OPERATION THROUGH QBD DETECTORS – AUTOMATIC RELEASE OF DELUGE VALVE

SYSTEM
A. Quartz bulb detectors details:-
a) Sprinkler rating :- 79 Degree Celsius
b) Sprinkler type :- Standard Response; Pendant Sprinkler head
B. In occurrence of fire ambient temperature near sprinkler quartz bulb arises, when temperature
near sprinkler bulb exceeds than 79 degree Celsius. Sprinkler sensing bulbs burst which lead to
water discharges through sprinkler.
C. One or many sprinklers can be burst at same time or different time depending upon location of
fire.
D. As water discharge through sprinkler detecting line, pressure drop occurs in priming chamber or
detecting line chamber of deluge valve.
E. Pressure drop by QBD line detected by Pressure Switch which is mounted on QBD line. That
pressure switch send signal to control panel.
F. Drop in pressure of priming chamber leads to opening of diagraph in deluge valve. Thus Deluge
valve is now operated for water discharge through Spray Nozzle line.
G. Water discharge through spray nozzle line for fire extinguishment purpose. All Spray Nozzles will
be in active state to water discharge in a pattern that will cover transformers body to extinguish
fire.
H. While Pressure switch which mounted on QBD line gave signal to control panel, solenoid valve
get operated and water discharge through solenoid valve. Which also lead to dropping Deluge
valve priming chamber pressure.
I. Since water flow through outlet of deluge valve system, motorized gong bell which is mounted
on Deluge valve sounded alarm and pressure switch mounted on outlet pick up water flow
signal.
J. Thus control panel hooter get activated by pressure switch which is mounted on outlet of
Deluge valve. Hooter sounded alarm to control station.

OPERATION THROUGH MANUAL RELEASE SWITCH–MANUAL RELEASE OF SYSTEM VIA

CONTOL PANEL
A. In occurrence of fire, HVWS system can be activated through manual release Switch.
B. Manual switches are located at control panel station. One which is rotary Switch type and
another one is press switch type.
C. One of which can be operated after breaking safety glass. Once Manual release switch is
operated, control panel get signal of fire occurrence which give signal to Solenoid valve to
operate.
D. Solenoid valve discharge water through primping chamber of deluge valve to extinguishment of
fire.
E. Water discharge through spray nozzle line for fire extinguishment purpose. All Spray Nozzles will
be in active state to water discharge in a pattern that will cover transformers body to extinguish
fire.
F. Since water flow through outlet of deluge valve system, motorized gong bell which is mounted
on Deluge valve sounded alarm and pressure switch mounted on outlet pick up water flow
signal.
G. Thus control panel hooter get activated by pressure switch which is mounted on outlet of
Deluge valve. Hooter sounded alarm to control station.

OPERATION THROUGH MANUAL RELEASE –MANUAL RELEASE OF SYSTEM VIA DELUGE

VALVE RELEASE SWITCH
A. In occurrence of fire, operator can manual release system via release switch located on
Deluge valve priming chamber.
B. By operating switch deluge valve priming chamber pressure drop which leads to operating
of deluge valve.
C. Deluge valve operated and water will discharge through spray nozzles for fire
extinguishment purpose.
D. Water discharge through spray nozzle line for fire extinguishment purpose. All Spray Nozzles
will be in active state to water discharge in a pattern that will cover transformers body to
extinguish fire.
E. Since water flow through outlet of deluge valve system, motorized gong bell which is
mounted on Deluge valve sounded alarm and pressure switch mounted on outlet pick up
water flow signal.
F. Thus control panel hooter get activated by pressure switch which is mounted on outlet of
Deluge valve. Hooter sounded alarm to control station.

OPERATION THROUGH BYPASS LINE – VIA GATE VALVE

A. In some scenario deluge valve is not maintained or not working properly. Operator shall open
emergency bypass line gate valve in case of fire.
B. After opening of Emergency Gate valve water discharge through the spray nozzles.
C. Water will discharge through spray nozzles in describe pattern to extinguish fire.
D. As by pass line is operated, no signal of fire or Deluge valve operated signal will be highlighted
on Control panel or on deluge valve.

OPERATING PROCEDURE

Deluge Valve Working Operation

HD Deluge Valve is a quick release, hydraulically operated diaphragm valve. It has three chambers,
isolated from each other by the diaphragm operated clapper and seat seal. While in SET position, water
pressure is transmitted through an external bypass check valve and restriction orifice from the system
supply side to the top chamber, so that supply pressure in the top chamber act across the diaphragm
operated clapper which holds the seat against the inlet supply pressure, because of the differential
pressure design. On detection of fire, the top chamber is vented to atmosphere through the outlet port
via opened actuation devices. The top chamber pressure cannot be replenished through the restricted
inlet port, and the upward force of the supply pressure lifts the clapper allowing the water flow to the
system piping network and alarm devices.

• Actual Pressure at Deluge valve system from main line tapping: - 7 kg/cm2 to 8 kg/cm2
• Minimum pressure required at Deluge valve system as per design hydraulic calculation:-

5 kg/cm2

• Design hydraulic calculation and transformer coverage are mentioned on drawing.
Reference no: - DFS/BBL/BARC/FF/002. Kindly refer the same
• Pressure Switch settings shall be as per site suitable.

• For calculating pressure at Spray Nozzle point. We need to removed spray nozzle and installed pressure
gauge assembly to determine spray nozzle inlet pressure from pipe.
• Pressure at inlet nozzle shall be between 3.5 kg/cm2 to 5 kg/cm2, as per hydraulic calculation.
• Deluge valve shall be operated and pumps shall be in auto position for continuous water supply.
• Spray nozzle at other points not necessary to remove depending upon respective pressure gauge assembly
installed. If required Nozzles at other points can be removed and replace with dummy fittings for temporary
amount of time.
• Once operation starts, pressure gauge will get reading. Note reading of pressure gauge will be in fluctuation
manner as water discharges through other nozzles dynamically.
• After checking and inspecting reading on pressure gauge. Remove pressure gauge assembly and reinstall
spray nozzles.

Water Discharge rate and velocity of HVWS system

A. HVWS system is designed in such a way that it should fulfill required Water discharge rate and pressure at
spray Nozzles.
B. As per Design standard IS 15325:2003 density of water discharge rate shall be not less the 10.2
lpm/min/m2 on entire transformer surface area.
C. Velocity of water in feed pipe shall not exceed than 10 m/s as per design hydraulic calculation.
D. System hydraulic calculation of HVWS system has been submitted to BARC.
E. For witnessing water discharge rate and water velocity in feed pipe. We required flow meter to be install on
system piping after deluge valve assembly.
F. As per current site situation Flow meter is not supply and install on HVWS system. Thus we cannot
observe real time discharge rate of water and velocity of water.
G. But as per hydraulic calculation, system should have minimum pressure at tapping 5 kg/cm2 including
pressure drop.
H. And also at end projector i.e. spray nozzles point pressure should be developed 3.5 kg/cm2. Then we can
conclude that above mentioned water discharge rate and water velocity would be justify as per hydraulic
calculation.

Resetting of HVWS system after operation

1. After HVWS system operation done, HVWS system need to reset to its normal position.
2. Resetting of the HVWS system contain manual operation operating gate valve, deluge valve and
control panel.
3. First step is to close inlet gate valve which is installed before Deluge valve, which cut off the
water supply from main line to HVWS system.
4. If HVWS system is operated through Sprinkler bursting then sprinkler need to replace. If HVWS
operated through manual release switch located on Deluge valve; then manual release to be
close. If HVWS system operated through control panel manual release then release switch need
to bring back to its normal position.
5. After understanding above HVWS operation we can now reset HVWS system.
6. As Gate valve installed before deluge valve is in closed position as mentioned in point no.3; Gate
valve installed after deluge valve need to be close, this precaution is for restricting discharge
which is unnecessary.
7. Control panel of respective HVWS system need to be in turned off condition, as it can give fire
signal which can stop deluge valve from resetting.
8. Check deluge valve for any leakage from solenoid valve, Drain valve, manual release switch or
any other kind of leakage.
9. As all above condition are satisfy then we can start opening Gate valve installed before Deluge
valve. Open gate valve steadily and slowly not allowing system to get sudden shock due to air
trap in system.
10. Opening Gate valve will recharge QBD line. In process gong bell will be operated by water
pressure.
11. Check pressure gauge reading on Inlet and on QBD line. If pressure is settled on QBD line then
resetting of Deluge valve is successful.
12. Switch on Control panel and check is control panel is in normal position. If control panel is in
normal position then we can open gate valve installed after Deluge valve.
13. Put system under observation for an hour to check any kind of leakage in system which causes
pressure drop.
14. Pressure switch settings for Transformer Group-A and B are as follows.
a) QBD line pressure Switch :- 4 bar or kg/cm2 on falling pressure
b) Deluge valve outlet pressure switch:- 1 bar or kg/cm2 on rising pressure.
Stopping of HVWS system after operation

1. If HVWS system operated by Manual realease switch from control panel or remot location.
2. To stopping this operation operator need to press Emergency push button located at Control panel.
3. By pressing Emergency push button solenoid valve operation will be suspended, thus HVWS system
operation will be stopped.
4. Also, release manual release switch which will return control panel to normal position.
5. If HVWS is operated by Bursting of sprinkler, operator need to close incoming water supply by closing
Gate valve located before Deluge valve. And then replace burst Sprinkler.
6. Also, Press emergency push button to stop solenoid valve operation.
7. If HVWS system operated by Manual realease switch located at Deluge valve station. Then operator need
to close Manual release switch located at Deluge valve station.
8. Close incoming water supply from main line which will stop HVWS operation.
