 18th century in the United Kingdom when

construction projects were measured and valued after they were designed and built. The “measurers” would

quantify and assign a value to the work after the building was constructed and then negotiate with the client

and architect on behalf of the tradesmen. The quantity surveying profession today has greatly evolved.

Today’s Quantity Surveyors are a key part of the construction, and financial management process,

including cost estimating and forecasting, cost management, construction techniques, and management,

procurement processes and contractual matters. Seeley (1997) stated that Quantity Surveyor is fully

professionally trained, qualified and experienced in dealing with the basic problems on behalf of the

employer.

Furthermore, Estimating is the most essential of the practical aspects of construction management,

anyone who is willing to insert on construction project, will be definitely disturb about the quantity and

cost. To fell release from them, a solution called estimate/estimation was delivered. Each phase of an

estimate may require different estimating input, methods, and techniques tools. As well as a though

knowledge of the construction procedures, cost of materials and labor.in addition to the skills, experiences,

foresight and good judgment.

Moreover, in preparing an estimate, the quantities of different items of work are computed by

simple mensuration method and from these quantities the cost is calculated. If the estimated is greater than

the money available, then attempts are made to decrease the cost by reducing the work or by changing the

specification. For a good estimate, the actual cost of the proposed work after completion should not exceed

5-6% from its approximate cost estimate.

Problem Statement

As previously defined, an estimate is a calculation of the quantities of various items of work, and

the expenses likely to be incurred thereon. The total of these probable expenses to be incurred on the work

is known as an estimated cost of the work, thus the awareness of the quantity and cost estimation is needed,

and has been seen crucial to project owner. Since building construction estimating is the determination of

probable construction costs of any given project. Numerous things impact and add to cost assessment. In

outline, there is a requirement for a superior comprehension of the reasons why amount and cost assessing

has been seen critical for the venture proprietor and how to decide precisely agreeing the crucial conditions

which impact the estimation as per the confinement place where the structure will yield on (impacts: for

example, climate, accessibility of laborers, and so on.). In that case, the following research questions need

to be addressed:

Why amount and cost estimation is significant for the undertaking proprietor?

What are the various kinds of estimation and techniques?

How exact is the estimation?

Objectives

This project involves the quantity and cost estimation of a G+2 residential building located in

Djibouti. The long long-term of this research paper is to provide the most accurate prediction possible of

the total required cost that will be necessary to complete the project. It points additionally to consider the

various sorts, and techniques and demonstrating which is appropriate in Djibouti. Then, a comparison

between the theoretical calculations and the practical values applied in the construction site would be

carried out. Finally, we tend to finalize this research by providing an estimated final cost summary for the

structural aspect. In order to reap our goal, the challenge must supply statistics on:

The variety of substances and labor costs.

Estimation of rough construction quantities and their costs.

Estimation of Ending works.

Methodology

Obtaining the objective of the project is related to going through different aspects. At first finding

the plan (electricity, plumbing, slab, column, etc…) of a G+2 building (ground +2 floors) which are

necessary to acquire all the calculations. Researches were divided into two types which are theoretical

researches and practical researches. Among the theoretical research are: visiting many sources on the

internet and navigating all around the keywords (estimation, cost, quantity) then researches performed in

the library which led to reading and consults plenty of books about quantity and cost estimation. Whereas

the practical researches were: visiting many playgrounds (construction field, hardware dealer) is required to

reveal labor cost and the cost of different equipment. Different engineers were visited to profit extra

information about cost and quantity estimation, questions like: “which method is used in Djibouti to

estimate the quantity and cost?” were asked to be a guideline for the project. After going throughout all of

this, an appointment was performed for collecting information and analyzing the data by checking for

missing information, removing outliers as well as categorizing and discussing the meanings of words,

phrases, sentences. Codes and deep supervision of data were considered to identify broad terms and

patterns.

Limitation

Each investigation, regardless of to what extent it takes to be led, has its restrictions. Right now,

impediments are enormous, because it is not quite easy to find the information on internet either on books.

In addition, knowledge on construction management is required to perform this project, which has not been

lectured in class. However, not only absence of data, poor records assortment and net association were the

encountered restrictions. Also debilitation, powerless mate connection as well as lethargy have also

contributed in hypothetical looks.

Preliminary literature review

A preliminary literature review of this study shows that the cost estimate for the project will be

determined to utilize the centerline strategy which is the fitting technique in Djibouti. For completing the

project, very popular Civil Engineering software such as AutoCAD, WinEst pro, and Excel has been used,

According to Frank R. Dagostino (2010), during the last 20 years, computers have revolutionized

estimating. With the advent of cheap personal computers simple to use AutoCAD for drawing and

conceptualized the plan of our building, simple to use a spreadsheet in Excel for a basic and accurate

calculation of estimating. Notwithstanding that, specific assessing programming, which plays a central job

in the evaluating procedure, is WinEst star programming (otherwise called the name of take-off software).

Conclusion

Cost and amount estimation has become a significant piece of development of designing these

estimations require the suggestion of strategy for figuring and information dependent on development

system. This archive has proposed assessment of the strategies and their utilization in the field of

development. The proposed research will accomplish the accompanying objectives: disclosing the criteria

important to settle on the choice on the pre-owned strategy for count, and decide cost and amount

estimation. The impacting component, for example, the climate, accessibility of laborers, exhausting,

tremor, etc., ought to be considered on other comparable research?
