ARTICLES

The indefinite article has two forms a /an:

A is used with singular nouns and before words that start with a consonant or a
semivowel (w,y)
Examples: a window, a hand, a table, an umbrella, etc.
AN is used with words that start with a vowel: an apple, an egg, an Italian student
With mute h: an hour, an honest person.
Use Some for indefinite nouns in plural: a table, some tables, a house, some
houses, an hour, some hours.

The definite article has only one form the, that is the same for all nouns:
The boy, the boys the girl, the girls.
- The article the is used before singular or plural nouns to indicate:
 Specific people or thing
 People or things that are known to the speaker or listener: Example:
Are you coming to the concert tomorrow night?
 People or things that have already been mentioned before: Example I
have a dog and a cat (mentioned for the first time).
The dog is a Dalmatian and the cat is a Persian (mentioned in the
previous sentence.

- The article the is also used before:

 Nouns of which only one example can exist: the Sun, the Moon, the
world, the weather, the sky, etc.
 Nouns that are made specific: The woman in the red dress is really
pretty. I like the flowers that you gave me.
The following cases do not require an article:
 When referring to our own family: Dad, mum, grandpa, Aunt Mary, etc.

En resumen: usamos a / an cuando nos referimos a algo indefindo:
I want a soda (cualquiera)
There is a bag, cualquier mochila
Pero si la definimos usamos the:
I want the soda that is in the fridge-
The bag that you have is bigger that mine: la mochila que tú tienes es más grande
que la mía.
Las reglas para utilizar the se encuentran explicadas arriba. Son más complejas
pero en esta Unidad solo compararán the with some and a/an, de todas maneras
es bueno que las tomen en cuenta porque lo verán más adelante si quieren sacar
un certificado de inglés.
