Q.3 (a) A hot gas of temperature 130 C is running in a steel pipe (ke 45WimK) hus an inside and
outside diameters of 20em and 2em respectively
The pipe 1s covered with two layers of insulations inner one is Sem thick (k=0.04Wimk) and the
outer one is 4cm thick (k=0.06W/mK). The covered pipe is laid in atmosphere at 15 C. Ifthe inside
and outside convective heat transfer coefficients are 20 Wim’K and 6W/m'K respectively. Calculate
the rate of heat transfer from hot gas to atmosphere per meter length of the pipe? And determine the
temperature between insulating layers
) What do you understand by critical radius?
‘Q4. a) Write the boundary conditions for a rectangular fin insulated at the endby A rectangular fin of Smm, 15 em wide and 50 em long is attached to a hot plate at a tempera
of 85 C, and the fin is insulated at the end. If the conductivity of the fin material is 60 WimKand
convective heat tran:
sfer coefficient is 12 W/m°K. For an ambient temperature of 33 C. Calculate:
i)-Total heat loss from the fin surface , (ii)-temperature at the end of the fin.
iii)-temp. at the middle of the fin and iv} fin efficiency.
Q5.a) What is the difference between the steady and unsteady heat conduction?
(b) A temperature distribution through a large wall 40cm thick heated from one side at a certain time
is given by: t= 55-35x=30x?-20x? +10x* where x is in meter and tin C. If the area is 10 m
Calculate: i) The heat entering, and leaving the wall in unit time.
ii)- The heat energy storage in the wall in unit time,
iii)- The rate of temperature change with time at x=0 and at x=0.4m.
iv Locate where the ratg of heating (or cooling) is maximum.
Take k = 12W/mK and a= 0.03m’/hr). .
