BFC 13903: CIVIL ENGINEERING MATHEMATICS 1


PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS

General:
1. This project is to be carried out in a group of maximum FOUR (4) students.
2. This project will contribute 10% to the total mark.
3. Presentation will be held on week 14 (subject to change: refer to the lecturer of each section) and
final report must be submitted on week 13 (15th December 2017 before 3.00 pm – subject to
change: refer to the lecturer of each section).

Tasks:
1. Carry out a project based on the application of differentiation (rate of change) in civil engineering
field. Solve both problems (Problem 1 and Problem 2).
2. Problem 1: These days, the price of construction materials keep increasing following the
increment of current living cost. Your group will need to analyze the rate of change of the
construction materials price for 3 months back. Do a monthly analysis of the price. Group 1-5 will
analyze the price of cement while group 6-10 and 11-15 will analyze the price of sand and steel
respectively. Conduct a survey at any supplier or company and record any meeting together with
photo as a proof to be included in the report.
3. Problem 2: The fuel price in Malaysia is set to be revised weekly. Conduct a weekly analysis for
the rate of change of the fuel price in Malaysia according to the assigned group as below:

4. Prepare an organize report which include the followings:


- Report cover should include: Group number, group member (with matric no.), section, course
name and code, lecturer’s name, session, semester & UTHM Logo
- Table of content
- Introduction / Background
- Problem
- Solution
- Conclusion
- References
- Appendixes (Pictures/Minutes of Meeting/Proof of Discussion/Raw Data)
- Project rubric

Assessment:
The assessment of this project will be based on three main elements: cognitive, psychomotor and affective
(please refer to project rubric).

Warning:
1. If the project is submitted late without sufficient cause, a penalty shall be applied. A deduction
of 50% of the maximum mark available from the actual mark achieved by the group shall be
imposed upon expiry of the deadline. A further deduction of 5% of the maximum mark available
from the actual achieved by the group shall then be imposed of the next subsequence days.
2. Plagiarism and academic dishonesty can have some severe penalties and repercussions. Any
blatant copying, evidence of electronic files shared, or exact same report/problem/solution will
result in a grade of ZERO for all parties involved.
