EFFECTIVE PARENTING
Effective parenting is essential for the bringing of productive, respectful citizens.
Some important skills every parent should possess:
1) Disciplinary Skills - There are many methods of discipline which parents can use to teach and
guide children. Knowledge of these methods and ability to successfully choose the appropriate
method is central to a parent being a successful disciplinarian. Parents should also reward
children for good behaviour or their successes. Parents can implement the following:
 Set rules and regulations for the children
 Insist on the practice of proper behavior at all times (home and out of home)
 Praise children for their efforts
2) Communication Skills – Open communication is key to a healthy relationship between
parents and their children. Young children maybe unable to communicate or have limited
communication skills. Parents must therefore anticipate their needs and pay attention to their
child’s body language. Here are a few ideas on effective communication:
 Be clear about the message to be communicated
 Get feedback to ensure that the message communicated was understood.
 Communication lines need to be open – two way communication between parent and
child
3) Problem Solving Skills - A good parent is proactive and puts systems in place to prevent
problems before they occur. This is done by setting rules for the family members and constantly
enforcing them. When problems do arise parents can practice the following:
 Pros and cons of each solution
 Teach children to treat people how you would like to be treated
 Always communicate with each party involved and come up with a solution together
4) Socialization Skills – The success parents have in carrying out the function of socialization
depends on their ability to lead through example and direction. Parents must be clear in telling
children what is required of them in terms of behavior. The following strategies work well for
parents who need to be effective in the proper socialization of their children:
 Attitudes and values (respect, non-violence, truthfulness etc.) are much more “caught
than taught”. Parents therefore transfer these values to their children by being good role
models.
 Good parents reinforce values taught at home by involving the children in the activities of
the church, temple or mosque.
 Good parents possess the skill to discipline children and enforce appropriate sanctions to
infractions (breaking) of rules without fear or favour.
6

5) Emotional/ Psychological Skills - Ability to show love, warmth and deal with emotional
issues. Parents who do not help children to deal with emotional challenges can inhibit (prevent)
their development. The children may look elsewhere for comfort in times of need. This could
lead a vulnerable child into dangerous situations such as illegal activities.
