Year 7 Summer Examination Online 2020 – Latin Revision Guide

What do I need to know?

· Year 7 Summer Examinations Vocabulary Checklist (this will be given to you by your
teacher)

Make sure you know all the words of the vocabulary list. Any words not on the list will be
given to you.

· Present Tense
· Imperfect Tense (how to recognise it and how to translate it)
· Perfect Tense (how to recognise it and how to translate it)

Present tense verb endings – who is doing the verb i.e. amo – I love, amas – you love. You
have this written into your yellow grammar book and it is also in the back of the red textbook
on page 182.

Imperfect tense verb endings – who is doing the verb and when the verb is happening i.e.
portabam – I was carrying, portabas – you were carrying. You have this written into your
yellow grammar book and it is also in the back of the red textbook on page 182.

Perfect tense verb endings – who is doing the verb and when the verb is happening i.e. amavi
– I loved, amavisti – You loved. You have this written into your yellow grammar book and it is
also in the back of the red textbook on page 182.

This will be tested in the form of the translation. Marks will be allocated for accurate
translation of verbs.

· How to use a noun ending table to work out subject and object, singular and plural. You
will be given a noun ending table to use in the exam.

Subject (Nominative) – you need to be able to recognise which noun is doing the action of the
verb. This noun will be in the Nominative case and generally first word.
Object (Accusative) - you need to be able to recognise which noun is having the action of the
verb done to them. This noun will be in the Accusative case and generally second word.
Singular – You need to be able to recognise whether you have a singular (only one) noun or
several.
Plural – You need to be able to recognise whether you have a plural (more than one) noun.

o Roman food, including dinner parties – meals, type of food, entertainment,


decoration p23-25

o Roman Houses - the rooms, the garden and the decoration p.8-13
o Roman Theatre – the theatre building, masks and costumes, types of shows p64-67

Don’t forget to look at the pictures. You will be given a picture stimulus and asked to explain what it
shows or a question related to it.

What will I be asked to do?

The examination will consist of two parts: Section A - Language and Section B – Background.

Section A will consist of a short passage to translate from Latin to English. You can use your notes.

Section B will consist of a short essay (200 words maximum) on the background topics and you will
be expected to answer in English.

Some tips …

Learn your vocabulary thoroughly: use flash cards, sticky notes etc.

Log on to the e-learning resource from any school computer – listen to grammatical explanations,
watch background videos, practise comprehensions
