1.0 GENERAL
This specification contains the minimum design, installation, testing and commissioning
requirements for a High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System. The High-Pressure Carbon
Dioxide Fire System is to assure the safety of the occupants in the building during a fire. The
design of the High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall conform to this specification
and the complete High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall be fully compatible to all
components supplied.

2.0 REFERENCE
The referenced codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of quality for
materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these standards and the
text of this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.
The latest revision of the referenced codes and standards shall be used as a minimum guide.
In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and processes
conforming to one group of codes and standards.

 Health and Safety Conditions

In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be employed
throughout.

5.0 SUBMITTALS
The Contractor shall submit the following items for review and approval before commencing
the work:
 Product Data
Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for
each item intended to be furnished and installed.
Manufacturer's catalog data sheets shall be submitted for all nozzles, valves, controls and
all other accessories and system components.
 Installation Instructions
Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
 Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 12.
 Submit Coordination Drawings
Superimposed drawings showing location of each sprinkler and all other activities
simultaneously.
 Hydraulic Calculations
The hydraulic calculations for the entire High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System
shall be by a computer generated hydraulic calculation program. The calculations
shall meet the requirements of NFPA 12.
Hydraulic calculations shall be furnished when extending existing High-Pressure
Carbon Dioxide Fire System.
 As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate nozzles, cylinders, and piping on the Shop Drawings and As-built
plans.
Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.
 Maintenance and Operating Instructions
Submit data conforming to NFPA 12 for maintenance of the system.
Equipment manufacturer recommended spare parts and tools list.

 Test Reports
Accurately record and report the methods of testing, times and dates of the test,
witnesses to the test, and the results of the test.

6.0 QUALITY CONTROL


The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and propose
programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified quality for
approval.
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-Built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.

6.1 Engineering Responsibility


Preparation of working plans, calculations and field test reports by professional
specialized fire protection engineer.

6.2 Single-Source Responsibility


System components and accessories shall be obtained from one source and a single
manufacturer, as far as possible.

6.3 Product Quality


Products shall be free of defects in materials, fabrication, finish and installation.
All materials and performance shall meet the appropriate NFPA standard.
All equipment shall be constructed using new materials designs and built in
accordance with the best practices of the industry.
Each item of equipment shall be listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and/or
approved by Factory Mutual (FM).
Each major item of equipment shall bear the manufacturer’s name, trademark, serial
number and a UL or FM label.
Any nozzle that is damaged, painted, or sprayed with any obstructive material shall
not be accepted.

6.4 Electrical Components, Devices and Accessories


Electrical components, devices and accessories shall be UL Listed and/or FM
Approved and shall meet the requirements of NFPA 70 and NFPA 72.

7.0 DESIGN CRITERIA


High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall be designed to dilute oxygen concentration
level in a protected area to a point where it will not support combustion after discharging the
gas into the protected area. The minimum gas concentration, oxygen level and discharge time
of the agent shall comply with the standard NFPA 12.
A hand hose line systems shall have a quantity of carbon dioxide to permit its use for at least
1 minute. Where simultaneous use of two or more hose lines is possible, a quantity of carbon
dioxide shall be available to support the maximum number of nozzles that are likely to be
used at any one time for at least 1 minute.
The High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall utilizing a fixed pipe and nozzle
distribution network, designed in accordance with NFPA 12 standard, to provide fire
protection, by total flooding or local application
High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall be capable of full operation even in the
event of an electric power supply failure and shall comply with requirements of NFPA 70
standard.
Total Flood Systems and Local Application Systems shall be capable of automatic detection
of fire and automatic/manual actuation of gas discharge circuit in addition to mechanical
means of discharging agent from cylinder storage area.
The High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall be designed to avoid undue danger to
the lives and safety of its occupants from a fire.
The nozzles, controlling devices, protective devices, alarm systems, supervisory devices and
related equipment shall be made compatible so that all equipment shall function together as
specified.
The design of the High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall be coordinated with
architectural, civil, mechanical and electrical, design and construction documents, to ascertain
the required information, to affect a properly designed fire protection system for the building
construction and occupancy classification.
System design and installation shall reflect high quality professional work that properly
accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as well as meets the
design requirements.
The piping system shall be sized in accordance with a hydraulic calculation technique to
ensure availability of flows and pressures required for correct performance of the system.
Duration of the agent shall meet the requirements of NFPA 12 and Project Specifications.

7.1 Hydraulic Calculations


The pipe diameters of the High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall be based
on hydraulic calculations to determine the required pressures and required flows to
the nozzles.

8.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved. All products, system components and hardware shall be in
compliance with NFPA 12. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the installation
of the High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System.
All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with the applicable
NFPA standards and the Project Specifications.
All valves, nozzles, alarms and any additional fire fighting equipment shall be UL listed and/or
FM approved.

8.1 Discharge nozzles


Discharge nozzles shall be sized to provide flow rates in accordance with the system
design..
Discharge nozzles shall be listed or approved for rate of discharge, effective range,
and pattern or area of coverage.
Discharge nozzles shall be provided with frangible discs or blow-out caps to ensure
unobstructed opening upon system operation.
Discharge nozzles shall be permanently marked to identify the manufacturer and to
show the type and equivalent orifice diameter, as per the NFPA 12.

8.2 Gas Storage Cylinders


The high-pressure cylinders shall be manufactured, designed, constructed, tested
and marked in accordance with U.S Department of Transportation (DOT)
specifications or an equivalent governing agency.
Each cylinder shall be provided with a pressure relief device of the rupture disk type.
Cylinders shall be floor mounted and suitably supported on steel rack for each bank
of cylinders, and shall have facilities for convenient individual servicing.
High-pressure CO2 cylinders shall be provided with a weight indicator.

8.3 Valves
All valves used in the fire suppression system shall be suitable for the intended use,
particularly regarding the flow capacity and operation, and shall be in accordance with
NFPA 12. All valves shall be UL listed/ FM Approved.
Valves for high-pressure systems which are constantly under pressure shall have a
minimum bursting pressure of 41,369 kPa. Valves that are not under constant
pressure shall have a minimum bursting pressure of at least 34,474 kPa.

8.4 Control Panel


The control panel shall provide centralized monitoring and control of the fire
detectors, local release devices, abort switches, alarm appliances, and solenoid
valves. On receiving a fire signal from fire detectors or a local release device, the
control panel shall activate the solenoid valves and alarms.
The control panel shall be UL listed and/or FM approved, and complies with the
requirements of NFPA 12 and NFPA 72.

8.5 Discharge Indicator


The discharge indicator shall be designed to display a message to personnel. It shall
be operated by an alarm signal from the control panel and its operation shall continue
even after the agent discharge. The message on the indicator shall flash in red to
keep out of the protected room. The device shall operate on 24 VDC and shall be
powered from control panel.

8.6 Warning Sounder / Strobe


Sounders and strobes shall operate on 24 VDC and shall be powered by the control
panel.

8.7 Pipes, joints and fittings


Piping and fittings shall meet the requirements of NFPA 12.
Pipe and fittings shall be suitable for the agent used.
Copper pipe and fittings shall not be used.

8.8 Pipe Hangers and Supports


Pipe hangers and supports shall meet the requirements of NFPA 12.

9.0 EXECUTION
All products and equipment shall be installed in accordance with MARAFIQ regulations,
applicable local codes and standards, the manufacturer's written installation instructions and
Project Specifications.
The High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire System shall be installed in accordance the
applicable NFPA standards.
Provisions shall be made to facilitate frequent inspection, testing and maintenance as
described in NFPA 12.
Protect all equipment and materials at all times.
Cover and protect equipment and materials from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.

9.1 Protection of Piping and Equipment Against Damage


Protect piping as per NFPA 12. Protect all equipment materials at all times.
Close pipe openings with caps or plugs during installation. Cover and protect
equipment materials from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.

10.0 INSTALLATION
All materials and equipment used in the installation of the High-Pressure Carbon Dioxide Fire
System shall be new and the latest design by the manufacturer.
All materials, valves and devices essential to successful system operation shall be UL Listed
and/or FM approved.
All openings in the room walls and slab made either for present or future equipment, cables
and HVAC ducts shall be properly sealed using approved fire stops.

10.1 Power source


The primary source of energy for the operation and control of the system shall have
the capacity for intended service and shall be reliable.
In the event of a primary power failure, the control panel shall have battery backup to
support the entire system for 24 hours and then perform an alarm sequence for the
maximum discharge time for the longest system discharge plus at least 10 minutes
extra. A charger shall be provided to recover the batteries in 48 hours from a fully
discharge condition. Standby batteries shall be of the sealed, lead acid type.

10.2 Control Panel:


The Control Panel shall be installed at a location near to the entrance to facilitate
easy access. Enclosure shall permit front access only.

10.3 Gas Storage Cylinders


The CO2 extinguishing agent shall be stored at ambient temperatures.
The ambient storage temperatures for local application systems shall not exceed
49OC nor be less than 0OC.
The ambient storage temperatures for total flooding systems shall not exceed 54OC
nor be less than -18OC.
Cylinders shall be floor mounted and suitably supported on steel rack for each bank
of cylinders, and shall have facilities for convenient individual servicing.
High-pressure CO2 cylinders shall be provided with a weight indicator.
The cylinder bank shall be located as near as possible to the area to be protected.

10.4 Discharge Indicator


The discharge indicator shall be installed above the entrance of the protected
facilities.

10.5 Local Release Switch / Abort Switch


The local release switch shall be located outside, near the main door or near the area
being protected. The abort switch shall be installed at the same location where the
local release switch installed.

10.6 Warning Sounder / Strobe


Sounders and strobe lights alarm shall be located inside and outside the protected
room or area.

10.7 Piping
Installed pipe and fittings shall meet the requirements of NFPA 12 and Project
Specifications.
All pipe and fittings shall be installed aboveground.
Close pipe openings with caps or plugs during installation.

10.8 Hanging, Bracing and Restraint of System Piping


Installation of hangers, hanger rods, supports and fasteners shall be in accordance
with the requirements of NFPA 12 and Project Specifications.
All piping, cylinder banks, valves and other appurtenances shall be properly
supported and/or anchored as required by NFPA 12.

10.9 Pipe Sleeves


Sleeves shall be provided where piping passes through walls, floors, roofs, beams
and partitions. Sleeves shall be of sufficient length to pass through entire thickness of
walls, floors, roofs and partitions.
Sleeves shall be secured in proper position and location.
Size and install so that system piping is not stressed.
Sleeves shall be installed prior to construction of walls or pouring of concrete.

10.10 Escutcheon Plates


One piece or split hinge type metal plates shall be provided for piping passing
through floors, walls and ceilings in exposed areas.
Plates shall be securely anchored in place with setscrews or other approved positive
means.

10.11 Installation/Caution Signs


The system shall be installed in accordance with all applicable NFPA 12 requirements
and manufacturer’s design, installation, recharge and maintenance instructions by a
factory trained and authorized personnel.
Visual and audible warning signs/devices shall be provided in conspicuous locations
in every protected space.
Appropriate warning signs/indications shall be affixed outside of those spaces where
concentrations of gas can accumulate, not only in protected areas but in adjacent
areas also where fire suppression agent could migrate or leak. Warning
signs/indications shall include emergency lighting, illuminated escape arrows,
emergency exit signs and the like. Safety caution and indication signs shall be
installed at clear locations stating “Gas Protected Area”.

11.0 COORDINATION
Coordinate location of all nozzles, pipe, gas cylinders, control panels and all necessary
accessories for proper operation of the system.

12.0 TESTING
The completed installation shall be inspected, tested and commissioned by an approved fire
suppression system specialist Engineer of the Fire Suppression System designer/supplier, in
the presence of Company’s representatives.
All mechanical and electrical components including detection and actuation devices shall be
tested as per NFPA 12, 72 and according to the manufacturer’s recommended procedure.
Standard tests shall be carried out for checking the various instruments, instrument loops,
insulation and continuity for cables.
All piping and fittings shall be pneumatically tested as per NFPA 12. Under no conditions shall

Concealed pipe joints such as those in walls, ceilings and the like shall be pressure tested
before the joint is concealed.

12.1 Functional Testing:


After system installation is complete, a functional test of the control devices shall be
performed without actually firing the cylinder(s). Release mechanism of storage
cylinder shall be temporally disabled so that activation of the release circuit would not
release the agent.
Non destructive operational tests on all devices necessary for functioning of the
system including detection and actuation devices shall be conducted.
Verification of all system auxiliary functions shall be made.
A thorough inspection of the distribution piping, supports and nozzles shall be made.

12.2 Field Testing and Acceptance


Field testing of the system shall be conducted by personnel who are trained and
authorized by the system Manufacturer.
The system shall be thoroughly tested for correct operation and function. Flow test
shall be performed on the piping network to verify that flow is continuous and the
piping and nozzles are unobstructed. The test shall include actual operation of all
mechanical and electrical equipment and careful inspection of all piping and nozzles.
Agent shall be discharged into the piping network to all hazards during the test
period. Visual indicators shall be used to verify that gas has discharged out of
nozzles in the system. Verification of concentration achieved and period maintenance
of time shall be done. Gas discharge tests shall be made also to verify operation and
nozzle performance. Testing shall be performed under the supervision of a
representative of the Manufacturer.

12.3 Discharge Test


A full discharge test shall be performed for all CO2 systems installed. They include
Total Flood, Local Application and Handheld Hose Line systems. The system shall
be actuated to discharge the entire design quantity of gas (discharge all pilot
cylinders and slave cylinders of the ‘Main Cylinder Bank’) through the system piping
and nozzles to ensure that gas is discharged into the hazard area and to ensure that
all pressure operated devices function as intended.
Prior to Gas Discharge Testing, proper safety procedures shall be reviewed. These
safety procedures shall be submitted for review and approval.
Contractor shall replenish the quantity of gas used up in performing the Discharge
Test, by replacing the exhausted cylinders.
The completed test record sheets shall be signed by the authorized representative of
the Contractor, specialist Engineer of the Fire Suppression System designer/supplier
who performs the test and Company’s representatives.
On completion of the testing and commissioning, the fire suppression system, and the
fire and gas detection system shall be left in a “live” condition.

13.0 CERTIFICATION
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins, and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.

14.0 TRAINING
Prior to acceptance of the installed system, Contractor shall provide on site training by an
approved fire suppression system specialist Engineer of the Fire suppression system
designer/supplier, for operation, maintenance and trouble shooting of the system. Training
shall consist of:

15.0 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE


The Contractor shall deliver, handle and store equipment and material units in accordance
with Project Specifications.
All products shall be inspected at time of delivery for damage and for compliance with
specifications.
All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the manufacturer.
Nozzles must be handled with care.
Nozzles shall be delivered in their original packages, containers or bundles bearing the brand
name and the name of the material.
All equipment shall be stored in a cool, dry place.
Pipe, fittings, valves, and nozzles shall be stored with open ends sealed until removed for
installation.
Materials shall be protected from weather, soil; and damage during delivery, storage and
construction.
Any products that are damaged or found not to be in accordance with the specifications shall
be immediately replaced.
