Essential Question
What evidence for evolution can living thing organisms provide?
Essential Objectives
1. I can explain comparative anatomy, developmental biology, and molecular biology can
be used to support the theory of evolution.
2. I can compare embryological development of different species and construct an
explanation of how they are used to identify relationships in evolution.
3. I can analyze and interpret data to determine whether the similarities and differences in
molecular biology supports the theory of evolution.

Evolving Your Knowledge
Proteins, such as cytochrome c, are made from
combinations of 20 amino acids. The graph to the right
shows the number of amino acid differences in
cytochrome c between humans and other organisms.
Use the graph to answer the questions.
2. Which organism has the least differences in the number of amino acids in

cytochrome c compared to humans? Which organism has the greatest difference?

Journal 3:
Molecular Biology
• The study of fossils, comparative anatomy, and embryology used to support for Darwin’s
theory of evolution by natural selection.
• Molecular biology is the study of gene structure and function. The discoveries in
molecular biology have been used to support and to extend much of the data already
collected about the theory of evolution.
• Recall that in evolution, mutations in genes are the source of variations upon which
natural selection acts.
Lesson 2 Review
Summarize It!
1. Classify Examine the list of structures below. Sort them into lists according to whether
they are vestigial, homologous, or analogous features using this space. Then construct a
Analogous structure
Different structure but same
function. (butterfly and fly)
3. Which developmental structure among vertebrates is evidence that they share a common
ancestor?
A. Analogous structures
B. Pharyngeal pouches☑️
C. Variation rates
D. Vestigial structures
4. Infer At the zoo you may see a boa or a python. If you look closely, you will see two
small pelvic spurs, which are related to the pelvis and leg bones of other animals. Why
do these structures exist on snakes?
Because before it might have been a important part of the body but now it has lost it’s purpose
because of evolution, so those two small pelvic spurs might be vestigial structures.
5. Explain. While watching a nature show, you notice that a dolphin’s flipper and a shark’s
fin perform the same function but look different. What is this an example of? Explain
your answer.
This is an example of an analogous structure, because they have the same function but different
structure.
