(Eighteen Long Verses Summarizing Lord Kåñëa’s Våndävana-lélä)

jéyän näma murärer prema-marandasya navyam aravindam


bhavati yad-äbhäso ’pi sväti-jalaà mukti-muktäyäù

jéyät—all glories; näma—to the holy name; muräreù—of Lord Kåñëa;


prema—of pure love; marandasya—of the nectar; navyam—new;
aravindam—lotus flower; bhavati—is; yat—of which; äbhäsaù—the dim
reflection; api—even; sväti-jalam—a tiny drop of water; mukti—of liberation;
muktäyäù—of the pearl.

All glories to the holy name of Lord Kåñëa, which is a new lotus flower
filled with the nectar of pure love. The dim reflection of His name is the drop
of water that creates the pearl of liberation.(1)

nandotsavädayas täù kaàsa-vadhäntä harer mahä-léläù


chandobhir lalitäìgair añöädaçabhir nirüpyante

O great forest-fire that burns the grass of the demons, O regal elephant that
plays in the flower-garden forest by the shore of the Yamunä, O moon that
opens the lotus flowers of the eyes of the gopés intoxicated with love, I pray
that Your pastimes may decorate my words.(3)

O Lord, I pray that the nectar river of words about You, which by
destroying the thirst for anything other than Kåñëa uproots the tree of repeated
birth and death, which is continually sipped by the cakraväka birds of the great
sages, which makes a sweet sound delighting the ears, and which is filled with
swiftly moving currents of nectar exchanges of transcendental love, may flow
into the courtyard of my tongue.(4)

O fickle mind, please worship the prince of Vraja,


who with His own splendid glory beautified the transcendental abode of
Vraja,
who with the sweetness of the moon of His face delighted the eyes of His
parents,
whose name-giving ceremony was performed by many expert in
the Vedas,
whose monsoon cloud transcendental form pleased the birds of His
relatives,
whose father performed a great festival of many different kinds of charity,
who received gifts from all the cowherd people,

whose birth-celebration was observed by many nicely decorated men and
women,
whose birth-celebration was a time when the people became pleased by
throwing milk, yogurt, and turmeric mixed with water,
whose birth-celebration was a time when the splendid courtyard became
muddied with a great abundance of yogurt,
whose birth-celebration was a time when the women openly danced with
great happiness,
whose birth-celebration was a time when His father pleased all the splendid
cowherd people,
whose birth-celebration was a time when the great opulence of the goddess
of fortune fully blossomed in the land of Vraja,
who was seen by the hard eyes of the expertly deceptive Pütanä,
who has taken a vow to kill all demons who frighten the people of Vraja,
who slept near the dangerously poisonous breasts of Baka’s younger sister
Pütanä,
who sucked out Pütanä’s life along with her breast milk,
who made Pütanä’s gigantic body fall upon a grove of trees,
who cut off the many future births of the Pütanä, the enemy of
children,
who was carefully protected by the expert ,
whose splendid, auspiciously marked transcendental limbs were lovingly
anointed with cow dung and dust raised by the cows,
and who is the fresh sandal paste that anoints all the hearts.

O Nanda-nandana, all glories to the very sweet devotional service honey


that flows from the lotus flower of Your feet. When the smallest drop of that
sweetness is present, the happiness of impersonal liberation becomes like an

oyster.

O Lord whose activities were described by the nearby children,
O Lord who was approached by Your anxious parents,
O Lord for whose sake the brähmaëas expertly chanted mantras to
counteract the evil influence,
O Lord who became so heavy Your mother could no longer carry You,
O Lord whom the demons wish to kill,
O Lord who was carried away in a moment by a demon,
O Lord who killed the demon by holding onto his neck,
O Lord for whose sake Your anxious mother cried aloud,
O Lord who was discovered by the crying gopés,

O Lord who decorated the home of Nanda Mahäräja with Your pastimes of

O Lord who delighted the hearts of Gokula with Your sweetness,
O Lord who was dragged about by a restless calf whose tail You had grasped,
O Lord whose pastimes delighted the gopés housewives and made them
forget all about their household duties,
O Lord who became curious and released the calves at the wrong time,
O Lord who, frightened because of Your stealing activities, restlessly glances
here and there,
O Lord who laughed when the elderly gopés rebuked You,
O Lord whose face expertly conceals Your guilt as a thief,
O Lord who climbed up on the wooden mortar,
O Lord who poked holes in the jars suspended from ropes,
O Lord who delighted the monkeys by giving the milk-products to them,
O Lord who broke the clay pots full of fresh yogurt,
O Lord into whose frightened eyes Your mother gazed,
O sun who makes the lotus flower of Gokula bloom, all glories to You!

transcendental form shielded by the darkness, may protect you all.

At every moment may we place our love in the youthful transcendental


person who decorates the great forest, who breaks the sinful, who is lovingly
praised by the people of Vraja, who destroys the prosperity of the demons, who
pleases the earth, who has handsome hair, and who brings transcendental bliss
to the eyes of the gopés.

who is the moon of Vraja, who delights the hearts of Upananda,
who is pleased by the very beautiful forest of Våndävana,
whom His mother took from beneath the cart and placed in her lap,
whose joyful singing was followed by the doe-eyed gopés,
who was delighted by the great forest of Våndävana filled with blossoming
flowers,
who stays on the shore of the Yamunä,
who finds great bliss on the king of hills, Govardhana,
who is a great treasury of the precious jewels of transcendental pastimes He
enjoys with His friends on Govardhana,
who longs to tend the calves near Govardhana,
who there happily and intently plays with His friends for a long time,
whose eyes follow the large ball moving up and down as if tossed by waves,
who creates many beautiful new melodies on the flute,
whose soft neck is splendidly graced with two tiger’s nails
whose waist is adorned with a string of wonderful small tinkling bells,
who wears a peacock feather in His handsome hair,
who wears a charming necklace,
who with His friends pretends to have become a bull,
who is the lion that destroyed the very cruel elephant of the calf-demon
Vatsäsura,
who playfully entered the beak of the great Bakäsura demon,
who became like a thunderbolt that split the mountain peak of Bakäsura,
who was embraced by the arms of His happy friends,

who carefully protects His calves,
who is decorated with many blossoming flowers,

O Lord who saw the boy protectors of the calves become struck with wonder
by seeing a demon in the form of a serpent whose body was like a great cloud,
who gave off a putrid odor, whose eyes were like a forest-fires, whose mouth
was like a great darkness, and whose body obstructed the path through the
forest,
O Lord who saw them enter its belly,
O Lord who, thinking that a great calamity might befall Your devotees,
immediately entered the creature and by expanding Your body choked the
snake demon to death,
O Lord who with a single glance restored the boys and calves to life,
O Lord who, eager to take lunch, went with them to the bank of a clear
stream,
O Lord who appeared like a splendid baby elephant in the midst of a great
multitude of boys seated together to take lunch,
O Lord who was face to face with all Your friends,
O Lord who smiled gently,
O Lord who eats the offerings presented in Vedic sacrifices,
O Lord expert at taking lunch with the cowherd boys,
O Lord whose transcendental pastimes were carefully observed by Indra and
all the demigods,
O Lord who, as the boy protectors of the calves were eating, went to the
forest to find the many calves that had already wandered far away,
O Lord who, clearly understanding that the calves and boys had been stolen
by the eager demigod Brahmä, smiled,
O Lord as splendid as the moon,
O Lord who immendiately expanded into forms like those of the stolen boys
and calves,

poisonous snake, dove into the water, making a great splash in the water
burning with poison.
O Lord who made a great tidal wave running for 400 cubits,
O goal of the devotees,
O Lord who violently splashed the water with Your powerful arms,
O Lord who made a great sound,
O Lord who were at once surrounded by the fearful and cruel eyes on the
red-jeweled hoods of the angry Käliya serpent, who was ready to set the world
on fire,
O Lord who enjoys the pastimes of a child,
O Lord who smiled when You became trapped in the serpent’s coils,

O Lord whose smiling face was gazed upon by the cowherd men, their wives,
children, and elders, who suffered such sharp pain when they saw the
wonderful serpent that their garments were beginning to slip from their bodies,
who were loudly crying in anguish, who wanted to also dive into the lake but
were stopped by the words of Balaräma, and who became stunned and
motionless,
O Lord who expanded within the grip of the serpent’s coils,
O Lord who removed the anguish of Your friends,
O Lord became like Garuòa,
O Lord who displayed terrible power,
O Lord who broke free of the serpent’s grip, happily jumped on its
red-jeweled heads, and enjoyed there a great festival of transcendental dancing,
O wonderful boy whose locks of hair moved as Yur gracefully danced,
O Lord glorified by Brahmä, Çiva, and all the demigods in the sky who,
happy to see the demon crushed, showered You with flowers and glorified you
with many prayers,
O Lord who was gazed at by Yäçoda, who became very happy to hear the
women joyfully say, “O friend, take a good look now at your son, who has all
the restlessness of childhood, who glances from the corners of His moving eyes,
who is so handsome that he enchants and eclipeses the god of love, who is now
breaking the great pride of this serpent, whose transcendental hand is now
raised in the air, who playfully moves His head from side to side, whose
budding smile is now beginning to blossom, whose necklace moves to and fro,
and who, out of love for you, is now dancing before you, O Queen of
Våndävana,”
O Lord who ferociously crushed the demon,
O Lord who with transcendental handsomeness are the crown of the god of
love,
O Lord who again and again jumped from one serpent’s hood to another,

anointed with transcendental love and also filled many many jeweled vessels
with milk and many other containers with wheat cakes, and at once went to the
edge of the forest where they respectfully approached You and spoke to You
