Mother and Baby

Editor’s Note

W hen you are a parent, shopping evolves from being a leisure

activity to one of necessity. And yet, all of it is not all that

necessary. When we were expecting little S, I went all out to
make sure I had ticked off everything on my “baby essentials”
list. I invested a great deal of time in researching the best and
most popular brands, and sourcing them from all over the world,
before his birth, and then through impending infancy and
toddlerhood. Now, I am thankful for having put in the time,
energy and money into this. And yet, there were so many misses.
I learned very early on, that a lot of the 'essentials' were not that
at all. To name a few:
1. Diapers depend on weight NOT age of the child
2. The baby NEVER slept on the cot, but ALWAYS with me on my bed
3. An imported car seat did not fit well with my Indian car.
4. In addition to the one that we had already bought BEFORE he was
born, we had to go through three different strollers before finding
one that worked with us – the baby as well as our lifestyle
5. You get A LOT of gifts by way of blankets and socks and mittens
6. You DON'T need a baby food maker; just a simple blender would do
7. My toddler was AVERSE to safety accessories like crawling elbow
and knee cushions
So, go ahead and indulge. After all, it IS the season to shop and
with baby in your life (or to-be), it's also enough reason to shop.
However, remember that when it comes to parenting, being
prepared for the eventual, and yet ready for the unexpected, is
half the battle won!
Happy shopping and Merry Christmas everyone!

highlight of this park is the amphitheatre
built to promote and exhibit talent of
the children.

“This is a park uniquely designed

for the first time in India, in hospital
premises. Incorporating rehabilitation,
remediation, and recreation under
one roof, the park was conceptualised
by the Head of Wadia’s Physiotherapy
department, Dr Urmila Kamat.
Overcoming the challenges of making
this concept a reality, the creation of this park was executed by Kajal Gaba, a mural designer of “Once upon my wall”.
The implementation was possible due to our association Lions Club of Juhu and Powerica as a part of their CSR
initiative,” said Dr Minnie Bodhanwala, Chief Executive Officer of the Wadia Hospitals.

Kavita Channe on the being mum to
the two loves of her life – daughter
Micah and son Maverick
BY KRISELLE FONSECA

A
merican TV personality Kavita
Channe is no stranger to the M&B
family. The leggy lass struck a pose
with her daughter Micah in August
last year, and since then, much has
changed in her life. “My life is extremely chaotic,
exciting, new, stressful, interesting and beautiful
all at the same time,” she tells us. She catches us
up on being single mama to Micah, now two, and
her new six month-old baby boy Maverick, and
running her rosé wine business, Channé Rosé

“One would think that you would slow down a bit

when you have children. However, if anything,
I feel like my work calendar has become even
more crazy and hectic! But I wouldn’t have it any
other way. Between being asked on TV shows,
entrepreneur and entertainment podcasts, as well
as working with various charitable organisations,
to being asked to speak at many events – these
opportunities keep me very active and going.

born. Funny enough, my first
impressions of him were that
he was extremely physical and
strong. He held in to our fingers
so tight. He also had biceps from
day one. From the minute I saw
him I had that ‘in love’ feeling.
It was a different feeling than my
daughter. With my daughter it was
like an ‘in love’ feeling as a best
friend and with my son it was like
‘can I do your laundry for the rest
of my life?!’ I would do anything
for both my children, however, my
daughter already likes to do her
own laundry thankfully due to her
Montessori education. I named
her Micah, meaning ‘magical’,
and that’s how she truly is.

BABY CRIB
The crib is where your newborn is
going to spend a large chunk of his

that makes him feel safe and snug. It
is important to choose a crib that
would sustain you a long time—
there are a number of cribs in the
market that can transform into
toddler and full size beds, to let you
get the most use out of it. Look for
one that has a firm mattress, as
contrary to popular belief, too soft a
mattress can increase the risk of
suffocation. You will also need an
adjustable mattress, you will need to
keep lowering it as your child grows.
Ideally, the top of the crib’s rail
should be 24-26 inches above the
mattress. Make sure you follow the
crib’s instruction manual to the T, or
else call in for expert help. Assembly
is the most crucial part of your baby’s
crib, and you wouldn’t want to
endanger his safety. You’ll find hand-

homes, and while it is perfectly
alright, you need to check for safety

out for rust and get it re-painted.
Check for loose nuts and bolts, as
any injury from these is harmful.

We got stylist Shilpi Sharma of the Indie Project Store to share

wedding season,
the biggest worry
expectant mums
have is how to
dress the bump. Maternity
fashion has been through
much of a revolution, and one
can find multiple choices in
casual and business pregnancy
wear. However, party wear for
pregnant women, especially in
the Indian scenario, at times,
can be a bit tricky. Here are
some quick fixes to let you
carry on in style, as you carry.

Any conversation around styling

must begin with ‘body types’,
as styling is nothing but the
ability to craft and coordinate
various looks that works for an
individual, and the kind of body
structure one has, plays a big
role in that.

Contrary to popular belief,

body types during pregnancy

Type 4: Carrying High

Depending on the type, you
can work on the appropriate
styles and looks to get the best
results.

Someone who is ‘small all

over’ and gaining weight just
around the midriff can perhaps
work with detailing around the
neckline or statement jewellery
to keep attention to the face Vs
someone who is gaining overall
weight, who can create softer,
more romantic and flowy looks,
to maintain a smooth transition
from head to toe for the
onlookers. Similarly, women
carrying low can opt for heavier
embroidery or garments with
more detailing on the blouse to
create a balance, and vice versa
for someone carrying high.

Indian styles and fits that

work for almost all women
during pregnancy are
traditional outfits like floor
length anarkalis, which come
in various designs and cuts.
During the advanced pregnancy
stage, anarkalis with kalis
flowing right from the neckline
would give a better coverage
for your bump. If you want to
go all out and don a lehenga,
you can ditch the choli for a
kurti instead, to keep the look
cohesive and comfortable.
Sarees are another great
option for this phase, pairing
them with long blouses, tops,
or shirts will keep the look
contemporary and fresh, and
keep the classic vibe going, for
more traditional occasions.

Wear your
heart on your
sleeve
Babies grow up in the blink of an eye, and before you
know it, all those cute moments are a thing of the
past. But there are ways to preserve some of your
special memories by turning them into jewellery.
Meet Saakshi Mehra who makes DNA and breastmilk

B
orn and brought up in Mumbai,
Saakshi Mehra did her MBA in HR,
and was working in the corporate
sector for three years. After which,
she got married and gave up her job.
“But I always had a strong urge to be financially
independent,” she says. Two years into the marriage,
her son Yuvaan was born. “Like any mum, I would
always be ready with a camera to capture his firsts...
His first smile... his first crawl... his first walk, etc
etc. I breastfed my son for almost three years and
after weaning him, I found myself reminiscing of
the bond. It was magical!” she remembers. A few
months from then, Saakshi came across information
about a woman in Australia who creates breastmilk
and DNA jewellery. She loved teh idea and tried to
collaborate with this lady in vain.

74 | December 2019
Mother and Baby motherandbabyindia.com
That’s when Saakshi decided to start creating these
keepsakes herself. “After months of experimentation
(thanks to my sister lending me some of her breastmilk),
and watching some of my initial experiments turning into
a myraid of undesirable colours, I finally found the perfect
marriage between milk and chemistry,” she reveals. And
soon, Mom’s Memoiirs–Wear Her Care was born in 2018.
At the home studio, located in Mumbai, Saakshi creatively
designs breastmilk jewellery and keepsake preservation
in a variety of handcrafted designs. “I use mother’s
breastmilk, baby’s cord stump, first curl and first tooth.
The kind of memories that only come once in your life,
but can last forever, in the form of precious gems,” she
says proudly.

jewellery in gold and silver and metal serves to offer
precious momentos for a father, mother, son (in form
of keychains, cuff links, tie pins) or daughter (in form of
pendants, rings, earrings, bracelet) starting from Rs 2,000
onwards.

“Every piece of jewellery is lovingly handmade and takes a

whole lot of time—from milk preservation to the end product.
It is a completely natural process without the use of any
harmful chemicals. Breastmilk undergoes a drying and
curing process, post which it is infused in the jewellery. Your
breastmilk keepsake is made with just that –breastmilk!”
she reveals. And in case you worry about the samples getting
all mixed up, Saakshi assures, “I carefully organise and label
all my clients’ breastmilk when collecting, storing, prepping
and casting all the pieces.” Like everything thats handmade,
jewellery that is made with mimum process will not be
perfect or consistent in quality. “It is nothing like a mass-
produced jewellery piece from a store, but I assure you that it
is infused with pure love,” she says.

ANY HURDLES FACED.....

I believe women make great entrepreneurs because we
take calculated risks. We are strong with a great attitude
towards bouncing back from hard knocks! So yes offourse
faced alot of hurdles right from sourcing my raw materials
to the society accepting the word ‘Breastmilk jewellery’
(considering breastfeeding to be touchy topic in Indian
culture). I feel the attitude is gradually shifting thanks to the

section of our society. Mom’s Memoiirs started in January,

Preschool kids rule ok!

TALKS WELL IN SENTENCES
By now, your preschooler can talk
clearly in sentences and probably recite rhymes, too.
What you can do: Keep talking. And rather than correcting
her grammar when she says something wrong, repeat it
back to her in the correct formation. “It’s good to take
equal turns in the conversation,” says Emmie. ‘We learn best
having conversations in which we feel equally important.’

LEARNS TO USE CUTLERY

Between the ages of three and five, your child will start to
learn to use cutlery and eat independently. Joanne says,
“Lots of children struggle with this. It’s also around this age
that you may notice your child is left-handed.”
What you can do: “Do anything you can to encourage
developing fine motor control,” says Joanne. “Playing
with little toys and painting will help prepare for
using a pen and cutlery.”

ASKS QUESTIONS
‘Why Mummy? But why?’ A recent study showed
that mothers are asked nearly 300 questions in a
day! And tempting though it may be, telling her
to ‘ask Daddy’ isn’t always going to cut it.
What you can do: Encourage your child
to listen as well as talk. Joanne says, “That
starts with you listening to them, even if you
don’t feel like discussing the finer points of
Postman Pat at 6am.”

ARGUES
It’s very normal and healthy for your
preschooler to become argumentative.
“It’s usual for children to challenge
their parents’ opinions as they develop
a greater vocabulary and awareness,”
says Dr Susan Turner.

What you can do: Try not to argue back

with your little one. “Explain your point
of view firmly and clearly, then try to move
on,” says Dr Susan. “Children will try to
push boundaries, but fundamentally they
like to know where they stand.”

BUDDY TIME
If your child is over five years of
age, it can be a boon instead of
a nightmare to shop with her.
They enjoy the job of going
out somewhere and many of
them like the fact that they are
helping you. Take Manya Ravi’s

for instance. “She loves to come

She is also allowed to count out

comes clothes shopping with me.
She loves the fact that she can
pick out my clothes and has even
learned to suggest what colour or
style would better suit me. I make
sure that we buy her something
too, and we discuss all this before
leaving the house to make sure
she knows what to expect. I
actually enjoy such outings, and
we get to spend some quality

she says.
