PAKISTAN SOCIETY FOR THE REHABILIATION OF THE DISABLED -

PSRD

About PSRD The Pakistan Society for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled is a non-
profit, charitable organization established in 1957 in Lahore, Pakistan. It is supported by
donations from philanthropic individuals and organizations.  (PSRD) was laid in 1957
with a small Physiotherapy Centre in the Out Patient Department (OPD) of Mayo
Hospital Lahore. Dr. Amir ud Din was the first President and Dr. Ayub Ahmad Khan
was General Secretary, Begum Khudeja G.A Khan was the President of PSRD from 1960
to 1988 while Dr. Amir ud Din was its patron.  In 1963 the PSRD with the help of two
research projects approved by the Govt. of Pakistan and funded by USA Govt. under the
PL-480 Programme enabled the Society to set up a multipurpose a Physiotherapy
Department and a workshop for fabrication of Prosthetics and Orthotics.

PSRD History The Pakistan Society for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled (P.S.R.D.) is
a charitable voluntary organization dedicated to the service of the orthopaedically
handicapped. The foundation was laid in 1957 with the financial assistance of Rs.
100,000/- from the then West Pakistan Social Welfare Council. It was a humble
beginning with just a small Physiotherapy Centre in the Out-Patients Department of
the Mayo Hospital, Lahore. Dr. Amiruddin FRCS, FICS was the first President and Dr.
Ayub Ahmad Khan M.S   M.R.C.S Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery of K.E.M.C and
visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon of the Mayo Hospital, Lahore was its first General
Secretary.  Rehabilitation is a complicated and continuous process and requires the
service of trained personnel, dedicated social workers and funds.  The launching of such
a multipurpose scheme was made possible when in 1964 the Society’s application for
financial grant under PL-480 for its two Research Demonstration project was
recommended by the Pakistan Government and accepted by the Department of Health
Education and Welfare, Vocational Rehabilitation Administration Washington –
Government of the United States of America. The premises at 111-Ferozepur Road were
purchased and the Society moved in there. The money for the building was raised from
loans which have since been repaid.  In 1969, a new block of building, the first of a
series, was completed to house the Orthopaedic Centre for the fabrication and fitting of
artificial limbs and braces. This Section till then was functioning in a rented building
away form the Centre.
PSRD– FOCUS AREAS PSRD Orthopedic Hospital

Introduction  PSRD Hospital, originally established for the treatment of patients with


deformities, is now one of the largest orthopedic hospitals in Pakistan with a capacity of
100 beds where orthopedic operations including total joint replacement, fracture, non-
unions, mal-union and various types of congenital deformities are taking place.

Surgical Outdoor  Surgical outdoor is managed daily by one of our three consultants
with the help of medical officers.  On average 130 patients are examined daily and
patients requiring surgery are admitted. During the year the Surgical Outdoor attended
to 21,735 patients. This department works six days a week.

PSRD High School The academic session of the school is from August to June. During
the year total number of students was 220. This year eight students appeared for the
Matriculation examination and the result was 98.95 percent.   Workshops   School
teachers attended different workshops including Management of Children with Cerebral
Palsy at National Institute of Special Education (NISE), Islamabad, written and spoken
English, juvenile delinquency at District Prison Training Camp, and hearing links
training program at Hamza Foundation. A German occupational therapist Mr. Rafik
Nathani conducted a workshop for teachers.

Community Based Outreach Unit The CBR program of PSRD aims at prevention of


diseases and disabilities in the rural population through immunization programs and
primary health care education. Self employment is another objective to empower
women with disabilities, and enhance their potential through small loans and skills
training.  The CBR staff conducted a door-to-door survey in village Tajpura and
recorded 1,449 families consisting of 10,087 persons. Women and children with
disabilities were 80 and 7 respectively.  214 children under 2 years were checked and 24
of them were referred to EPI for immunization. Other than these, 62 patients were
referred to PSRD hospital and 273 to other hospitals.
Vocational Rehabilitation Unit The Vocational Rehabilitation Centre of PSRD
provides self employment opportunities to destitute and disadvantaged disabled men
and women through the provision of micro credit.  During 2006-2007, PSRD helped 33
deserving disabled persons to stand on their own feet by sanctioning an amount of Rs.
734,000 at a nominal service charge of 2.5 percent. This includes Rs. 320,000 provided
by M/S-ORIX Leasing Co. The recovery for the year under review was at a very
encouraging rate of 98.5 percent.

Skill Development Units The computer training centre offers training to disabled


students; and at a nominal fee to the able bodied. The section was provided with only
one computer initially, which has been increased to twelve with donors assistance
internet facility and the latest computer courses to around 450 students and assisted in
locating jobs.

Speech Therapy Unit PSRD High School has 20% children with speech disorders.


Considering this fact and for the cause of rehabilitation, a Speech Therapy Unit with
latest equipment has started in the premises of High School with well qualified staff.
Besides the school students outdoor patients are being benefited from this facility.

International Community Centers  Affiliations American Friends of
PSRDAmerican Friends of Pakistan Society for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled was
established in U.S.A. in 1991 with the objective of soliciting of support for the PSRD in
the USA by collecting donations. These donations go a long way to help the PSRD in the
maintenance and expansion of its multi-disciplinary rehabilitation services. The
AFPSRD has working relationship with the World Rehabilitation Fund, Inc. in New
York. The accounts of funds/donations collected for PSRD are properly maintained by
them.

WORLD REHABILITATION FUND (WRF)   The World Rehabilitation Fund is a


world wide, non-profit organization of physicians, therapists, technicians and specialists
who are dedicated to relieving the misery caused by war, natural disaster and disease. 
Over 4 million people in over 150 countries around the world have benefited from the
Fund.

REHABILITATION INTERNATIONAL  Rehabilitation International is a global


network of people with disabilities, service provides, government agencies and
advocates working to promote and implement the Rights and Inclusion of people with a
disability, Founded in 1922. PSRD is a National Member Organization (NMO).Mrs.
Parveen Umar, General Secretary attended 20th Rehabilitation Internation World
Congress – Oslo, Norway – (21st –24th June 2004) Mrs. Rehana Maroof Baray,
Secretary attended Governing Assembly and Seminar in New York, USA (19th - 22nd
August 2006).
