Title : What causes a C1 error code on the DR 6080/7580/9080C?

Error :
What causes a C1 error code on the DR 6080/7580/9080C?

Workaround :

The upper unit door sensor PS5 detects if the upper unit is open or not. It is located on the lower left
part of the upper delivery assembly. There is a black sensor actuator arm that hangs down below the
level of the upper delivery assembly.

The actuator arm should be visible as in the image above. If the black arm is missing check the upper
unit door sensor PS5. To check the sensor, remove the lower metal cover in the image above. The
instructions to remove the cover are listed below.
PS5 is attached to a small PCB called the L-sensor PCB assembly, part # MG1-3581-000.

If the sensor arm is not broken off then check the sensor PCB mounting bracket. This mounting bracket
can get bent and then the C01 error will appear.

The mounting bracket should be at a 90-degree angle from the side of the scanner.

If the mounting bracket looks normal check the sensor using the DR 6080/9080C scanner service tool.
It is called the Quma Tool. It is on the DR 6080/7580/9080C driver disc that comes with the machine.
The tool can be found under the Driver/Tools folder. It can also be downloaded from this article.

To check the PS5 using the QumaTool start the program and enter the password of quma. The tool
can be run from the CD and does not need to be installed on a PC to work. With the scanner in the
closed position or in the ready to scan position the screen of the QumaTool should look like the image
below.

This is a partial image of the tool showing sensor PS5, which is # 3 in the image above as being lit
or activated.

If the sensor is not activated open the upper unit of the scanner to access the PS5 sensor flag and
depress it manually. If the sensor does not change states manually, replace it. If it can be activated
manually close the upper unit and press on the upper cover and see if the sensor gets activated. If it
does not activate when the upper unit is closed, press on the upper unit and see if with some additional
pressure the sensor will become activated. If it becomes activated with some additional pressure the
upper cover latch post position needs to be adjusted. Removing the left cover to adjust the upper unit
closing position. See the image below.

Loosen the two screws on the latch post and move the post in the downward direction.

Title : How does the verify count feature work on the DR 6080/7580/9080C scanners?

Question :
How does the verify count feature work on the DR 6080/7580/9080C scanners?

Answer :

Using Capture Perfect 2.0 the procedure would be as follows:

From the SCANNER SETTINGS dialog box set up the scanner how the customer wants to scan,
example: 300DPI, duplex and auto page size detection.

Now select the MORE button and select the verify count check box.
Select the OK key to save the settings. Select the OK key again to exit out of the SCANNER
SETTINGS dialog box.

Now set the scanner to count only mode and clear the counter. To clear the counter press and hold the
clear/stop key for 5 seconds. Now set the documents that need to be scanned using the verify count
option in the feeder and press the start key. The scanner will count the documents.

Next turn off the count only mode and set the same documents to be scanned into the feeder again.
Select scan batch to file, type in a file name and select save. The start scanning box will come up.
Select start scanning and the number indicator on the scanner will blink off and on and start to
decrement. When all of the pages have been scanned the number will reach Zero and then go back to
the original count value. If the unit scans all of the pages correctly the continue scanning box will
appear. The same number of pages can be added to the scanner over and over. If the number of
pages changes then the process needs to be repeated.

If an error is detected in the number of pages scanned the error below will be displayed. This error
indicates a number smaller than the number of pages counted.

Question :
How are sensors 7, 8 and 9 tested using the QUMA tool on a DR 6080/9080C scanner?

Answer :

There are three sensors PS7, PS8 and PS9 that use reflective light guides in the lower entrance guide
to work. The service tool (QUMA) is used to test or check the operation of these sensors. The service
tool is located in the Tools folder, a sub-folder of the Driver folder on the DR 6080/9080C Setup CD. It
can also be downloaded from this article. The problem is the sensor needs light to work. To test the
sensors, open up the QUMA service tool, with the password quma, and then select [Dcon Check].
After selecting the [Dcon Check] button a new screen will appear. The screen below is with no paper in
the document feed tray and the upper assembly opened.

To check sensor PS7, PS8, and PS9 a light must be shined into the sensors. Below is an image
showing the sensors. Each sensor consists of a light emitting and light-receiving device. These sensors
use the light guides in the lower entrance guide plate to work.
Below is an image of the service tool with a flashlight illuminating the center sensor PS8. It shows the
sensor is now off.

If the sensors do not change with light replace them. PS7 and PS9 are both on the front registration
sensor PCB, MG1-3491-000. PS9 is on the back registration sensor PCB, MG1-3443-000.

Error :
The DR 6080 or DR 9080 is giving H01 errors after installing the imprinter option.

Workaround :

The error is caused because the ink cartridge is not making good contact with the connectors. If it does not make
contact the error H01 will be displayed.

The spring attached to the green lever applies pressure to the ink cartridge. To improve the contact remove the
imprinter assembly and then remove the spring. It has been found that the black plastic housing where the green
holder makes contact is not allowing the green holder to go in far enough.

The black plastic housing where the green cartridge holder touches, needs to be filed down just a little bit. First
start by marking the black plastic where the green part touches. See the image above for the contact point.
Only a small amount needs to be trimmed down. To check install the ink cartridge to see if more adjustment is
necessary. Reinstall the imprinter unit and test. If the H01 error is still present check if the ink head is seated
correctly and try cleaning the contacts. Next check if there seems to be enough pressure. If the pressure is good
then try replacing the ink cartridge.

Title : The DR 6080/7580/9080C will not auto feed documents.

Problem :
The DR 6080/7580/9080C will not auto feed documents.

Solution :
Automatic feeding is a feature in ISIS/Twain driver settings. It is enabled so paper can just be placed in
the document feed tray and be added to the existing scan job. The first batch of documents needs to be
fed by selecting Scan Batch to File. Once this scan job is started additional pages can be added to the
same file simply by placing paper onto the document feeder.

When the scanner will not auto feed documents using this feature check the paper detect sensor using
the Quma tool. The paper detect sensor in the document lift tray is sensor number two in the Quma tool.
The number two indicator should light up when a document is placed on the doc feed tray. The image
below is of a machine in normal operating condition ready to scan, with a document in the tray. The
number two indicator is lit. The service tool is located in the Tools folder, a sub-folder of the Driver folder
on the DR 6080/7580/9080C Setup CD. It can also be downloaded from this article. The password for
the service tool is quma.

If it does not change states, try cleaning the plastic cover in the doc tray assembly. If cleaning does not
resolve the problem, check the lower cable assembly next. There is a possibility of a broken wire in the
cable assembly on the lower part of the doc lift tray. Ohm out the cable between the base of the doc lift
tray and the 10 Sub PCB. If it is bad replace it. The part number for the lower cable assembly is MG1-
3453-030. If the cable checks out OK replace the document detect PCB in the document lift tray. It is
called the camera detect PCB in the parts book, MG1-3269-000.

Title : 'Out of Memory' Message

Question :
What can cause an 'Out of Memory" error message?

Answer :
Within some scanning applications an 'Out of Memory' or 'Not Enough Memory' scanner error message
may appear instead of the "REPLACE ROLLERS" message. This message is triggered by the scanner
internal counter recognizing that 250,000 scans have occurred and the pickup, feed, and retard rollers
should be replaced.

Replace the rollers if needed, then reset the counter via the PC within the Properties of the scanner,
under the Counter tab. (Counter reset information is located in the User Instructions).

Title : Images are shifting to the right during scanning.

Problem :
Images are shifting to the right during scanning.

Solution :
The problem was found to be broken wires on the wire harness below the document lift tray. The unit
was a newer model with the new style wire harness and cable clamps. To access the cable on
the newer machines remove the document board first and then remove the document board drive
assembly. Next remove the blind cover key # 7 on the parts diagram, to access the screws on the front
rollers, key # 3. A screw and a washer have been add to hold the roller in place on the new style
machines. Now the document plate, key # 8 can be removed from the document drive assembly. The
wire harness is connected to the bottom of key # 8. The part number for the wire harness is MG1-3453-
030.

Title : The DR9080 Motor Continually Runs but Does not Feed The Paper

Problem :
The DR9080 Motor continually runs but does not feed the paper. While checking the sensors in service
mode using the quma tool it was noticed that the light for number 2 in sensor check would "flicker" on
and off at times.

Solution :

In this case the harness for the Doucment Sensor PCB was loose and needed to be reseated.

Title : The Message, 'No page was found in the feeder', is Displayed

Error :
The error message "No page was found in the feeder.", shown below, is displayed when trying to scan.
The scanner is unable to feed paper even while running in "Count Only" mode.

Workaround :
This error message may be caused by a faulty sensor or wire harness. Check the "Document"
sensor and the "Document Tray HP" sensor with the QUMA service tool. If the sensors are not
activating, ensure they are positioned correctly and then try replacing the Tray Cable Assy, MG1-3453-

Title : Will "Skip Blank Page" work with Colored Paper?

Question :
Will "Skip Blank Page" work with Colored Paper?

Answer :

The Skip Blank Page feature uses the percentage of black pixels in black & white mode to determine
whether a page will be skipped. When scanning in Grayscale or Color, the scanned data is binarized
and the skip blank page is then decided by the percentage of black pixels. Depending on the color of
the document, skip blank page may or may not work using colored paper. If it is a dark colored paper, it
is more difficult to skip a blank page. If the document is light colored, it's easier to skip a blank page.

Title : The Pick Up Rollers spin twice after the last page is fed.

Problem :
The Pick Up Rollers spin twice after the last page is fed.

Solution :
This can be caused if the Pick Up Sensor is not deactivating after the last page is fed. The flag for the
Pick Up Sensor should fall into the groove on the paper tray after the last page is fed. If the flag does
not fall into the groove the Pick Up Sensor will stay on and the scanner will attempt to feed paper even
though the tray is empty.

Title : What is RoHS?

Question :
What is RoHS?

Answer :
The RoHS Directive stands for "the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical
and electronic equipment". This Directive bans the placing on the EU "European Union" market of new
electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury,
hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame
retardants.

Manufacturers need to understand the requirements of the RoHS Directive to ensure that their products,
and their components, comply. When did RoHS come into force? The RoHS Directive and the UK
RoHS regulations came into force on July 1, 2006.

The RoHS Directive is an Article 95 single market directive. Enforcing RoHS, The National Weights and
Measures Laboratory (NWML) has been awarded the contract to set up the UK’s national RoHS
enforcement body.

Note:
The RoHS directive is currently not enforced in the US. Some manufacturers who partner with Canon
maybe required to list both the RoHS type and non RoHS type replacement components.

For example see the image below:

Title : Scanner locks up after several scans

Problem :
Example:
New Install on new HP Desktop connected to scanner via USB with USB ports listed as [USB 2.0 High
Speed].
Scanner locks up after several scans.

Solution :
In the Instructions that came with the scanner, there is a section which discusses this issue. Even if the
computer is new and lists its USB ports as 2.0 High Speed, it may not be fully compatible with the
Canon scanner. It may not be able to keep up with the data stream coming from the scanner. In this
case, you must install a PCI USB Card into an open PCI slot within the computer. Canon has verified
the performance of Adaptec PCI USB cards and can recommend them, although other brands may
work as well.

Problem :

After a batch has been fed, the Delivery Rollers continue to rotate for about 5 seconds. Normally, the
Delivery Rollers stop immediately after the last sheet has exited. There are no jam or error indications.

Solution :

This problem was caused by a faulty "Document Sensor", PS4. Using the service tool to test, PS4 was
not activating consistently.

First try cleaning the Document Sensor "window". If the problem persists, check the wiring from the
document sensor to the intermediary connector and then to J505 on the Document tray control PCB
(10_SUB).
