EE351 TEST 2

Question 1 (30 marks)

You are a lead transmission engineer tasked to design a DC transmission line

between the coast-line of West New Britain (WNB) Province across the Vitiaz
Strait (ocean channel) to the coastline of Morobe Province to interconnect with
the Ramu grid. You have opted to transmit bulk power through a 230 kVrms AC
system to the shoreline of WNB and convert to DC across the channel to mainland
of Morobe and reconvert to 230 kV AC for interconnection to the Ramu grid.
Assuming that the total DC line resistance is 12 Ω, and the inductance is large
enough to consider the dc current to be ripple-free.

Your task is to transmit 150 MW geothermal power of AC system from WNB

Province to AC system on mainland of Morobe Province over a DC line.

(a) List the advantages of the DC conversion.

(b) Sketch the basic converter topologies labelling the different converters.

(c) Discuss the operations of the converters in Part (b).

(d) Determine the maximum DC voltage (for α1 = 0⁰).

(e) Select a suitable firing angle (α2) for convert 2 to give a suitable DC
voltage less than that computed in Part (d) above.

(f) Calculate a suitable DC current to deliver the 150 MW power.

(g) Calculate a suitable DC voltage at converter 1 (in WNB) in order to

make up for the voltage drop along the DC line.

(h) Calculate the required firing angle (α1) at converter 1 (in WNB),

(i) Calculate the power loss (assume (Irms ≈ Io), and

(j) Calculate the total power supplied to Converter 1 (WNB) in order to

compensate for the power loss.

Question 2 (20 marks)

The three-phase controlled rectifier of Figure Q2 is supplied from a

4160-Vrms line-to-line 60-Hz source. The load is a 120 Ω resistor. (a)

(a) Determine the delay angle required to produce an average load

current of 25 A.
(b) Estimate the amplitudes of the voltage harmonics V6, V12, and
V18.
(c) Determine the amplitude of the harmonic currents,

Note: You will need to refer to graph of Figure 4.21 of your textbook
to compute the harmonics. Use the equation for impedance at the
respective harmonics level n=6, n=12, and n=18.

Question 3 (20 marks)

A square-wave inverter has a dc source of 125 V, an output frequency

of 60 Hz, and an RL series load with R = 22Ω and L=26mH.
Determine
(a) an expression for load current,
(b) rms load current, and
(c) average source current.

Question 4 (30 marks)

The full-bridge inverter is used to produce a 60-Hz voltage across a
series RL load using bipolar PWM. The dc input to the bridge is 100
V, the amplitude modulation ratio ma is 0.9, and the frequency
modulation ratio mf is 21 [ftri=(21)(60)=1260 Hz]. The load has a
resistance of R =10Ω and series inductance L=20 mH.
Determine:
(a) the amplitude of the 60-Hz component of the output voltage and
load current,
(b) the power absorbed by the load resistor, and
(c) the THD of the load current.
