Quality of Education

It is one of the top ranked private universities according to QS Asia 2020 & 2019 ranking. It
follows very smart & strict rule for keeping its quality education. United International University
is a place where the students are given the teaching to face the actual real life situations. The
students here are not being confined in books rather being taught how to face the real life problems.

We conducted a survey from the students which shows that most of the students are satisfied with
the quality of the education. Hence quality of education is quite standard.

4|Page
Faculty Members

It has 320 full-time faculty and 100 adjunct faculty. All faculty members are really awesome and
well educated. They have completed their undergraduates and graduates from some reputed and
top ranked universities of Bangladesh and also from the other countries as well. Some of them
are Ph.D. holders and very experienced in the professional life. The survey says that most of the
teachers are very helpful and friendly. About 75% students are satisfied with the faculty
member’s cooperation.

Grading System

The performance of a student in a given course is made through continuous evaluation that
comprises quizzes/ in-course tests, class participation, attendance, home work/assignment, case
study, mid-terms and trimester final examinations. Letter grades and grade points are used to
evaluate the performance of a student in a given course. The table below shows the grading
policy.

5|Page
Letter Grade Grade Point Assessment
A 4.00 Outstanding
A- 3.67 Excellent
B+ 3.33 Very Good
B 3.00 Good

B- 2.67 Above Average

C+ 2.33 Average
C 2.00 Below Average
C- 1.67 Poor
D+ 1.33 Very poor
D 1.00 Pass
F 0.00 Fail

The course in which a student has obtained “D” or higher grade will be counted as earned credit
hours. Any course in which a student has obtained “F” grade will not be counted towards his/her
earned credit. In that case he/she will have to retake the course.

Incomplete (I) grade may be assigned in special circumstances at the discretion of course
teacher. The student has to take the initiative to remove the “I” grade within 15 days of the
following trimester. If action is not taken, the “I” grade will revert to “F”.

Students may select to retake a course if he or she thinks grade improvement is possible. Students
who wish to retake a course must register for the course again and will have to pay tuition and
other applicable fees. Degree requirements for both Undergraduate and Graduate Programs: CGPA
2.00.

It follows a standard policy for grading, which is an international policy. It is quite flexible than
some other universities.

Extracurricular activities

We’re pleased to see great positive responses from our survey on this very particular topic ‘The
extracurricular activities.’ UIU is also known as ‘The Green Campus’ surrounded by nature! It
got a huge field for all kinds of outdoor games, such as- football, badminton, cricket and what not.
UIU provides round – the-year indoor and outdoor recreational facilities. UIU indoor sports room
is located at the main campus, where you can find huge tables for playing table tennis and also
playing carom arrangement. UIU clubs organize indoor and outdoor games, debates, seminars,
workshops, cultural programs, educational tours and also participate in different inter university
tournaments. UIU students also participate in voluntary blood donation program, community and
humanitarian services program. Some of the clubs publish newsletters, magazines etc. All these
things are necessary for building up a good career. Students get familiar with skills of leadership
which enhance their CV or portfolio while applying for various jobs. UIU always promote co-
curricular and extracurricular activities.

The Directorate of Student Affairs plays the vital role in the development and growth of students
in these students’ activities, which are mainly organized through a number of student clubs. The
club activities are coordinated by the Students Directorate, headed by the Director of Student
Affairs, and assisted by the coordinator of Student Affairs. The Directorate provides all sorts of
support services to the student clubs.
Furthermore, UIU believes that Globalization in the present world has created abundant
opportunity and at the same time huge competition. So, it is very vital to acknowledge in the

7|Page
competition to grab opportunity the class room based education is not enough. Therefore, it is
necessary to open more learning process to develop students’ mentally capable of dealing any
given situations, intellectual ability and inner qualities.
A student can achieve side by side with his academic curriculum participates in co-curricular
activities i.e. debate, seminar, symposium, workshop, cultural program, community services
program and games and sports of his own choice and likings.

These student activities are promoted through a number of student clubs. The clubs are UIU Debate
Club (UIUDC), UIU Cultural Club (UIUCC), UIU Theater & Film Club (UIUT&FC), UIU
Business Club (UIUBC), UIU Computer Club (UIUCCL), UIU Electrical & Electronic Club
(UIUEEC), UIU Photography Club (UIUPC), UIU Social Services Club (UIUSSC), UIU Sports
Club (UIUSC), UIU MBA Club (UIUMC).
The clubs are having student committees administered by the Moderator (Faculty Member). The
club activities are coordinated by the Directorate of Student Affairs (DSA) headed by the Director
of Student Affairs assisted by the Executive & Asst. Director of DSA. The Directorate provides
all sorts of support services to the student clubs. The clubs are engaged in continuous innovation
and intellectual creativity.

Facilities
Canteen

8|Page
According to this report, UIU students are considered as a customer when they buy food from
University Canteen. The canteen has three different organization’s ownership. When the survey
was done at that time a huge gap was followed between the student expectations and their
perceived service. Overall they are not happy of buying services. The students here are
dissatisfied because the Cafeteria or the university is not paying attention to feedback. In order
to make improvements, feedback is necessary.

The quality of the canteen is degrading day by day so much that everyone has a concern about
it. The improvements are needed in basic, sanitation, hygiene, cost, quality of food and
customer’s service are the utmost matters that concern everyone which are in displeasing
conditions.

The canteen is not only limited to students, staffs and faculties but also to each and every one
outside of university including guardians. Therefore, viewing all these aspects the canteen
quality must be raised to standards. And thus, improvement work must be taken immediately
into account.

Study Room

Another biggest issue in the university is the over-crowded study room. According to the
students, the study room implemented in the university for students are unaccommodating. In
general, the room sizes would be capped for 20-25 students. Unfortunately, in UIU the study
rooms regularly exceed up 30-40 students. Most students perform better in calm and quiet
environments. The more the student increases, this becomes increasingly difficult to do so.
Insignificantly, over-crowding increases discipline issues. Large study rooms packed with
students provide more opportunities for personality conflicts, tensions, and general disruptive
behavior.

9|Page
Average and below average students will struggle to advance in an overcrowded classroom.
These students need more, one-on-one instructional time and minimal distractions to maximize
their learning potential. Unremarkably, the chance of successfully improving proficiency on a
standardized test decreases as the number of students increase. This is an expected result
when you increase the number of students in the study room. Louder study rooms translate to
distractions making it more difficult for students to learn. Not to mention, more students
translate more stress.

Adding more study to rooms to each of the floors could be beneficial for most students in the
University

Common Room

UIU consists about 10000 sq. ft. floor space and the campus has 12 floors with 2 basements.
Most of the rooms are treated for classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories. Although it is
important for those physical learning environments to be well maintained. UIU makes sure that
classrooms are taken proper care of. For example, the room temperature, the board of the
classroom along with the chairs and table are well ordered and clean.

However, UIU mishap to provide equal rooms for both female and male students. A common
room and gym for is mandatory for both male and female students. A common room could
come to an advantage for most students, for prayer purposes, relaxing and building a social
10 | P a g e
circle. One has been provided for female students but over-sighted for the male students. As
for, gym it is important for all students to be healthy both physically and mentally alongside
with a trainer who has a positive mind set. To guide all students towards their goals. Although a
gym room is given for the male students. But the female students are retained.

Transportation Service

United International University makes sure to provide all kinds of facilities that can be provided
to their students. Like providing transportation service is one of them. University started providing
the transportation service after they shifted from their Dhanmondi campus to their permanent
campus at Vatara, 100 feet. The university provides shuttle service as well that is for free for
university students. The shuttles run from the campus to Notun Bazar.
They provide two route bus service, named route 1 and route 2. They start at the same points and
picks students from these two routes. These two routes are seen to cover most of the parts of the
city where tends to be more students of this university. The cost of university transport is Tk. 4000
each trimester and it has been found that the amount is fair considering all the costs related to this.
Around 400-500 students register for the service each trimester. University transportations are safe
than other public transports. Safe in this way that the drivers are known, also the drivers tend to
drive safely as well.
University claims to say that enough sits are provided to manage all the students registered for the
bus service. It saves personal cost of travelling as well. When asked students said that they get to
travel from university to home and vice versa with their friends, so they are happy with that fact
as well. In order to find out whether the students are satisfied with the service or not a questionnaire
survey was done in which university students were asked questions in relation to the bus service
they use. The questions involve whether enough buses are provided and whether they have
appropriate number of stops and pickups or not. And questions were asked whether they should
increase the number of buses and shuttle services or not. And the results were 83.8% strongly
agreed that yes the number of buses and shuttle services should be increased while 13.5% agreed
to the fact. This however can tell us that the students are not very much satisfied with this particular
facility. The students said that the quality of the bus service should be improved. And more routes
should be introduced for the service as the present bus routes are seen not to cover all other
important parts as well.

11 | P a g e
The most major problem students said was that the bus service doesn’t have flexible timing. That
is the bus starts at 7.00 am only and one batch leaves at 2.00 pm and the other at 5.00 pm. So it
can be seen that there is a huge gap between the timings. So, students have to wait for long time
after their classes end. So they want more buses to be given adjusting the class times. In case of
the shuttle services students have seen giving complaints about recently. They have to wait for
hours for the shuttle service. The shuttles leave within one hour gap. But the numbers of students
availing the service is huge. Sometimes they even have to wait for two hours as when one bus is
full and they have to wait for the next one.
Thus these factors should be taken into account.

12 | P a g e
Safety on campus

University claims that their campus is maintained with high safety regulatory. The number of
security guards is enough also the whole campus as well as the area around the campus is highly
secured with CC TV cameras. There are particular rules to maintain the rules and regulations of
the university which are tend to be followed by the students as well as the authorities and faculty
members.
The purpose of a health and safety inspection is to find out whether the arrangements which the
local health and safety policy requires to be in place are actually in place and whether staff and
students in the university or Support Service are doing what the policy requires of them. The
university has their own measures to deal with the unfair means. Like these are the things
university deals with.

Social Misconduct:

1. Abusive or disorderly conduct.

2. Sexual harassment and obscenity in any form.
3. Physical assault in any form.
4. Direct or indirect threat or coercion.
5. Verbal, nonverbal, mental, and/or physical harassment.
6. Participation in any activity that may disrupt any function of the University.
7. Uploading of indecent pictures or making indecent and untruthful comments via any
website like Facebook, twitter, messenger, email etc.
8. Association with any social, political, religious, or any other organization connected with
activities endangering/ likely to endanger the security of life & property of the citizens or
of the state is strictly prohibited.

Dangers to Health and Safety:

1. Smoking inside the campus.

2. Possession or use of alcoholic drinks, narcotic drugs etc.
3. Possession of weapons and firearms.

Disobedience to Lawful Authority:

1. Disobedience, interference, resistance or failure to comply with the direction of

University personnel on duty.
2. Unauthorized entry.

13 | P a g e
Theft:

1. Involvement in any kind of theft or misappropriation.

2. Unlawful Possession of University belongings.
3. Damaging and stealing library books, laboratory equipment’s or any other property.

A survey was done questioning the students whether the campus is safe or not. And the answers
were that 54.1% said that it is safe where 37.8% said the campus is extremely safe. While 8.1%
had issues with the campus security. When we asked those 8.1% of the population what is wrong
with the safety they said that outsides have easy access to the campus as they have seen with their
own experience. The ID’s are not always checked so that means outside students can easily enter
the campus and they were3 not okay with this fact.
Another safety issue arises with the architectural facts of the campus. There were incidents where
the glass doors and windows were shattered and blown away by the wind. This is quite dangerous
as students can get hurt if it falls on them.

14 | P a g e
Satisfaction

We conducted a survey which will be showed in the appendix. From our survey we found a lot of
information about UIU, some of them is good and some of them are bad. There are some
improvements that the university can do with a simple change. All students said their new campus
has a lot of green environment around the campus. Some students think there should have been
more departments they could have studied. We know that UIU is soon starting 3 more programs
Civil Engineering (CE), English, Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE) in their department
but from student’s perspective it should have been there some years ago.

From survey we found that some faculties are too hard on some students, which is not a good thing
for the students. Students demands more shuttle and bus service with more time span. And almost
90% said they need more study space and more seating arrangement outside class. Food quality is
not healthy according to more than 60% of the students. More than 70% students think the campus
is very safe. Overall from our survey we can say UIU students are somewhat satisfied. But every
one of them can be solved easily.

15 | P a g e
Conclusion

UIU is firmly concerned in maintaining a congenial and harassment-free environment in the campus. Such
an endeavor requires avoidance of indecent activities on the part of the both male and female students.
UIU makes sure that all the students adapt the Bangladeshi culture. UIU authority has formed a proctorial
committee to monitor the activities of the students to which any violation in the rules of the University
will be reported and dealt with.

UIU’s main mission is to “Quest for Excellence”, UIU has marched a long way forward in this short span
of time and singled out itself as one of the emerging quality private universities in Bangladesh. This hard
earned recognition is the result of inexplicable efforts made by the students, teachers and management
of UIU coupled with an unprecedented patronage from the United Group. Their mission is known to
demand of not just to remain as another participant in the sea of private initiatives for higher education
in Bangladesh but also to be a major player in the development and dissemination of knowledge, research
and technology in Bangladesh. With this affirmed goal, United International University is said to pursue a
never ending quest for excellence to see itself as the center of excellence in teaching and research in the
South Asian region.
