Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn stepped out of 2019 with a Top Ten album under their belt, Eton
Alive, their biggest sold out tour to date and the swagger of a band that have never been more relevant,
topically challenging and downright entertaining.

Sleaford Mods are set to continue their onslaught into 2020 with the release of All That Glue, a collection
of songs spanning the last seven years of the bands career; an array of crowd pleasers, B sides, unheard
tracks and rarities for fans and the curious, released via Rough Trade. Over the past few years Sleaford
Mods have become one of the most intractable British pop stories. One of its best. Their music is drawn
at a flawless fault-line of anger, tenderness and humour, a triumvirate of raw energy which frequently
jostles in the space of a cadence for supremacy. On record you can hear their sinews, live you can touch
their veins.

Ahead of All That Glue's release the band will be making available fan favourite Jobseeker for the first
time. In addition, footage from the duo's acclaimed sell out show last year at the Eventim Apollo, will be
released for the first time and kicks off with an incendiary performance of Tweet Tweet Tweet.

Limited edition independent store-only double white vinyl includes a 16-page A5 booklet - a précis in the
inimitable style of Jason Williamson - documenting Sleaford Mods inexorable rise since their inception in
2011 to the present day, together with praise from the incomparable Iggy Pop.

“What Kinda Music” is an astonishing collaboration between two artists of very different disciplines, and
one of the most unique and seamlessly original projects of its ilk to date. Moving fluidly through sleek
electronica, avant-garde jazz, vintage hip hop and so much more, Misch and Dayes take you on a journey
that is by turns surprising and spontaneous, heady and head spinning, and nothing less than compelling
– a singular vision which fuses the DNA of both musicians with spectacular results, as can be seen in the
title track, which comes backed by a gorgeously atmospheric video by XX.

Even though the fundamental bones of this project came together very quickly, its actual provenance
stretches back much, much farther back, with the pair not only growing up in the same area of South
East London, but Misch actually seeing Dayes play on drums in the school talent show for the first time
when he was roughly 8 or 9. They both kept tabs on each other – Misch becoming a fan of Dayes’ act
YussefKamaal, Dayes clocking his videos in 2014 – but it was only when they met at a launch party for
Misch’s debut LP “Geography” in 2018 that the proverbial creative sparks began to fly. “As a musician
you’re always looking for contemporaries who can push you and challenge you and make you better”,
says Dayes. “I instantly felt that with Tom – he was such a gifted musician, and so prolific”. That summer
they decided to go into the studio together, jam a little, and see what happens, with no other
expectation placed upon it.

As it turns out, the music came fast and furiously. Two initial tracks were suddenly followed by a handful
of others, and the pair found themselves contemplating what to do next. “Pretty soon, we knew that
something was gelling”, Dayes says. “It didn’t feel like a one-off collaboration, it felt like a body of work”.
What made the pair click, according to Misch and Dayes, were the exact same factors that meant it
shouldn’t, by all rights, work. Misch says, “Yussef comes from a more experimental background, and he
has a lot of loose, crazy ideas. I know how to write a catchy melody, but with interesting chords and have
a good understanding of popular song forms, so I think I streamlined those ideas and made them
accessible”. And certainly, in “What Kinda Music” you can sense the DNA of both musicians, but fusing so
effortlessly and beautifully that it creates something else entirely, the appropriately named “Lift Off”
sending goosebumps with its jazz flecked crescendo, and “Night Rider” hynotising with its deeply
mesmeric grooves. “I have a love for harmony and chords”, Misch adds. “Working with someone like
Yussef, who has such a gifted sense of rhythm allowed a perfect balance”.
Throughout the record, there is an utterly joyful feel of two musicians at the top of their game sparking
off one another, picking up ideas and running with them – zigging where the other zags, ebbing where
the other flows, with Misch producing the majority of the record and both having a hand in the overall
sound and feel of the record.

“Working with Yussef has actually changed the way I work as a musician”, Misch muses. “He’s pushed me
and unlocked a more experimental part of me that I hadn’t really allowed myself to explore before. I
think we really did impact each other in a fundamental way”. Dayes is similarly effusive in his praise for
Misch. “A musician like him, who’s at the top of his game, he doesn’t need to do this”, he raves. “He can
just keep doing the same thing and why not? He’s killing it. The fact that he’s so humble, that he’s so
curious about everything and open to collaboration, speaks a lot to him as an artist, because it’s not easy
finding musicians who want to collaborate. Something always gets in the way, whether it’s ego or their
team or whatever. But with Tom it felt like the intention was purely creative, and that’s what made it
exciting”. In fact, Dayes says that the intentions of the record go even deeper than just music. “Both our
parents who’d never met each other before, are now best friends as a result of this, they now see each
other more than we do! I’d like to think, in some small way, that this album has a similar impact for
people too – everything feels so divided these days, it would be nice for people to hear the record and
hear two very different musicians coming together and realise it doesn’t have to be that way”.

The two-time Mercury Prize nominee Ghostpoet (aka Obaro Ejimiwe) follows up 2017’s acclaimed 'Dark
Days + Canapés’ with a record which couldn’t feel more prescient, a dystopian snapshot of the universal
unease and anxiety we feel as we enter into this new decade, an uncertain future distilled across these
10 vital tracks.

The bluesy, gritty ‘Concrete Pony’ is the perfect entry point to the record – in Obaro’s own words; “It’s a
snapshot of where we’re at as a society I feel, we seem to have everything and nothing at all. Infinite
possibilities and choices galore but we seem set in stone, frozen in place, oblivious to the storm clouds in
the distance…”

Recorded in London and written, arranged and produced by Ghostpoet, ‘I Grow Tired But Dare Not Fall
Asleep’ incorporates a myriad of sounds and styles but is anchored by the more alt-rock sonics presented
across his last two records. It features guest vocals from an eclectic mix of artists; Art School Girlfriend,
Skinny Girl Diet’s Delilah Holiday, SaraSara and Katie Dove Dixon. Obaro has always had a keen ear for
collaboration, having worked with the likes of Massive Attack, Nadine Shah, Melanie Di Biasio, Maximo
Park’s Paul Smith and Damon Albarn’s Africa Express amongst others across his distinguished career.

Run The Jewels, the lauded duo of El-P and Killer Mike, have shared the long-awaited details of their
feverishly anticipated new album, Run The Jewels 4. Set for a June 5 release via Jewel Runners / RBC
Records / BMG, this eleven song, 40 minute powerhouse is their most ferocious and focused effort to
date, and sports a lineup of all-star guests including Pharrell Williams, Mavis Staples, 2 Chainz, Zack de la
Rocha, Josh Homme, DJ Premier, and Greg Nice. Recorded primarily at Rick Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios
and the iconic Electric Lady Studios in NYC, RTJ4 represents two years of intensive writing, recording,
distilling, and amplifying the most potent elements of their music. The result is a collection of wall-to-
wall bangers illuminating the group's unique ability to straddle the worlds of pointed social commentary
and raw, boisterous fun.

The new album is preceded by two singles, both of which arrived to rapturous reception. The first,
“yankee and the brave (ep.4),” dropped during an impromptu Instagram Live session the duo held as
shelter in place orders were starting to take hold. Days later, the second single “ooh la la (feat. DJ
Premier & Greg Nice)” made a surprise debut in the season finale of the hit Netflix series Ozark, and
became the #5 most Shazam’d song in the country. This was soon followed by the song’s glorious new
music video, directed by Brian & Vanessa Beletic, which quickly shot to the #7 trending position on
YouTube, surpassing 1.5 million views in its first week, and brilliantly setting the stage for the arrival of
RTJ4.

The time between albums has been a very busy one for the duo, including scoring their first gold-
certified record for “Legend Has It” from RTJ3; receiving their first Grammy nomination for the song
“Chase Me,” a collaboration with Danger Mouse for the hit film Baby Driver; embarking on a full US
arena tour with Lorde; contributing an exclusive song for the Marvel blockbuster Venom; and landing a
major sync in a global Cadillac ad, which premiered during the 2020 Academy Awards. Additionally, Killer
Mike debuted his acclaimed Netflix show, Trigger Warning with Killer Mike, continued his advocacy for
Bernie Sanders, and lent his political muscle to the successful election of Atlanta’s first female black
mayor, Keisha Lance Bottoms. He’ll also be making his Hollywood debut in a soon to be announced
feature film. Meanwhile, his partner in rhyme and RTJ producer El-P stayed busy in the studio making the
music for RTJ4, contributing a song to the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning film Roma, scoring the biopic
Capone starring Tom Hardy (which makes its digital debut today), and began a major reissue campaign
for his celebrated solo recording catalog. He also made a surprise cameo in the new season of Mr. Robot
with Remi Malek.

TONGA, the balloon filled rap, grime and dubstep party by Mike Skinner and Murkage Dave, had been a
series of shoobs to remember. Copenhagen to Manchester to Berlin. Brum to Brixton. Usually arriving
with a coterie of legendary UK figureheads and gobby upcomers in tow, like Kano, Giggs, Jammer or
Jaykae, the pulsating essence of the nights needed to be immortalised. The original plan had been to
release a TONGA album. But as night moved to day, and day moved along to night, it… just didn’t
happen. Instead, a new mixtape titled None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive steps up to take its
place. Recorded between work on his film and accompanying solo The Streets album, it is the
unpredictable sonic continuation of those parties. Taking in UK Funky and twilight zone UK rap, and with
guest spots ranging from Grammy nominated psychedelia sovereign Tame Impala to cult south London
rapper Jesse James, as well as 2019’s key-fiend-friendly drum’n’bass collab with Chris Lorenzo, None Of
Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive is the most eclectic and highly collaborative collection of songs from
The Streets yet. Or as Mike puts it with characteristic distinction: “it’s really just a rap duets album.”
Every track has one if not two guests, who, though underpinned by Mike’s distinctive lyrical flair, usually
perform atop a genre or sound not previously explored within the realm of The Streets. “You know that
thing where if you wore it the first time round, don’t wear it the second time round? I would never put
on Aquascutum at this point in my life. It would be stupid, a pastiche of what I did twenty years ago. For
all of us. Whereas now I’m going back and I’m picking things that I didn’t pick before.” The inclusion of,
say, Mercury Prize nominated punk group IDLES (who perform what Mike describes as a sea-shanty
tinged track inspired by an overnight ferry to Dover) and teenage wünderkind Jimothy Lacoste help
ground things firmly in the here and now.

But there are familiar faces of the past too. Birmingham legend, Dapz On The Map, pops up on merky
rap track “Phone Is Always In My Hand”. While Rob Harvey, previously of The Music and Skinner
collaboration The D.O.T, tunes into pensieve penultimate track “Conspiracy Theory Freestyle”. “The
guests had to be into me, as much as I was into them,” jokes Mike, of the featured artist selection
process. Really, though seemingly disparate on paper, the acts on the record are connected by their
singular talent for “talking about normal stuff.” “All the different things I’ve tried to do, they’re who is
doing that now.” “But instead of talking about abstract emotions on this record, I’m talking about things
and objects and details.” Couched in those UK and Euro wide experiences with TONGA, this results in
tales of hardly partying, but partying hard. The path to excess.

The morning trying to climb in under the curtains as you’re busy putting the world to rights. Like
anything that happens between the nightclub and the bus home, there’s as much connection as
disconnection in this world; as many new relationships forged as there are trails left behind from the
ghosts of previous companionships past. Communication, or lack thereof, plays a huge part in this
present-day experience. “One thing I’ve ended up doing is talking about being on my phone,” says Mike.
“It was very easy on my first album to say, well: where am I? I’m in a pub. I’m at home. I’m in a betting
shop. I’m getting a kebab. It felt fairly straightforward and no one had really written about it. Whereas
when making this record, everything now basically happens on your phone.” These dual themes of
nightclub and connection land the record in the simple yet eternally complicated prism of human
interaction. “You’re ignoring me but you’re watching my stories”, on “Phone Is Always In My Hand”, is a
black comedy mantra of our times. Same goes for “every girl has a dude in her inbox talking to himself”
on the Oscar #WorldPeace featuring “The Poison I Take Hoping You Will Suffer”. References abound to
missed calls (on opening track “Waiting For It To Stop”, Kevin Parker sings, trance like, about neglecting
to call someone back) and “five minute” journeys (the kind where you lie about leaving the house).
Despite its humble mixtape beginnings, None Of Us Are Getting Out Of This Life Alive is a precise and
very human body of work from a modern UK music pioneer. Emotionally poignant, full of one liners, club
ready. More than anything, it’s exciting – a call back to those fun and responsibility free evenings at
TONGA. Yet “the result is much more than I thought it would be. It’s become a real album,” says Mike.
And so, as the new decade begins, so too does a new era for The Streets...

Simbi Ajikawo, crowned Little Simz, lets her work do the talking - and her prolific releases and boundary-
breaking achievements clearly tell a story of a pioneering hip-hop artist who leads the way on her own
terms. Giving lauded, energetic performances, critically acclaimed albums, sold-out headline shows
around the world, and international tours with the likes of Gorillaz, Anderson .Paak and Ab-Soul, this
visionary 24 year old woman from North London is living out her childhood dreams to heights of
excellence - and inspiring her generation to do the same.

STAFF COMMENTS

Millie says: North London’s Little Simz has turned hip hop on its axis in recent years and excels herself
with ‘Grey Area’, an LP exploding with high energy, rapid flow and sharp production. A bold and
ingenious lyricist, she peppers her fourth album with twists of dry humour and quick wit; ‘had to let you
mature like some fine wine’ from the hit track “Selfish” gets me every time. These comedic phrases are
matched with provocative barbs and personal experiences, lending this flawless listen depth and
realness. Her bars are intelligent and fierce, leaving no doubt that this is a powerful black female voice in
hip hop whose importance should not be overlooked. “Pressure” juxtaposes melancholic piano chords
with fat off-kilter beats, a balance which is mirrored by her emotive and gritty lyrics. Alongside this, “101
FM”s’ 8-bit beats are reminiscent of a forgotten game-console soundtrack, the perfect backdrop for a
nostalgic narrative focusing on growing up in London and playing Mortal Kombat.

However “Venom” has to be the stand out track on the album for me, you can feel her rage as it strikes
through each verse, exploring themes of inequality of race, gender and class throughout: “They would
never wanna admit I'm the best here, from the mere fact that I've got ovaries”. The focus she draws
upon surrounding her experience as a woman in hip-hop and within wider-society is refreshing and
important. Her flow is incredible, I can’t do it justice to just say how good it actually is; this is one
amazingly talented woman. If you listen to one song from this entire booklet, make it this.

scrawled on the menu board. Underneath this beautiful coupling of words were it's components, half a

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Sleaford Mods hit us hard with another voracious and aggressive commentary on modern life
with their trademark combination of wit and vitriol, backed by a thumping but decidedly downplayed
backline. Snarling, punky spoken word passages and gritty dusty drum machines. If you like the Mods,

The latest installment of Light In The Attic’s exclusive vinyl and digital singles series features Toronto’s

recorded in 1982 by Milwaukee’s funk/soul pioneers Majestics. The newly recorded cover and the
original version are available for streaming and on “Majestic Pink” 7” vinyl.

“As lovers of old soul, funk and rare recordings, ‘Key to Love’ has always been a song that has had an
impact on our heart and ears,” BADBADNOTGOOD said. “We hope our version relays how special this
song is and gives it some new listeners and a second life […] It’s an incredibly beautiful song that
deserves to be heard, and we hope to play a small part in that.”

The original Majestics single is highly sought after by diggers and DJs worldwide not only for “Key To Love
(Is Understanding) but also for ”Class A”, which is considered the first-ever rap recording to come out of
Milwaukee.

“It is a pleasant surprise,” Donald Cooper of Majestics said upon hearing BADBADNOTGOOD’s version of
the song. “They did a good job and it was well done with their own slight personal twist […] [it’s] an
honor to be recognized."
The single follows Mac DeMarco’s cover of Haruomi Hosono’s “Honey Moon” in the series, which
features artwork conceptualized by Los Angeles-based fine artist Robbie Simon. These tunes come on
the heels of widely popular past entries in the series, including pop-auteur Ariel Pink with future-funk
pioneer Dâm Funk covering Donnie & Joe Emerson’s eternal anthem “Baby,” the inimitable Mark
Lanegan covering the melancholy folk of Karen Dalton, and the one-and-only Iggy Pop with the Zig Zags
transforming Betty Davis’ dirty funk into a heavy Sabbath grind.

Since bursting out of the UK's soulful electronic underground alongside SBTRKT and James Blake back in
2010, Sampha's worked at his craft with a quiet and assured confidence. Though he's steadily released a
string of precise and poignant singles over the past few years, the London artist has managed to fly just
under the radar, revelling in the creative freedom this lack of attention affords. Still just twenty seven
years old, he has lent his vocal, production and songwriting talents to a range of standout releases, from
UK contemporaries such as FKA twigs, Jessie Ware and SBTRKT to world-renowned superstars like Drake,
Kanye West and, most recently this year, on Frank Ocean’s "Endless" and Solange’s "A Seat At The Table"
albums. Now it’s time for Sampha to tell his own story and "Process", produced by Sampha himself and
Rodaidh McDonald, is set to be his defining musical statement. To paraphrase the previously mentioned
Yeezy, Sampha's kept all the best shit for himself here, topping those critically acclaimed songwriting
credits with a set of experimental soul and futurist R&B which explores grief with sincerity and
sensitivity. Overwhelmed by the loss of his mother to cancer, the London musician poured his heart into
the piano, raising his game to treat us to ten existential, poetic and occasional cryptic studies of the
human condition. In turns fragile, tense and terse, but always alive with pure melodic beauty, "Process"
is a stunning debut from a future superstar.

Within A Western Circular lies an exciting and varied crew of guest artists including MF DOOM, Samuel T.
Herring (Future Islands), Sudan Archives, and Laura Groves, all contributing vocals to his rich, dexterous
compositions. These collaborations are the by-product of several years of writing and producing.
Recently, he’s appeared extensively on the debut albums by Sudan Archives (writing the lead single,
'Confessions', no less) and Nilüfer Yanya (contributing seven songs), alongside work with Celeste, and
another writer and production credit on Jessie Ware’s Devotion.
An album that’s been in the works for the past half-decade, A Western Circular is a bold, reflective piece
that directly relates to Archer’s personal experiences of life and death, centered on one particular week
where they breathed with equal intensity. The record’s themes of greed, love and loyalty all relate back
to that specific time. Inspired by author John Fante, A Western Circular is a spiritual voyage through life’s
pushing and pulling: finding beauty in the rough, sadness in the bright. Ostensibly, it’s a poignant
reflection on the duality of the human condition.

On the record, Archer has uncovered new depths and forged an invigorating singular sound - supple and
multi-layered, honouring his acoustic heritage and influence, while building a sonic universe that
commands contemporary references to everything from Frank Zappa to Yasuaki Shimuzu, Robert Wyatt
to Arthur Russell.

The unassailable DJ Shadow finally returns to our humble shelves with an ambitious and exceptional
double album, "Our Pathetic Age", once again on Mass Appeal. "Our Pathetic Age" is the result of an
intensely creative period that found the hip-hop and electronic innovator delving further into original
composition and experimentation. The first half of Our Pathetic Age features 11 new instrumental works
that balance some of Shadow’s most menacing sounds with beams of hope, including his first fully
composed orchestral piece. Mindblowing swathes of synth heft surge to trap percussion, sci fi sequences
and distorted jukes, or else jazzy syncopation carries nebulous melodies into the upper atmosphere.

The second half of Our Pathetic Age is a full album of vocal collaborations, ranging from Run The Jewels,
Nas and Dave East to Sam Herring, Paul Banks and Wiki, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah and Raekwon.
Shadow notably reunites with his early Solesides collaborators Lateef The Truthseeker and Gift of Gab
(Blackalicious). It also features St. Louis MCs Rockwell Knuckles and Tef Poe, fellow Bay Area musicians
Fantastic Negrito and Jumbo is Dr.ama, and Brookyln MC Stro. Full track list with collaborators is below.

"More than anything, I try to get a sense of the mood of society as a whole. The subtle signals that
humans send each other, the way people behave, their frustrations and ebbs and flows. In my part of the
world, people are scared. There's rampant homelessness, and a real fear of falling into generational
poverty. People are addicted to, and addled by distraction; they're angry and confused, and disaffected
by their own governmental institutions. There's songs on the record that are inspired by this energy and
seek to harness it, to make sense of it. In some cases, there's attempts to salve the wound; in others, the
songs merely observe but don't offer solutions. I want the album to reflect the times we live in, a
signpost in the ground to mark the era...Our Pathetic Age." - DJ Shadow.

The album was produced by DJ Shadow, and the album art was created by Paul Insect, who also
designed Shadow’s The Mountain Will Fall and Outsider covers.

Sleaford Mods started out sometime during 2006 whilst Jason Williamson was living in Nottingham. Born
out of part frustration and part accident, it quickly found its feet as an aggressive verbal onslaught on all
that is contrived and connected to the day-to-day hammer of low paid employment and domestic
situations arising from that trap. After a year of working ideas out in both the studio and in live
performance around Nottingham, Williamson moved south and took the cause to London for a couple of
years, before returning to Nottingham in 2009. Soon after that he that he met Andrew Fearn and the
Sleaford Mods became a duo. Fearn’s first work was on the production of “Wank” – the Mods’ fifth CDr
album. Soon after he started stalking the studio and stage with Williamson. Just after the release of
“Wank” the duo were invited to play a three day festival curated by Nottingham’s Rammel Club. During
that weekend they were introduced to the Harbinger Sound label. A meeting which – a year later –
resulted in the release of “Austerity Dogs”. Numerous shows around the UK and Europe followed,
including further festival appearances. Rave reviews of the album have appeared in magazines as diverse
as The Wire and Uncut, along with interviews being published both on paper and on the internet, both
here and abroad. With more international dates on the horizon including excursions to Poland and
Sweden the interest in the Mods continues to spread.

Derided as one-hit wonders, estranged from their original producer and record label, and in self-imposed
exile in Los Angeles, the Beastie Boys were written off by most observers before even beginning to
record their second album - an embarrassing commercial flop that should have ruined the group's career.
But not only did 'Paul's Boutique' eventually transform the Beasties from a fratboy novelty to hip hop
giants, its sample-happy, retro aesthetic changed popular culture forever.

With the considerable help of Los Angeles-based production duo the Dust Brothers, the Beastie Boys
helped redefine what sampling could be with this record. Snatches of familiar music are scattered
throughout the record - anything from Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" and Sly Stone's "Loose Booty" to
Loggins & Messina's "Your Mama Don't Dance" and the Ramones' "Suzy Is a Headbanger" - but never
once are they presented in lazy, predictable ways. the Dust Brothers and Beasties weave a crazy-quilt of
samples, beats, loops, and tricks, which creates a hyper-surreal alternate reality, evolving into a wholly
unique record, unlike anything that came before or after. It very well could be that its density is what
alienated listeners and critics at the time; there is so much information in the music and words that it
can seem impenetrable at first, but upon repeated spins it opens up slowly, assuredly, revealing more
every listen. Musically, few hip-hop records have ever been so rich; it's not just the recontextulations of
familiar music via samples, it's the flow of each song and the album as a whole, culminating in the
widescreen suite that closes the record.

"Ill Communication" follows the blueprint of "Check Your Head", accentuating it at some points,
deepening it in others, but never expanding it beyond the boundaries of that record. It was the first
Beastie Boys album not to delve into new territory, but it's not fair to say that the band were coasting,
since much of the album finds the group turning in muscular, vigorous music that fills out the black-and-
white sketches that comprised "Check Your Head". Much of the credit has to go to the group's renewed
emphasis on their rhyming; there are still instrumentals, but the Beasties do push their words to the
forefront, even on dense rockers like the album's signature tune, "Sabotage". But even those rhymes
illustrate that the group is in the process of a great settling, relying more on old-school-styled rhyme
schemes and word battles than the narratives and surreal fantasies that marked the high points on their
first two albums. With this record, the Beasties confirm that there is indeed a signature Beastie Boys
aesthetic, with the group sticking to a blend of old school rap, pop culture, lo-fi funk, soulful jazz
instrumentals, Latin rhythms, and punk, often seamlessly integrated into a rolling, pan-cultural, multi-
cultural groove.

Sampa The Great creates a sense of home on her debut album - “The Return”. A characterful record, its
reference points range from classic hip-hop to ancient Southern African sounds. Built on four years of
personal and musical soul-searching, it’s an assured statement, the product of meaningful musical
connections and of Sampa having to redefine her self-identity away from the comforts of family and old
friends.

Building on her formative works, “The Return” sees Sampa tackle bigger questions, exploring what it
means to feel at home, to feel excluded, and to see someone as an outsider. It stems from the rift Sampa
has experienced in the rise of her career, where she’s celebrated as part of a new generation of
Australian musicians while at the same time still being seen as an other. The album artwork features
Sampa alongside a Nyau dancer - traditional dancers and figures that are found in villages across parts of
Africa. For Sampa, the dancer represents the fear of the unknown which is often projected by the West
when it comes to African traditions. She also wanted to rediscover her ancestors’ spirituality: her
mother’s side of the family are of the Bantu ethnicity from which the Nyau tradition originates.
The themes behind the album are addressed head on in title track ‘The Return’. At the close of the track,
Whosane’s lyrics refer to “returning to the self of my self”. This, for Sampa, is what she’s been trying to
do for the past six years: to find new ways of feeling at home and rediscover an emboldened idea of
herself. "Home is described in a lot of ways and means a lot of different things to different people,” she
says. “I had to redefine in my mind and in my spirit what home means.” The album is both a re-telling of
that journey, and the realisation of her aim; the album walks us through that return to home, while the
accomplished sound and lyricism underscores the steps she’s made as a person and artist.

Her African heritage is an important aspect of her exploration of home. On ‘OMG’, for instance, she talks
about celebrating the cultures and traditions of Africa:

“Daddy adolescent said he’d get out from the streets

Give him kid a feed

Let em grow they feet

Fly em out of Africa

Give them kids a beat

Show them how the other half

How the world lives”

Explaining the meaning behind the lyrics, she says, “I personally feel that people on the continent have a
duty to our family in the diaspora, to re-teach our culture, language, spirituality, ways and return our
peeps to ourselves. To me ‘OMG’ sounds like the songs we heard in our childhood. It’s broadly about
flexing your culture! Loving where you’re from and even being shocked at the realisation of not knowing
how dope it is to be ‘who you are’.” The video was shot between South Africa and Botswana, where she
was raised, and gave Sampa the chance to involve her parents in her world. “I got to do something that
I’ve never done before,” she says. “Which is to have my parents in one of my music videos. This is the
first time they have been involved in my music at this level and it was important for me to express
accepting and flexing my culture with the two people who know me most!”

On album opener, ‘Mwana’, she employs the language of the Bemba tribe which her mother is a
descendent of. “Mwana” means “child” in Bemba, and the song samples her mother and features her
sister singing, making connections between her immediate family and their wider history. However, “The
Return” is a reference to a physical journey, as well as a spiritual one; Sampa returned to Zambia and
Botswana, where she was born and raised, respectively. There, she recorded the videos for both ‘Final
Form’ - the triumphant single which sees her embrace the struggle of growing as an artist, and ‘OMG’.
She is also set to release a short film titled ‘Homecoming’ about her experiences returning home to play
her first shows on African soil. Across every aspect of “The Return”, from the music and the lyrics, to the
visuals and the artwork, Sampa The Great returns to the foundations propping up her sense of self and
in doing so makes a bold statement about who she is as an artist.

STAFF COMMENTS

Millie says: Sampa The Great’s masterful ‘The Return’ is the musical culmination of four years of self
discovery, a theme which runs throughout the entire album. Incorporating everything we love about hip-
hop as well as a celebration of Southern African rhythm, this album is pure and dynamic. Featuring some
badass artists like Whosane and Krown, this is the gift that just keeps on giving.

One year after De la Soul re-drew the map for alternative rap, fellow Native Tongues brothers A Tribe

People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm floated a few familiar hooks, but it wasn't a
sampladelic record. Rappers Q-Tip and Phife Dawg dropped a few clunky rhymes, but their lyrics were
packed with ideas, while their flow and interplay were among the most original in hip-hop. From the
beginning, Tribe focused on intelligent message tracks but rarely sounded over-serious about them.

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band return with another instantly classic 45 guaranteed to be all over DJs set
lists. With their sophomore full length coming in September, they treat us to another bomb of a two
sider. Side A is a cover of the Dr Dre hit “XXplosive” done up in proper BRSB fashion, smashing drums
and steel pans playing the lead and bass lines. They take this one into new territory by adding synth
parts and dubbed out horn lines playing Nate Dogg’s infamous vocal hook melodies. Side B takes on one
of NYCity’s grimiest Hip Hop club anthems, Mobb Deep’s “Burn”. We decided to do this tune and
demoed it out long before the unfortunate passing of Prodigy.

Unfortunately, he will never get to hear this cover, and that has been one of the nicest things in covering
some of these more current Hip Hop tunes. Rest In Peace P. BRSB manages to do it again…..a version
equally as raw and punchy as the original. Pans bang out the iconic riff from the original, theremin
ushers in the changes, and the low rubble of the synth bass is sure to crush the subwoofers.

BadBadNotGood is the talented young quartet of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass,
Alex Sowinski on drums & Leland Whitty on saxophone. They formed and became inseparable friends at
Humber College's Music Performance program in 2011 and have been on a critically acclaimed, rule
bending musical journey ever since. BBNG took the music world by storm with their 2014 LP, 'III', a brash
yet refined record of angular jazz improvisations, lush ballads, krautrock and futuristic hip-hop tinged
rhythms which led to a couple years of touring the world and collaborating with some of the best and
brightest artists around the globe.

The boys are back with the new album 'IV', their most impressive and highly anticipated project yet. IV
continues their forward thinking progression, sounding something like a jam session in space between
Can, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock's Headhunters, Weather Report, Arthur Russell and MF DOOM.

With tracks like "Time Moves Slow" featuring haunting vocals from Sam Herring of Future Islands, the
syncopated groove of "Lavender," a collaboration with Montreal based producer Kaytranada, the
rumbling fusion build of "Confessions Pt. II" featuring Colin Stetson on the bass sax, "Love" which is
highlighted with smokey left field raps from Mick Jenkins and the epic chords of "Speaking Gently", 'IV' is
an exploration in post-genre virtuosity.

STAFF COMMENTS

Wooah there! Let's start at the beginning then. One of many CLASSIC (and I really do mean that)
Chemical Brothers LPs to be reissued this week. I actually discovered "Exit Planet Dust" AFTER the
critically acclaimed, much lauded, "Dig Your Own Hole" (also in this week). Once "Dig..." had its clawed
its way into a young 14 year old's psyche, one had to feverishly acquire everything that was released by
these kings of breakbeat. I remember a CD shop in Aflecks selling me the CD of this record, originally
released in 1995 (I think I got mine in '98) along with a load of 'live', 'B-side' and 'unreleased' CD-rs
(cough cough). Anyway, they could do no wrong! This was their breathtaking debut - with a title hinting
at the historical law suit which meant Tom and Ed went from being called The Dust Brothers to the
Chemical Brothers. Meeting at Manchester university, the pair became synonymous with that late
nineties breakbeat sound - along with people like Utah Saints, Fatboy Slim, Midfield General and Freddy
Fresh. However, they also adapted and collaborated, with this record featuring the Charlatans' Tim
Burgess alongside the (then relatively unknown) Beth Orton - both of whom would work with the
dastardly duo again over their incredibly long and fruitful career. Although later veering into lots of
different styles, for me the first three albums, this along with "Dig Your Own Hole" and "Surrender" could
never be topped! Like Fatboy Slim's "Better Living Through Chemistry", or Leftfield's "Rhythm And
Stealth" - undeniably British and essential pieces of our rich dance music legacy. Every home needs one!

The third and last of the 'classic' Tribe records (preceding the addition of Jay Dee and the formation of
the Ummah production team), "Midnight Marauders" sees the group at their most musically
sophisticated, marrying the distinctive Tribe sound with groundbreaking sampling and adventurous
rhymes. The logical evolution of the bop-influenced hooks which characterized "Low End Theory",
"...Marauders" seemlessly balances jazz, soul and reggae influences with pure golden age hip hop,
graduating from a cool school aesthetic to an electric jazz sound (reminiscent of fusion-era Miles Davis).
Lyrically "Midnight Marauders" finds the group's abstract poetics in excellent form as usual, and Phife is
miles ahead of the 'mayor-flavor' rhymes of "Can I Kick It." As per the title, the album develops the
introspection of "After Hours" into a nocturnal feel which winds its way through "Midnight," the party-
rock of "We Can Get Down," "Clap Your Hands" and the complex layers of "God Lives Through." No
review of this LP would be complete without a moment in tribute to the majesty of the Ronnie Foster
sampling "Electric Relaxation", a flawless cut which sees Q-Tip and Phife Dawg trading killer bars with
effortless flow. All in all, a true classic from back in the day, which no home should be without.

Big Crown is proud to present this must have two-sider from El Michels Affair. The A side "Reasons" is a
collaboration that is sure to get all the Soul collectors very, very excited. Last time Bobby Oroza was in
New York El Michels invited him to the studio to cut a tune together. Bobby took this opportunity to take
us all on a journey to the existential side of his mind on this gorgeous and ethereal ballad covered in lush
guitar notes. Oroza's voice finds it's place perfectly over the track, talking us through the human struggle
and still creating that energy that is uniquely his and has become his signa- ture sound.

The B side "Hipps" is pulled from El Michels Affair's recently released modern masterpiece Adult
Themes. In a day and age when the album format is being taken over by singles and playlists Adult
Themes is a record that truly has to be listened to in the context of the whole album to be understood.
This made it hard for us to pick a tune from it for this 7". "Hipps" cuts in with a crushing drum beat and is
quickly joined by the unmistakable horn arrange- ments that Leon has become famous for. In true EMA
fashion the arrangement on this piece can't be touched, closing one's eyes and listening will induce
anyone to a vivid visual fantasy. It turns out to be something of a chapter from a book, and we
recommend you treat yourself to the front to back experience of Adult Themes.

“It Is What It Is” was produced by Flying Lotus and Thundercat and features musical contributions from
Ty Dolla $ign, Childish Gambino, Lil B, Kamasi Washington, Steve Lacy, Steve Arrington,
BADBADNOTGOOD, Louis Cole and Zack Fox. The album follows his game-changing third album “Drunk”
(2017). That record completed his transition from virtuoso bassist to bonafide star and cemented his
reputation as a unique voice that transcends genre. “This album is about love, loss, life and the ups and
downs that come with that,” Bruner says about “It Is What It Is”. “It’s a bit tongue-in-cheek, but at
different points in life you come across places that you don’t necessarily understand… some things just
aren’t meant to be understood.”

The unruly bounce of new single ‘Black Qualls’ is classic Thundercat, teaming up with Steve Lacy (The
Internet) and Funk icon Steve Arrington (Slave). It’s another example of Stephen Lee Bruner’s desire to
highlight the lineage of his music and pay his respects to the musicians who inspired him. Discovering
Arrington’s output in his late teens, Bruner says he fell in love with his music immediately: “The tone of
the bass, the way his stuff feels and moves, it resonated through my whole body.”

‘Black Qualls’ emerged from writing sessions with Lacy, whom Thundercat describes as “the physical
incarnate of the Ohio Players in one person - he genuinely is a funky ass dude”. It references what it
means to be a black American with a young mindset: “What it feels like to be in this position right now…
the weird ins and outs, we’re talking about those feelings… Part of me knew this [track] was where Steve
[Arrington] left us.”

Straight out the gate, Nas dropped a classic. Since the release of the seminal ‘Illmatic’ album in 1994,
critics and fans have been wondering if Nas peaked too early and if anything in his subsequent catalogue
could be held up against this masterpiece.

To be fair, it’s hard to follow up something this flawless, a project that allied his most insightful, pitch-
perfect heartfelt rhymes with the work of the best hiphop producers on the east coast.DJ Premier, Q-Tip
from A Tribe Called Quest and Large Professor all take their turns on the album, along with the unsung
L.E.S.,but it’s Pete Rock in his prime who provides the stunning backdrop for the cinematic ‘The World is
Yours’.

It’s a perfect nugget of a single, weaving in the brashness of Scarface, the repetition of a snatch of T La
Rock’s early Def Jam gem ‘It’s Yours’ and piano courtesy of Ahmad Jamal’s ‘I Love Music’ from his own
timeless ‘The Awakening’ album (1970).Presented for the first time on 7”, the vocals of the album
version and the instrumental on the flip provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy and compare the work
of two masters at the top of their game.

compilation LP, jam packed with musical magic from our top 20, as well as the gold medallists in the

Buckle up as we blast off into the sonic stratosphere with the ‘Piccadilly Records Compilation 2019’.

W.H. Lung get things off to a flying start with the existential motorik and art pop perfection of ‘Second
Death Of My Face’, a soaring combination of searing synthwork, sophisticated lyrics and propulsive
rhythm which segues perfectly into the psychedelic throb and shoegaze shimmer of Lorelle Meets The
Obsolete’s ‘Líneas En Hojas’. The tempo settles into a riverbank lilt for the haze of Vanishing Twin’s
summertime serenade ‘Magician’s Success’, before coasting through the orchestral beauty of Prefab
Sprout’s ‘Sleeping Rough’ and Shana Cleveland’s nuanced acid folk. Closing out the A-side perennial
Piccadilly favourites Moon Duo take an arp out of Apta’s book and walk us through the cosmos with the
optimistic space disco of ‘Stars Are The Light’.

The spaced out synth tones remain for B-side opener ‘101FM’, a stomping coming of age cut from fierce
MC Little Simz, who hands the baton to a lovelorn Cate Le Bon for her swooning ‘Daylight Matters’, a
songwriting masterclass if ever I’ve heard one. Our own modular maestro Apta enters the fray next,
working the filters for a beatific Balearic rework of Horsebeach’s ‘Trust’, before fellow knob-twiddler
Andrew Wasylyk picks a path between Air (French band) and Air (Japanese Ambient imprint) with the
evocative and pastoral beauty of ‘Journey To Inchcape’. Continuing the theme of cinematic and serene,
Portico Quartet tug at each one of our heartstrings with the immersive electro-acoustic nocturne
‘Gradient’, a perfect precursor to Ghia’s end of night anthem ‘You Won’t Sleep On My Pillow’, a stand out
track from the exceptional ‘Proper Sunburn’ compilation.

The classic debut from the Shaolin gang circa 1993 is one of the most important rap albums of all time,
wrestling the initiative back from the West Coast gangsta crews and G-funk sound and taking hip hop to
rawer, dirtier place altogether. The RZA's mix of kung fu movie samples and twisted soul loops gives a
unique backing to the en masse duelling of Method Man, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah,
Genius, Masta Killa et al. "Bring Back Da Ruckus" sets their stall out and things continue at a neck-
breaking pace through the graceful "Can It All Be So Simple", the complexity of "Da Mystery Of
Chessboxin'", threatening "Wu-Tang Clan Ain't Nuthing Ta F' Wit", the scarily prescient "CREAM", Meth's
evil signature theme, all the way through to "Protect Ya Neck" and "Tearz". Sheer brilliance.

Soul Jazz Records release this stunning new collection featuring music influential to the artist Keith
Haring.
The art of Keith Haring is today one of the most recognisable of any visual artists of his generation,
defining 1980s New York during an intense period when downtown artists and musicians collaborated
like never before. Haring’s musical inspiration took in the punk/dance downtown sounds of clubs like The
Mudd Club, underground disco at Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage, as well the early days of hip hop and
electro.

The album is released to coincide with the opening of the first major exhibition in the UK of Keith
Haring’s work at Tate Liverpool, which runs for the next six months.

Haring’s many friends included Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Madonna, Fab Five Freddy, William
Burroughs, Jenny Holzer, Yoko Ono, Grace Jones, Larry Levan, Futura 2000.

The music here includes the work of a number of Haring’s close friends, including Jean-Michel Basquiat,
Yoko Ono, Larry Levan, John Sex and George Condo (The Girls), as well as healthy dose of rare disco, early
electro and New York punk/dance tracks.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Where a lot of Soul Jazz compilations focus on a genre, or a precursor of that genre, Haring's
affiliated acts read like the toilet walls of CBGB, Paradise Garage and the Mudd Club. It's a brilliantly
varied but cohesive snapshot of the 80s in music and art incorporating art-rock, electro and the
burgeoning hip-hop scene. Absolutely essential.

Game-changing multi-instrumentalist Kamaal Williams has put together the latest DJ-Kicks mix. It
features four of his own brand new and exclusive tracks and hints at the wide world of influences that
have made him one of the most prominent artists of the last few years.

Williams has taken his long standing love of seventies jazz fusion and mixed it up with the contemporary
sound of the London underground to devastating effect. House, broken beat, grime, soul, funk, hip hop
and jazz all permeate his work, which has seen him evolve from one-man producer Henry Wu to
acclaimed live band Kamaal Williams, backed by talented drummers and bassists. His pioneering work in
the studio and live arena has influenced a whole new generation of like-minded musicians that have
helped make the capital one of the most musically exciting and quickly evolving cities in the world, with
Williams' own virtuoso drumming and percussion right at the heart of it all.

The exceptional Yussef Kamaal album 'Black Focus' was one of the most talked about records of 2016.
Vinyl pressings kept selling out, it received rave reviews, earned the band the Breakthrough Act award at
the 2017 Jazz FM awards and led to spellbinding live shows all over Europe. The follow up, The Return,
came on Williams' own new Black Focus label and took his band global, all while picking up nominations
for best independent album at the AIM Music Awards.
Improvised rhythm and spirituality are at the heart of everything Williams does, as is London life, with its
diverse people, cultures and musical customs all feeding into his work. That is also true when making
more electronic sounds as Henry Wu, who appears here after standout EPs on labels like Rhythm Section
International. Williams' music is so individual it is more than deserving of its own tag: the artist himself
calls it Wu Funk, and some of the many sounds that feed into it are all showcased on this adventurous
new mix.

Exclusives include a live take of 'Snitches Brew,' new Kamaal Williams tracks 'Shinjuku' and 'Strings ATL' ,
as well as 'Wivout U' from Henry Wu. Those vital highlights sit next to classic jams from Southern Freeze,
a strong contingent of London innovators from K15 to Dego and Tenderlonius to Kaidi Tatham, with funk
driven house from Peven Everett, raw stuff from Steve Julien, lush synth grooves from Lone and feel
good grooves from Phil Asher all making this is an honest and uplifting collection that, when necessary, is
happy to eschew blends, fades and mixing in favour of red hot selections and sequencing.

Kamaal Williams DJ-Kicks is a fascinating insight into the record collection of a true musical alchemist.

STAFF COMMENTS

Millie says: Take a dive into Kamaal Williams’ chosen tracks picked for DJ Kicks, a few brand-new
exclusives and a mixture of Jazz, Hip Hop, Broken Beat and all the good stuff including Steve Spacek,
Ratgrave and some Henry Wu gems in there too. Oooff!

DIG YOUR OWN HOLE - VINYL EDITION

FREESTYLE DUST / VIRGIN

Ok, onto the second release of the Chemical Brothers life changing discography and it was this one that
really set the world on fire. "Dig Your Own Hole" saw the pair hit the mainstream - mainly due to the
extensive licensing for advertising the album saw - forcing the pair to address the issue in interviews at
the time (underground dance music doesn't belong on adverts - said the critics...). But for the less elitist
this didn't bother us, it actually shone a light on this incredible act OUTSIDE of the club (remember, I was
only 13 years old at the time!) meaning a whole generation of teenagers suddenly started listening to
dance music and reading Ministry / Mixmag - even though we were too young to go to any of the clubs!
Such was the mystic power of the Chems. Tracks off this album need little introduction. "Block Rockin'
Beats" - you know that one. "Where Do I Begin" - saw the return of the fragile, Elf-like beauty that is Beth
Orton on vocals and became a comedown anthem of the times. "The Private Psychedelic Reel" showed
that they could do epic, festival pleasing songs - earning them regular appearance at Glastonbury and
the multitude of outdoor raves up and down the country. Then there's fuckin NOEL GALLAGHER (!!!) on
"Setting Sun" - instantly aligning the baggy, floppy haired duo with the massive, fledging Brit Pop scene.
The rest, as they say, is history - the Chems became a global act; they headlined the Pyramid Stage about
5 years on the trot, James Holroyd (Piccadilly customer and Bugged Out! resident) became their tour DJ,
again, cementing their credentials with the dance music aficionados of the day. Nine more albums were
to emanate from the pair, with countless remixes and singles to boot. But to me, the first trilogy of
albums, with "Surrender" following in 2001, where the absolute zenith for me, and iconic slices of UK
dance music heritage that should be displayed with pride at any instance. A classic.

BIG CROWN RECORDS

Ltd 7"

£8.99
Release date: Expected 12 Jun '20

Steel drum cover of Grace Jones. Steel drum cover of Erykah Badu. Third full length album coming in
2021. Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is back with another crushing two-sider that is guaranteed to set
dancefloors on fire and get heads nodding around the globe. The mysterious steel pan outfit hailing from
Hamburg, Germany has become a staple in DJ sets from Europe to Japan, from the US to Brasil, and
anywhere else these tunes have found their way to speakers. They have released a slew of classic 7”s
and two critically acclaimed full length albums. With that they have set a high bar for themselves, one
clearly they intend on pushing higher with this new offering.

Side A is BRSB’s take on Grace Jones’ nightclub classic “My Jamaican Guy”. They take the tune to a new
height from the first beat, laying down an infectious groove that will get people out of their seats
immediately. Heavy duty drums and bass shake the speakers through the intro then the pans reveal what
they are covering as they play the instantly recognizable top line of the original. Rhythm guitar, heavily
echoed percussion hits, and the different pan sets all combine to make this yet another instant classic
from Bacao. BRSB has received a lot of praise for their choices of covers. Occasionally reworking hits,
but, most notably pulling the album cut gems from artists typically more championed by the
underground. Well...here they go again, covering Erykah Badu’s homage to the late great J Dilla “The
Healer”. This is the type of thing to make Spice Adams jump on his kitchen counter and scream. From the
instant this comes on, necks will be snapping and faces will scrunch up as they take the original beat
produced by Madlib and give it a run for its money. Shaking subwoofers with the eerie tremolo bass they
replay E. Badu’s vocal melodies on the pans adding their own flourishes. Glockenspiel plays the
downbeat and a clap like thunder keeps the two-step swaying, all coming together to make this another
must have two-sider from Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band.

Six years after "Hello Nasty", an older, wiser and entirely essential Beastie Boys re-emerged with "To The

irrepressible tag team rhymes, mixing up celebrations of their home city with witty put downs of George
W and his policies, and of course their usual stoopid bragging, but this time dropping them over stripped
down backing tracks, that give a nod to the past (check "Triple Trouble" with its Sugarhill Gang samples),
while obviously being influenced by hip hop and R'n'B's more recent electronic styles. Four singles were
released from the album, "Ch-Check It Out", "Triple Trouble", "An Open Letter to NYC", and "Right Right

This is the band’s first new music since last year’s top 15 album “English Tapas” The EP was recorded in

band are confirmed to play two nights at London’s Roundhouse on September 21st & 22nd 2018 and
also their biggest hometown show at Nottingham’s Concert Hall on September 30th. They also play their
biggest Paris show too at Le Triannon on 26th Sept, some Scottish dates in November with shows in
Copenhagen and Amsterdam planned for November too.

The band are currently in the studio in Nottingham working on tracks for a new album planned for
March 2019.

Jason Williamson says about the new songs “the lead tracks are mostly full of violent tendencies that
only transpire through imagination. People are powerless under the political monster and the intense
anger and frustration morphs into illusions of attacking each other through the bravado of social media,
depression and paranoia.”

Instrumental version of the amazing "Bandana" album from 2019. You know the score by now... Madlib's
beats are just sooo juicy and nice, he normally releases them separately to the artist's vocal album.

Such was the case with "Pinata" and now "Bandana", the unofficial follow-up, continues the trend. One
of hip-hop's most respected beat makers shows no signs of losing his edge in his forties - he's still one of
the best in the business!

Unlike "Pinata"'s glamourising, flamboyant celebration of the drug game (albeit with some rather cutting
lyrics), "Bandana"'s beats highlight the claustrophobic, tense and unbridled darkness that also comes
with it. Smothered in a foreboding, dready weight, the perfect canvas for Gibbs' black hearted lyrics.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Madlib's killer beats always deserve a seperate album to themselves and no more so is this
apparant than the claustophobic and edgy tension of "Bandana".

Not a conventional album by any means, Dilla's "Donuts" is a collection of numerous short productions
that he kept to himself rather than use on his work with Madlib, Q-Tip, Common and Slum Village. Like a
private DJ mixtape, they clock in on average at around nintey seconds, yet this is not merely a beats
compilation, but mini sample-manipulations glommed from other funk, soul, disco, rap and rock sources.
With awfully coincidental timing, Dilla passed away the week that the album was released, having been
suffering from an incurable blood disorder. A fitting epitaph to a unique talent.

£9.99

Tom Misch announces the release of his highly anticipated debut album ‘Geography’ via his own label
Beyond The Groove / Kobalt Music Recordings for an April 6th release. The first track to be lifted from
the album is ‘Movie’, a melodic ode to romance written by Tom and his long term collaborator Carmody,
and featuring guest vocals at the start by Tom’s sister Polly Misch The track displays a different side to
Tom’s music as his calming voice lulls the listener into a daydream, giving us a taster of what is to come
with the release of ‘Geography’.

The idea for the track came to fruiti on with Tom wanti ng to base the song around old classic movies
and the charm that came with them. The upcoming visual for ‘Movie’ is a culminati on of old footage
from Tom’s grandparents in Germany in the 40’s adding a personal narrati ve for Tom and his music. The
artwork was created by Tom’s mother Carol who has consistently contributed to visuals for his previous
releases. The silhouettes of Tom facing himself represent challenging himself to create a new landscape
in his diff erent moods and stages of creativity. Woven in with ideas of contour lines and illusion we see
one thing, then another, in the same way that music has its own multi layered language.

"Kindness returns with their third full length album titled “Something Like A War”. The album is a
culmination of years spent collaborating with the likes of Robyn, Jazmine Sullivan, Seinabo Sey and
Cosima among many others. Produced entirely by Bainbridge, the record is a collection of works
representing a period of reflection and transformation over the course of 4 years following their second
record “Otherness.” Now based in London, the album was recorded in several locations, while Kindness
was primarily based in New York during the writing and recording of the album. "

Kindness, who uses they/them pronouns, has remained busy since Otherness, working across several
projects: they co-produced five tracks on Solange’s album A Seat at the Table, and contributed
production, writing, and vocals to Blood Orange’s Freetown Sound and Negro Swan albums in addition to
production on Robyn's latest album Honey. A sought-after DJ, radio host, writer, collaborator, and
lecturer on everything from musical craft and heritage to queerness and history, they’ve spent the last
several years performing as a DJ at venues across the world, from Palais de Tokyo to the Guggenheim
Museum, hosted their own radio show on Red Bull Radio in 2016 and 2017, lectured at the Boiler Room

Recognise Me (I’m An African)

“The Next Chapter/Recognise Me (I’m An African)” marks the return of the godfather of British hip-hop,
Rodney P aka The Riddim Killa, with his first solo release in over a decade. Out on Tru Thoughts, the
white promo 7” represents the Rodney P of today. The two killer tracks embody and personify the
evolving music and culture of his heritage while paying homage to his contribution to the UK hip-hop
canon. “The Next Chapter” is both personal and cultural. It’s a reintroduction to the hugely influential
legend while laying out the next chapter in his respected career. “Recognise Me (I’m An African)” sees
Rodney reconnect on a deeper level with his West-Indian heritage as a second-generation immigrant.
Referencing Ghanaian politician and revolutionary Kwame Nkrumah, Rodney explores themes of identity
and the ideology of pan-Africanism (the idea that the destiny of all people of African descent, depends
on the fate of the continent of Africa). A pioneer who inspired a generation of hip-hop and grime MCs
with his homegrown reggae-influenced flow, Rodney P set the scene ablaze back in the late ‘80s with the
seminal group London Posse. Since then, he has had a rich and varied career as a radio and television
personality, while musically collaborating with the likes of Bjork, Skinnyman, Omar, MJ Cole and
countless others.

Breaks & Beats third release gets a timely repress for 2019, hitting us with another pair of phat funk cuts
featuring a lethal breakbeat. On the A-side we get the mellow and melodic funk of Juice's 1976 hit
"Catch A Groove", dripping in party in the studio cool and jazzy instrumental licks. If you still need
convincing of the quality of this cut, be aware that it's been flipped to fine effect by Beastie Boys, Public
Enemy, Nas, EPMD, Run DMC and Ultramagnetic MCs along with about another 170 cats! We stay in
1976 for the B-side, Fuzzy Haskins' slick and super funky "The Fuz And Da Boog", a serious instrumental
jam the Detroit musician dropped just before leaving Parliament Funkadelic in pursuit of solo glory. Since
this jam starts with a fierce open drum break, and club producers are well known for their low attention
span, it became an integral element of the 90s dancefloor, powering hits from Fatboy Slim (Everybody
Needs A 303), The Prodigy (Diesel Power), Future Sound Of London (Papua New Guinea) and Aphex Twin
(54 Cymru Beats).

DUSTY DONUTS

Mary Jane (Jim SHarp Buddah Mix)

Risin’ To The Top (Jim Sharp Edit)

The Dusty Donuts crew are back at it again, and if ten releases weren’t enough, the eleventh, which
features Jim Sharp is what we love to refer to as a certified banger. You see, this crew is deep with the
digging knowledge, DJ experience, and the production skills to reinterpret classics for not just disc jocks
but for the mainstream public to get up off of their seats and jam. Number eleven features two very
prominent tracks, “Rising To The Top”, an eighties classic from Keni Burke blunted out to the max, as well
as an edit of Rick James’“Mary Jane”with enough buddah funk in your trunk to get it moving. “Rising To
The Top”in its original form is a feel good, get up out of your seat joint that makes you wake up your
body and move it around. The bass line/ drums in this mix are so infectious, so damn good that if people
can’t move to this relick, you might have to keep a doctor on hand to check pulses. Sharp’s edit of “Mary
Jane”, one of the best tracks dedicated to weed in the history of weed songs, is completely on point. Like
MJ, it’s not the type of track you can just tie, down, it likes to spread its love around.

STAFF COMMENTS

Millie says: The eleventh instalment of Dusty Donuts doesn’t disappoint, full on funk classic with this Jim
Sharp remix. You won’t wanna take this off the turntable!

Released in September 2008, "Everything Is Borrowed" became the bands fourth consecutive Top 10
album. The Title was described by Mike Skinner as 'all about peaceful, positive vibes' and in the six years
from when "Original Pirate Material" was released, The Streets and Skinner undoubtedly became the
voice of a generation. Now reissued on heavyweight vinyl, it completes the series of essential Streets
album reissues.

The album formed a prominent part of the band's 2018 and 2019 Greatest Hits Tour. "The Escapist", the
first single from the album, become an instant classic when it originally dropped as a free download to
an unexpecting audience ahead of the album release. It was the first new music from the band for over
two years and has stood the test of time and is one of the most eagerly anticipated tracks of the recent
live shows. Likewise, the albums other two singles, "Everything Is Borrowed" and "Heaven For the
Weather", have also become a bedrocks of the tour.

Two years on from the release of his Mercury nominated debut, ‘Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam’,
Ghostpoet announces his sophomore album ‘Some Say I So I Say Light’ which will be released through
Play It Again Sam.

Two years on from his debut being nominated for the Mercury Prize, and having moved on from
Brownswood to Play It Again Sam, Ghostpoet’s creativity has blossomed even more. On his second
album, ‘Some Say I So I Say Light’, he pushes even further in all directions than on ‘Peanut Butter Blues...’,
mixing the abstract and the concrete with uncanny skill. Industrial beats, sonorous piano lines and hyper-
detailed ornamentation provide a backdrop for an artist who sounds ever more like a man old before his
time.

Ghostpoet attributes the album’s experimental bent to the change in his recording situation. Whereas
‘Peanut Butter Blues’ was entirely self-produced on a computer in Ghostpoet’s bedroom, ‘Some Say I So I
Say Light’ is a studio-based work co-produced with the talented Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Darkstar,
Egyptian Hip-Hop).

One of the key upbeat cuts is the album opener, ‘Cold Win’. Originally intended as an homage to old
school garage, it morphed into an electronic oddity that builds up gradually with cinematic swells of
horns, although skipping, staccato beats remain as a hint to the track’s origins. On ‘Dial Tones’ one will
recognize the wonderfully guarded and delicate vocals of UK songstress Lucy Rose. ‘Dorsal Morsel’,
which features Gwilym Gold on vocals, begins as a sparse, minimal meditation that develops into what
Ghostpoet calls a ‘synth utopia’, while lyrics about spending too much money on Amazon and Pringle
packet metaphors keep it grounded in reality. The delicacy of ‘Comatose’ winds up as glorious, string-led
chamber music.

Elsewhere, ‘Plastic Bag Brain’, which features Tony Allen on drums and Dave Okumu from The Invisible
on guitar fuses Afro Beat guitar riffs and shuffling Two Tone rhythms. You also have the legendary
drumming talent of Charles Hayward from This Heat lending his talent on ‘Sloth Trot’.

The disarmingly honest ‘Meltdown’ tells the tale of one of those break-ups where both parties simply
drift apart gradually. Electronic static, radio signals and beats that crunch like footsteps through snow
form the basis for Ghostpoet’s ruminations on dim sum and noodles on ‘MSI musmiD’, while ‘12 Deaf’ is
an aqueous, abstract soundscape.

It’s an album that positions Ghostpoet in the tradition of modern British auteurs as interested in pushing
the boundaries sonically as expressing cathartic feelings.

Back in the nineties, southern states such as Memphis, Tennessee were also hotbeds for the fast evolving
musical phenomenon. As we push on into the second millennium; from the swathes of short-run, tape-

JOYFUL NOISE

Coloured LP 2

£19.99

CD

£10.99

Yoni Wolf has spent the last two decades traveling the remote sonic terrain where underground hip hop,
avant-pop, and psych-rock meet. On AOKOHIO, Yoni Wolf condenses the essential elements of WHY? into
a stunningly potent musical vision. Co-produced by Wolf and his brother Josiah, the record presents a
rich palette of musical voices that emerge and disappear into a constantly shifting kaleidoscope of
sound. And while AOKOHIO features many notable guest contributors, from Lala Lala's Lillie West, to Nick
Sanborn and Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso, the listener's attention remains squarely directed on Yoni's
voice and vision. AOKOHIO finds Yoni rethinking fundamental aspects of his approach to creating and
delivering his music. The album is presented as six movements comprised of two to four songs each,
with some segments appearing as brief fragments that dissolve within seconds.

The concept of sharing AOKOHIO in segments over time has been preserved with the release of an
accompanying visual album-with the first three segments directed by Sundance award-winner Miles
Joris-Peyrafitte, who is also the mastermind of the overarching video project. AOKOHIO feels like a
consequential addition to the WHY? catalog, possibly even an artistic turning point. But its creator
remains circumspect when asked to comment on the album's significance within his discography, instead
preferring to characterize the work as the latest iteration of his deep commitment to his artistic practice.
"I have no idea if this record is good or not," Yoni says. "But I never really know. I know that I've never
written a song that's indispensable to the American songbook. But in terms of what it is, it's a piece of
art. I put blood, sweat, and tears into this album, and struggled through the creative process as I always
do. As far as where this sits with the rest of my albums? I can't answer that. I just know that my career is
a lifelong career, and I'm working it. Every time it feels right, it makes me feel good."

Sermonizing Black Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and the benefits of a healthy and just lifestyle during the
height of the Bad Boy / Roc-AFella era of nihilistic excess in the late ‘90s, Dead Prez also signed to a
major label (Loud / Columbia) despite leaning much more towards the burgeoning indie aesthetics of the
day. But this was a good thing – using major label muscle to wake up righteous hip-hop fans who might
have fallen asleep at the wheel. The group itself – consisting of MCs stic.man and M-1, who produced or
co-produced most of the duo’s music – was formed in Tallahassee, Florida in the early 1990s. By later
that decade, the duo had started making significant waves, having their music heard on the soundtracks
to “Soul In The Hole” and “Slam,” as well as appearing on albums by Big Pun and The Beatnuts. By 1998,
they released their first official single, the serious, stark “Police State,” on Loud, appropriately brought to
the label by Lord Jamar of Brand Nubian.

After building a solid rep over the next two years with fiery live performances, in 2000 they unleashed
their debut album, Let’s Get Free. The album was a welcome return to provocative and often radically
political rhetoric that hearkened back to hip-hop forebears including The Coup, Public Enemy and KRS-
One (as well as poetic descendants like the Last Poets and Watts Prophets). Let’s Get Free was critically
acclaimed and benefited from multiple singles, including the infectious, thick analog drive of “Hip-Hop”
“It’s Bigger Than Hip-Hop,” with a remix co-produced by a young Kanye West; “Mind Sex” (with Abiodun
Oyewole of the Last Poets); and the poignant “I’m An African.”

But the singles weren’t the only worthy songs, as just about every cut here has deeper meaning than
most full albums by their early 2000s peers. Highlights: the thought-provoking, anti-drug album opener
“Wolves”; “We Want Freedom” “They Schools” and “Propaganda” . All in all, this is one of the more
underrated and possibly Top 5 fully-realized political hip-hop albums of all time.

'Picture London, thirty years ago, as Neneh Cherry gears up to release her debut album Raw Like Sushi -
a thrumming, restless, vibrant city that in 1989, much like today, pulsed defiantly against a backdrop of
increasing political doom, rocking to the joyful noise of culture leaping across boundaries, radically
reordering itself. Rents are low. Soho hums to the chatter of poets, vagabonds and petty sex tourists
drinking in the same elixir of possibility. The divisions between the queens of Old Compton and mods
and punks of Carnaby Streets look huge but feel slight. A spirit of multiracial unity permeates the air.
New York hip hop and Chicago house continue their euphoric colonisation of nightclub culture. Amid this
maelstrom, Neneh Cherry emerges, capturing the entire, giddy rumble of this rolling community street
culture in one record, Raw Like Sushi. With no interest in genre, Raw Like Sushi upsets and inverts
everything you thought you knew about how pop can work, at its brightest and most effective. One of
the greatest debut albums of all time, born halfway between Never Mind The Bollocks and Boy In Da
Corner, Raw Like Sushi was ready to escort you right to the centre of its dancefloor, dripping hot sweat
under a mirrorball at 3am - and its particular magic remains just as potent today.

Since the release of Raw Like Sushi 30 years ago, Neneh Cherry has continued to define and redefine
culture, style and music releasing five studio albums, including 2018’s Broken Politics, produced by Four

It's safe to say that hip-hop has never seen an album like Ol’ Dirty Bastard's 1995 solo debut 'Return to
the 36 Chambers'. The brief glimpses of ODB's unhinged genius provided by Wu-Tang Clan's landmark
Enter the Wu-Tang album two years earlier were begging to be expanded on to a larger canvas, and, with
RZA guiding production, the album promised to give Dirty the creative license to make one of the most
bizarre, entertaining and original LPs in hip-hop history. With his raspy, drunken flow and dark sense of
humor, Dirty fearlessly attacks from all angles, throwing himself fearlessly into punchy rhyme attacks
(“Damage,” with GZA), drugged-out party jams (the monster singles “Brooklyn Zoo” and “Shimmy
Shimmy Ya”) and bizarre, grimly hilarious fantasies of sex and violence (“Don't U Know” and the R&B-
tinged “Sweet Sugar Pie”). Backed by RZA's appropriately gritty, dissonant beats and appearances from
the Clan, Return became an instant hit, selling over 1 million copies and earning a Grammy Award

In the ten years since Danny Brown’s magnum opus XXX was released, he has permeated both
underground and mainstream music culture with an authentic and ever-evolving persona and a sound
wholly his own, transcending genres and any parameters the world around him might impose. He set the
blueprint for many of today’s critical darlings and opened doors for so many following his personally
audacious start. Today, Brown announces his long awaited and much anticipated return with his fifth
studio album uknowhatimsayin¿, slated for a physical release on November 8th via WARP. Executive
production is from the iconic rapper and producer Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. Q-Tip’s involvement in
uknowhatimsayin¿ marks the first time the legendary artist has executive produced an album since
Mobb Deep’s The Infamous. Brown’s lyrics balance earnest storytelling with laugh-out-loud one-liners,
especially apparent on “Dirty Laundry” as Danny raps about his sexual exploits and reminisces on his
rocky path to stardom. Brown’s star turn as an artist and individual are both clearly demonstrated on
uknowhatimsayin¿, the next stop on Brown’s journey and one that solidifies his reputation as an
innovator and hip-hop’s favorite curiosity. In the truest sense, it is a modern classic that defies genre and
reimagines what a hip-hop album can and should be in 2019.

Tenesha the Wordsmith, who came to the fore on On The Corner’s 2018 release ‘Black Noise 2084’, has
delivered a hard-cutting, gut-wrenching, and extremely moving spoken word album produced by Khalab
that brings together different lines of black music – folkloric, jazz, and electronic dance – into an afro-
futurist narrative with thunderous results. ‘Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts’, set for release on 30
August, lays bare difficult truths and projects the stories of hidden voices, with a warm and heartfelt
delivery that envelops the soul.

The poems are dedicated to the intersection, the places where we contemplate identity, culture, trauma
and love. ‘Peacocks & Other Savage Beasts’ is a place where they all meet. “I hope between these lines
you find healing,” says Tenesha. “I hope your compassion for others grows. I hope you will make the
decision you were afraid to make. I hope you will learn how to turn pain into power and purpose. Decide
which type of beast you want to be and if you can’t make up your mind, watch the women…”

Originally from Oakland, California, “a place where revolutionaries are born,” Tenesha the Wordsmith
originally began to fuse hip hop and poetry while living in Albany, New York, where she created her first
collection ‘Body Of Work’. Her early influences have returned with features from beatboxers and
vocalists that give the album a distinctly urban hip hop vibe.

STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: After a standout contribution to Khalab’s ‘Black Noise 2084’ LP last year, Tenesha teams up
with the producer once again, delivering poetic, polemic and emphatic spoken word over an array of

De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest may have been more commercially successful, but the afrocentric,
jazz political rap movement and unfadeable Native Tounge Massive started with the Jungle Brothers.
Their debut full length “Straight Out the Jungle” opened up many doors that are walked through by
artists like Mos Def, Common and even Kanye West. Their taste for jazzy horn samples helped kick-start
the entire jazz-rap movement, and their James Brown fixation was oneof the first. Plus, the group’s
groundbreaking collaboration with legendary house producer Todd Terry, “I’ll House You,” paved the way
for numerous hip-house hybrids that shot up the dance and pop charts over the next few years and
appeared to be a staple on every East Coast Rap Album from ‘88 until ‘92. The opening track “Straight
Out the Jungle” samples the classic Bill Withers drum break as the JB’s tell you where they are coming
from. “Black Is Black” (featuring a young Q-Tip) and “Sounds Of The Safari” introduces the pro-black
edge, while the sexually subtle classics “Jimbrowski” and “I’m Gonna Do You” are funny, clever and
timely. Hard, smart, fun, clever and brilliant, Mike G., Africa Baby Bam and Sammy G may not have
realized it but they crafted a classic rap album that stands the test of time. Available here on high grade,
loud pressed, double vinyl!

BIG CROWN

Coloured LP

Release date: Expected 12 Jun '20

CD

£10.99

Big Crown Records is proud to present Adult Themes, the latest full length offering from El Michels Affair.
This album takes the band’s “Cinematic Soul” aesthetic literally and sends the listener on a journey
through a whirlwind of moods and energies. With their 2005 debut album Sounding Out The City, EMA
spearheaded an instrumental funk / soul movement that inspired a slew of bands and even lead to the
creation of a few independent record labels. El Michels has since lent his signature sound to artists from
Adele to Dr John, Lana Del Rey to Aloe Blacc, and a who’s who list of others. In 2016 he co-founded Big
Crown Records and has since produced the lion’s share of its output. A short stint as the touring band for
Wu Tang Clan in 2007 led to the cult classics Enter The 37th Chamber (2009) and Return To The 37th
Chamber (2017). Adult Themes marks the long awaited, highly anticipated return to an album of original
compositions from El Michels Affair.

In 2017 in between producing, playing, and recording on other artists’ records Leon Michels began
creating compilations of short interludes intended to be sampled by hip hop producers. Some of these
wound up becoming songs by Jay Z & Beyonce, Travis Scott, and Don Toliver. These minute-long snippets
were inspired by the dense moody work of ‘60s composers like David Axelrod, and Francois de Roubaix,
as well as Moondog’s brand of classical jazz. Michels was having so much fun creating these instrumental
/ orchestral nuggets that he decided to expand on some of the ideas and create what would become the
soundtrack for a movie that has yet to be made, an imaginary film entitled “Adult Themes.” The album
plays like the colors on an artists pallet. Songs like “Rubix” and “Villa” are densely orchestrated with the
hard-hitting drums that El Michels Affair is known for. On “Life of Pablo”, Leon’s son makes his first
appearance on record and intros a song with an epic arrangement and a moving mood. “Hipps” is a
drum heavy ballad that could’ve easily fit on EMA’s debut record, Sounding Out the City. Other
compositions like “The Difference” and “Kill The Lights” are bare, melodic mood pieces with sparse
drums and sophisticated chord movement. All of these tunes come together to make perfect
backgrounds for dialogue and action. One of the beautiful things about instrumental music is that the
listener can decide what the narrative is. With Adult Themes El Michels Affair has created a “choose your
own adventure” in musical form.

Sleaford Mods are one of the most important, politically charged and thought-provoking duos currently
making their mark on the UK music scene and beyond. They are now poised to release their fifth studio
album entitled ‘Eton Alive’ in February 2019. The album, which features 12 new tracks from the prolific
artists, was recorded in Nottingham. The record will be the first release on Jason and Andrew’s newly
formed label ‘Extreme Eating’ and their first album since parting ways with Rough Trade Records.

“Eton Alive speaks for itself really. Here we are once again in the middle of another elitist plan being
digested slowly as we wait to be turned into faeces once more. Some already are, some are dead and
the rest of us erode in the belly of prehistoric ideology which depending on our abilities and willingness,
assigns to each of us varying levels of comfort that range from horrible to reasonably acceptable, based
on contribution. So after the digestive system of the Nobles rejects our inedible bones we exit the Arse
of Rule, we fall into the toilet again and at the mercy of whatever policies are holding order in the shit
pipe of this tatty civilisation. It is here our flesh regenerates as we rattle into another form, ready, and
ripe for order”. – Jason Williamson.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: The Mods return once again for another politically charged slice of snarling vocal fire and wry
social commentary. This time we get a more momentous charge towards post-punk minimalism, drum
machines and distorted bass taking a back seat to the increasingly effective two-part baying of
Williamson & Fearn.

South London singer and songwriter Greentea Peng releases her new release, "Rising", following 2018’s
acclaimed debut EP "Sensi" and the simmering viral hit "Downers", released in summer 2019. Featuring
the blissful, Earbuds-produced "Mr Sun (miss da sun)" that sets the tone for a bright, bold EP which
weaves a myriad of genres, all anchored by a mesmerising old-soul vocal. On the clattering title track
"Risin'", Peng announces 'woke up today, brand new morning' over an insistent, handclap- supported
beat, before adopting a half-spoken wordflow. Elsewhere, over the densely layered hip hop beat of
"Sane", she sings a low-slung, effortless hook: 'come make me feel sane, baby.'
Greentea Peng is dark and light, half soul-searcher and half wise-cracker. In a constant explorative state,
she is honest and frank, her inner battles channelled through the rhythms and flows of her music. Her
energy beams bright whether she’s touching on darker matters or happier moments. Visually Peng is a
living, breathing piece of art - effortlessly cutting the figure of a true British original. So much so,
Vivienne Westwood street cast her for her recent ‘Youth Is Revolting’ cover of Dazed.

project, recorded in Brooklyn, marks the start of a new chapter for James, who continues to push past

catalogue with the exploration and reinterpretation of classic rock and soul.

Williams, Kris Bowers, Solomon Dorsey and Richard Spaven lay the foundation for James’ journey

icons in rock and R&B, including Jimi Hendrix and Al Green. Venturing into new territory with the same
cool he applies to the jazz standard, José James breathes new life into all of the material he touches. He

Offering a modern take on classic soul and R&B, the album strikes a beautiful balance of cutting edge,
contemporary production, soulful expression, melancholic introspection and vibrant, candy coated
melody. An accomplished singer / songwriter with a stunning range, her prowess and versatility are a
force not to be reckoned with. As powerful and mesmerising on stage as she is in the studio, Fatima
possesses a talent heard all to rarely in todays musical climate.

STAFF COMMENTS

David says: Produced by a stellar cast including Theo Parrish and Floating Points, Fatima's 'Yellow
Memories' is a SOUL album in the truest sense of the word, a much needed reminder that, in song
writing, what you choose to leave out is as, if not more, important than what you put in. Offering a
modern take on the classic nu soul of Erykah Badu and D'Angelo, the album strikes a beautiful balance
between cutting edge, contemporary production and melancholic introspection: All of which is realised
perfectly on the record's best track "Do Better" featuring the horn section of Floating Points Ensemble
replaying 100% Pure Poison's soul bomb "Puppet On A String". So, if your idea of soul is a basement, a
red light and a feeling then brother (or sister!), this is the album for you. Just remember to check that

MELLO MUSIC

LP

£17.99

Quelle Chris has recorded with plenty of producers but his bond with Chris Keys extends beyond music.
After linking through mutual collaborator Roc Marciano, the two Chris’ became fast friends. About four
years worth of hang-out sessions, bong hits, video games and take-out food culminated in 2Dirt4TV3:
Innocent Country, a deceptively subtle character study of self disguised as an excellent piece of stoner
headnod hip-hop.

Throughout the 33 minutes that comprise Innocent Country, our two protagonists are in synch like a pair
of Jaeger pilots. Though the LP certainly has instances of energy and aggression, “Madness In The Oasis”
and “Where The Wild Things Roam” are two, more often than not it lives within introspective mid-tempo
moments like the languid “Nothing Moves.” Quelle is the wayward MC waxing bittersweet on the
reflective “Well Running Deep,” filling Chris Keys’ sweeping string samples with palpable nostalgia. Our
peregrine rapper is the lowkey consummate artist, powerful enough to give a rousing performance on
the moving “I Asked God,” then turn on a dime and nail the hilarious and self-effacing “Drugfest
TooThousandToo.”

Upon repeated listens, one might see that Innocent Country speaks to the blissful naivete of youth. It’s
the soundtrack to self-medication as an escape from reality, but it doesn’t jump ship before the
inevitable moment of clarity. Innocent Country is a party, but it’s also the morning after and the day
before. A sweet experience on the surface, this is therapy billed as reefer night at your man’s spot.

storytelling, and informed opinions – attributes that have set her apart from her peers and seen her
become one of the UK’s most-loved female-breakthrough stars of recent years. A sonic masterclass, ‘Lost

During the past decade, the Chicago-based multiinstrumentalist and producer, NNAMDÏ, has quietly
become one of the most prolific musicians of the modern era. Whether under his own name or one of
the many bands he’s spent time in, either as a full-on member or merely a touring partner, there’s been
an endless stream of music that NNAMDÏ has had his hands in. Pair that with the fact he co-owns his
label, Sooper Records (KAINA, Sen Morimoto), and it’d be easy to wonder how he finds time to do
anything other than make music.

On BRAT, the follow-up to 2017’s critically acclaimed DROOL, NNAMDÏ removes the veil to show just how
much effort and energy it takes to work at such a high level without any breaks. That process of finding a
balance between NNAMDÏ the performer and Nnamdi Ogbonnaya the person is what fuels BRAT, an
introspective record that’s still as dexterous and exciting as anything that’s come before, but is intimate
and hushed, commanding a listener’s full attention from the very start. Like all things he’s done before,
BRAT proves that genre classifications don’t really work here. BRAT is part hip-hop, part indie-rock, part
gospel, and part West African music, and in NNAMDÏ’s hands, these seemingly disparate pieces fit
together snuggly, as if there was never a question of their compatibility. NNAMDÏ wrote, performed, and
recorded BRAT by himself.

"On I Think I'm Good", the second full-length from Seattle-raised, Brooklyn-based drummer and
composer, Kassa Overall, the fast-rising musician masterfully dissolves the barriers between hip hop and
jazz music. Taking cues from Karriem Riggins, Madlib and Flying Lotus, Overall matches jazz improvisation
with beatmaker ingenuity. He’s ambitious as much as he is accomplished, dicing with serious subject
matter as he leaps between the record’s soulful, kaleidoscope trip of ideas. The record features a cadre
of New York’s brightest up and comers, including Joel Ross and Morgan Guerin, as well as some of its big
hitters, such as Brandee Younger and Theo Croker. It even features an especially recorded cameo from
legendary activist and author Dr. Angela Davis.

It’s an album that speaks to the contemporary state of America. Overall wrestles with the abhorrent
American prison system, the ebbs and flows of romantic relationships, and his experiences of grappling
with mental health and hospitalisation. I Think I'm Good conveys a singular feeling of intimacy, a
byproduct of Overall’s indie hustle and uncanny at-home and on-the-fly production methods. It’s the
perfect vehicle for Overall’s delicate meditations, weighing up emotions of despair, but never drowning
out the feeling of a fragile but vital hope.

Rush-released due to Internet leakage, Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly arrives in double quick
time.
With Lamar's previous album, 'Good Kid M.A.A.d City', lauded as one of this fledgling Century's best, the
level of expectation on its follow up was sky-high. How do you proceed after such a triple A-rated
straight-up hip hop smash? Get afflicted by the (P)funk, that's how. Channelling the psychedelic stew of
Parliament / Funkadelic, 'To Pimp A Butterfly' positions Lamar along the higher branches of rap's genre-
busting evolution (see also The Roots’ 'Phrenology', Common’s 'Electric Circus', Q-Tip’s 'Kamaal the
Abstract', André 3000’s 'The Love Below'). The expansive scope of Lamar's vision also runs to a live studio
band featuring Robert Glasper, Flying Lotus' fretless bass maestro Thundercat and producer /sax player
Terrace Martin, who add free jazz backing, pulling the music in another direction.

Lyrically the album walks in the footsteps of the socio-political commentary of Curtis Mayfield and
Marvin Gaye, but in the post-Ferguson era of continued police brutality towards African-Americans,
Lamar's anger burns bright. Less 'What's Going On', more ' The Predator'. He offers a thoughtful and
thought-provoking exploration of what it means to be a black man in America today, often introspective,
but never naval-gazing.

Inspired and inspiring, 'To Pimp A Butterfly' is an adventurous and challenging album, and one that can
be added to the essential hip hop list.

'Yo! Bum Rush The Show' was an invigorating record, but it looks like child's play compared to its
monumental sequel, 'It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back', a record that rewrote the rules of
what hip-hop could do. That's not to say the album is without precedent, since what's particularly
ingenious about the album is how it reconfigures things that came before into a startling, fresh, modern
sound. Public Enemy used the template Run DMC created of a rap crew as a rock band, then brought in
elements of free jazz, hard funk, even musique concrète, via their producing team, the Bomb Squad,
creating a dense, ferocious sound unlike anything that came before. This coincided with a breakthrough
in Chuck D's writing, both in his themes and lyrics. It's not that Chuck D was smarter or more ambitious
than his contemporaries - certainly, KRS-One tackled many similar sociopolitical tracts, while Rakim had a
greater flow - but he marshaled considerable revolutionary force, clear vision, and a boundless
vocabulary to create galvanizing, logical arguments that were undeniable in their strength. They only
gained strength from Flavor Flav's frenzied jokes, which provided a needed contrast. What's amazing is
how the words and music become intertwined, gaining strength from each other. Though this music is
certainly a representation of its time, it hasn't dated at all. It set a standard that few could touch then,
and even fewer have attempted to meet since.

First thing's first, Kdot's the greatest rapper alive. Through the hype-heavy new school G-shit of "Good

"To Pimp A Butterfly" and the free-wheeling, string of consciousness expression of "Untitled
Unmastered", the West Coast rapper has embarked on a creative period comparative to Stevie Wonder
in the 70s. Not concerned with setting the bar at Olympic record heights, Kendrick follows the 'voice of a
generation' vibe of "To Pimp A Butterfly" with a move straight out of the Bob Dylan playbook. Much like
the folk great going electric and swapping the protest songs for personal reflections, Kendrick finds the
middle ground between the hard hitting car bumpers of "GKMC" and societal rage of "TPAB" with a
fourteen track examination of his place within contemporary America. Over a series of whip beating,
bass heavy beats, Kendrick muses on religion, the media, whack rappers and relationships, inviting mega
stars Rihanna and U2 along for the ride. Beyond the massive singles "Humble" (better than Drake's
whole album) and "DNA" (FEAT. bowel emptying bass!) we get a faultless LP of diverse moods and
themes, culminating in the sublime "Duckworth". Taking us back to the early 90s, Kdot explores a chance
meeting between his father and TDE's Top Dawg, which could have resulted in Ducky's death, Top Dawg's
prison sentence and no Kendrick. Chillingly deep yo.

Werkha hails from Manchester originally and released his debut EP back in 2012. Following early praise
from Gilles Peterson and the like, he we went on to release a series of records for Brighton-imprint Tru
Thoughts, including an album in 2015, 'Colours Of A Red Brick Raft', and co-writing / producing Bryony
Jarman-Pinto's debut album in 2019. He's provided remixes for Quantic, Marcos Valles, Dutch Uncles,
Andrew Ashong & J-Felix, toured across Europe with Bonobo, Mr Scruff & Chet Faker and is working with
poet / singer Keisha Thompson, additionally to composing music for documentaries.

So to the EP, and we set off with the delectable synth-boogie of 'Generation X', laden with strings from
Simran Singh. Next up is the 4/4 low-slung head-nodding funk of 'The Key' featuring the vocal talents of
Berry Blacc, before we head into some mid-tempo clavinet-lead hip hop vibes on 'Swing Thru'; lush
strings again ably complementing and contrasting the bass-weight within the track. 'In Sunny G' follows
next, picking the tempo back up a touch with a soulful vocal hook from Ellen Beth Abdi delivering
blissed-out sun-glazed sonics, as the title would suggest. This 5-track opus closes out with 'Favourite
Corner'; similarly to the EP opener, this is more playfully groovy breakbeat, laced with strings, a
swagged-out guitar lick and assorted arpeggiated keys.

As to the meaning of the title 'The Rigour', Werkha says…

"Music is work. In all its different ways, it's a craft that I apply myself to and exist by. As much as that is
about love, it's also about pouring in time, effort, patience & rigour. This record is about reflecting on my
process and the identity of Werkha as a part of my life."

"These tracks were selected from a much larger bunch of ideas. The tracks that made this EP are the
ones where the process was playful. Play in music is so important and these tracks are the ones that best
personify play and curiosity, in both their sound and in their process. They all go through the rigor of
being played with, pushed and pulled in different directions…"

STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: MCR's own Werkha lands on Piccadilly favourite First Word with a fresh five tracker moving
between uptempo bruk, squelching boogie, head nod hip hop and breakbeat, all imbued with a futuristic
jazziness which looks to push things forward.
