Law Review: Constellation of Karmic Rights
Paulus Asteorra
As a Jiva themself sows, so they themself reap; no Jiva inherits the good or evil act of another Jiva.
This is how Article I of the Guidance opens. This first Section prohibits the usage of group
responsibility. Jiva may not be punished or rewarded solely on the basis of association with
another person. For example, if three persons have an rp alliance and two of them rebel against
Karma, the third one may not be punished solely for formerly having an alliance with the traitors,
that had nothing to do with their later treason. However, such provision does not completely
disallow punishing the whole group of people, if the group has a design to harm Karma. These
kinds of groups may be designated Hostile Entities in Karma’s law. A Jiva associating with such
Entities, in spite of proscription, is personally guilty for doing so, therefore it is not a violation of
the rule mentioned here to punish them for such an association. Later in the Section, this sentence
follows T
he fruit is of the same quality as the action. This is not a prescription of the punishment
by talion (punishing somebody by doing the same as they did to another, e.g. “an eye for an eye
and a tooth for a tooth”), but a call to reward the Jiva for good actions and punish them for bad
actions and not the other way around. This first section, fittingly, is the concept of karma
conveyed in the legal terminology.
Section 2 of the Constellation of Karmic Rights enumerates the rights to f ree speech, expression,
petition and assembly a
nd furthermore declares that these rights shall not be restrained arbitrarily
by any action of the governance. Some rights have an absolute character, these do not. Their
exercise should be limited due to both the rights of other people (such as the right to not be
discriminated against) and the common good of the region as a whole (e.g., unlawfully
distributing sensitive information is not protected free speech either).
Section 3 establishes two things - first, that No Jiva may be denied the due process of the law.

Karma’s Founding Day!
Levont Calxur
Unless you were living under a rock for the past week or so, you are probably already aware that Karma’s Founding Day has just passed, a date that
had no importance 4 years ago and was just seen as a normal day in the month of May. Most of you probably don’t remember how Karma started, how
it climbed its way up the ranks, and how it got to this point, and most of you probably weren’t in NationStates or Karma around that time, well it’s
alright because I wasn’t around back then either. During Karma’s early days, it wasn’t really that special of a region, I mean sure it was a meritocracy,
which I guess you can consider unique considering that NationStates’ only form of government was and still is, a filthy democracy. Karma had basically
no nations, no World Assembly Members, no nothing, but how did we get here? What happened?
Well, that in of itself, is a long story, but I’ll give you the short version of it… It took Karma around 5 months to reach an all-time high nation count of 152
nations, which is great when you look at it, and not so great when you read my follow-up sentences. The nation count began declining, and the region
was pretty much dead 6 months after that milestone of 152 nations. This wasn’t the end of Karma, however, or else we wouldn’t be here… 1 year after
that decline in activity and nations, the region was back at an incline. Altino decided to refound the region, organize it more, change what was ‘wrong’,
and bring the nation count back up, and well… It happened, and here we are. It may look like nothing happened in those 3 years, but don’t let my very
short summary of the ‘events’ that happened during that time fool you.
Now, back to the present! The Culture Department has organized some events to celebrate this great day, the events went on for the entire week, from
May 25th till May 30th. There were a lot of celebrations, from the Collective RMB Story, Fridate, CYOA, Mad Libs, and many others! It was an
action-filled week that you shouldn’t have missed and if you did… there’s always next year!
