1.2 Objectives of the Internship

Each kind of study has its own objective. Without objectives, nothing can be
achieved. An internship is a temporary position with an emphasis on-the-job training
rather than merely employment, and it can be paid or unpaid. I wanted to know about
share market and I was always curious about it. As an intern I had certain hopes and
goals to achieve from my internship. Some of my goals and objectives that cannot be
left unstated were:

 To enhance communication, interpersonal and public relation skill through

direct interaction with customer.
 To gain the practical knowledge on the Nepalese Share Market.

4
 To know the system of buying and selling of shares(trading).
 To learn about the Dematerialization process.
 To develop a professional network.
 To learn about the organizational system.
 To learn the experience of working activities under supervisor.
 To accumulate new skills.

1.3 Organizational Functioning

1.3.1 Business Strategy
It is concerned with how a company gains a competitive advantage for their products
and services. Michael Porter has identified four business strategies on the basis of
scope of the products customers and source of competitive advantage. Those
strategies are as follows:

Cost Leadership

Cost leadership strategies require firms to develop policies aimed at becoming and
remaining the lowest cost producer and/or distributor in the industry. The focus is on
cost leadership, and not on price leadership.

Differentiation

Differentiation strategies require a firm to create something about its product that is
perceived as unique within its market. Whether the features are real, or just in the
mind of the customer, customers must perceive the products as having desirable
features not commonly found in competing products.

Cost Focus

This strategy is also based on lower prices but to a particular segment or niche in the
market. The company, by understanding the dynamics of the market and unique needs
of the customers within it, develop products that can be sold in lower prices.

Value Focus

5
In this strategy, the company offers products with differentiated value to a particular
segment of market. These products and services are priced higher because of their
differentiation and value.

Sumeru Securities is following differentiation strategy. The company is focused on

creating value for their customers through specialised services. Before coming up of
Meroshare portal that is a single site for all the depository participants, they had their
own site which provided Demat statement services as well as news of different
financial institution with latest issuing of rights, bonus as well as IPO. This helped
them to differentiate from other brokers. Even now they have linked their website to
meroshare portal which makes easier for the client to log on to their own account.
The company updated their accounting software into ‘BOSS’ from mandala, which is
latest that is used by brokers in Nepal and also a smoother and easier version of
accounting. It also provides personal loans to the valued customers at lower interest
rate for investing in shares basically, this also differentiates the company from other
competitors.

CHAPTER II

JOB PROFILE AND ACTIVITIES PERFORMED

2.1 Internship Activities

This part includes various task performed during the internship at the stock broker.
The nine weeks of internship was very important as per the activities performed.
Sumeru Securities provides a wide range of services to its clients. I did work in almost
all departments and gained knowledge from it. Some departments are Customer
Service Department (Reception), DP Department, Finance and Treasury Department
(Account Department), Trading Department, and Information Technology
Department. The activities performed during my internship period in respective
department are described as follows.

2.1.1 General Task

When I joined Sumeru than I was not directly assigned any departments instead I did
the ordinary task. In starting period of my internship I did following work

 Filing and punching of form

 Named file alphabetically
 Data entry of detail information about clients in excel sheet
 Updated the KYC form systematically
 Wrote the three generation name in a notepad and their detail regarding
trading of share.
 And made those records in register too.

2.1.2 Customer Service Department

Customer Service Department is the front desk of any organization. It provides all
necessary information to the customers. For any organization, it is the main and most
important department which needs to deal with customer more than any department in
the organization. It is one of the busiest departments and it is the very place which
makes an early impression to the clients. The image and reputation of the organization
depends upon effective functioning of this department. It is the first place where the
customers first get the service. I was allowed to carry out all the work after a training
given of using the software. I deal with different activities for next two weeks such as:

8
 Dealt with Customers
 Handled Phone Calls
 Filled KYC form
 Filing and Documentation
 Statement handling and printing
 Account opened
 Account updated
 Cheque Distributed
 Provided balance information
 Received certificate for dematerialization
 Account renewed
 Online registration
 Scanning
 Data entered in excel sheet

So the busiest department was front desk where a lot of work needed to be carried out.
From next week, I was assigned to assist in front desk where I filled the demat form,
made form readily available for the clients, statement printing, made phone calls,
checked their balance in their share account, updated the clients bank details, cheque
issued and registered in register, done billing of account opening and account renewal,
scanned the citizenship of clients and so on.

2.1.3 DP Department

The DPs are intermediaries between the CD and account holders. Here all the Demat
account is managed and those account opened at the front desk needs approval from
this department. It is also liable to make letter for dematerialization of shares
generally called DRN (Dematerialization Reference Number). It also has to transfer
the shares that is bought and sold into the respective accounts. The department is
headed by Mr. Indra Bahadur Dangol. Though there was a lot of work to be done but I
was assigned the easiest task. In 4th and 5th week I did same task repeatedly such as:
 Checked the signature in share certificate and if not matched than made
telephone calls to shareholders and invited for making correction
 Verified signature in cheque
 Dematerialized the physical share certificate

9
 Did photocopy
 Printed the acknowledge letters of clients
 Generated DRN

2.1.4 Finance and Treasury Department (Account Department)

Here, they need to generate daily buying selling reports, post to particular accounts,
and collect payments, bank reconciliation, preparation of financial statement and all
other accounting works. It provides the information to the other department
authorizing them to transfer the concerned shares. Mr. Rajiv Shrestha is the head of
the department. In my 6th week of internship, I served in this department where I did
following task,

 Matched the balance of share in their account

 Settlement of buying and selling of shares
 Issued the statement of cheque
 Made payments to the clients

2.1.5 Information Technology Department

This department takes care of local area networking, maintenance and troubleshooting
of online servers, management of website and other online services. It also take care
of any technology related issues whether it is software or hardware. The department is
headed by Mr. Amit Man Manandhar. In this department I was new but I did my best
and contributed as much as I could. I helped my senior with device management
which included printer and photocopy machine management. I looked over clients and
helped them with maintaining television screen and Wi-Fi connection. Here, I just
assisted for a week.

2.1.6 Trading Department

This is the most sensitive part of the organization where trading of shares takes place.
This department is responsible for actual purchase and sales of securities as per
demand of customers. This is the main department where employees are much busy
and cannot procrastinate any work and also have to attend calls and individual. This
department facilitates purchase, sales, calculation of capital gain tax, and creation of
client KYC ID. The respective employee have to get orders for the clients and post it
in the order list of NEPSE to carry out the transaction, they also need to generate a
particular customer code(NEPSE code) for carrying out transaction. They also had to

10
look after the Debit Instruction Slip (DIS) Cheque which is received from the client
who sells the shares. This department is headed by Mr. Jeeban Prasai. All clients were
crowed here and shout about selling and buying particular amount of share. I was
given a separate desktop and a small cabin type where I did my work peacefully. Here
I served for 1 more week i.e. in my 8 th week of internship. I got to know many good
clients and their tactic of trading of shares. I performed task such as

 Filled up the cheque with necessary information

 Matched the information provided in cheque with the printed sheet of detail of
clients
 Filled the NEPSE code of banks in cheque
 Made quiet environment inside the trading area
 Verified the signature of clients in demat account and in cheque

2.1.7 Freelancer
During the last week of my internship period, I was like a freelancer body who could
assist in any departments I liked. As I had already worked in all departments, I was
free to do anything. I was called by my supervisor for feedback and given a moral
lesson regarding life and he also taught a lot about how share markets operates. I
interacted with many clients and observed the share market in big screen with them
and listened their talks. Marketing and Human Resource Department is handled by
Mr. Sunil Shrestha. The department facilitates recruitment, work allotment and
division, determines the requirement, handles customer grievances and also performs
various marketing functions that are allowed by SEBON.

2.2 Problem Solved

There are no such particular events or activities I performed, that can be viewed as the
solution to some sorts of distinct problems in the organization. All employees perform
their duties and responsibility in the organization most of the time. Though I didn’t
had the authority to be involved in many financial activities in the organization but a
simple helps the senior staffs to save their time as well as effort. I found daily
transaction list quite messy and spread on the corner. So, I arranged the documents and
put the documents inside the respective box and stacked them in one of the corners of
the room. It didn’t look quite messy after my little effort. I solved problem like

11
maintaining the customer’s account files by arranging & putting those files into
respective files& places.

2.2.1 Methodology Used

This study is mostly descriptive in nature where the facts and findings are described in
a systematic manner. Information required for the preparation of report has been
collected from observation of the activities that are performed in the broker firm and
the personal interview and consultation with the staffs involved in different
departments.
Secondary data have also been used in the report such as websites, brochures, books,
newspapers and so on.

2.2.2 Conclusion
This internship program was conducted as a partial fulfillment of the MBA Course
under Pokhara University which provides student an opportunity to familiarize with
organizational culture and develop managerial skills exposing oneself of the real-life
functions of the business organization. The internship period is an exciting phase of a
student’s life. It is not just a requirement to pass one’s exams and get a degree, but it
is a period where one builds professional contacts, learns the art of listening and
observing. Such kind of program helps the students to broaden their horizons and
actually put whatever they have learnt into practice. It provides the students with extra
knowledge and would prepare them to face the real work environment after
graduation. It helps in making the students more competent in today’s competitive
workplace. Moreover, it helps in developing the necessary skills required to cope with
various kinds of work problems.

The internship program helped me in learning new skills and adding to the knowledge
base while gaining confidence in the abilities, provided opportunity to practice
communication and teamwork skills, gain industry knowledge first hand from an
organization and professionals, provided evidence that the intern has initiative, is
reliable, and has a sense of responsibility. It also helped me in developing networking,
establishing mentors and references and enhanced the resume. This report in
particular has made me know about the various products and services provided by this
organization and the operational procedure. I learnt about various aspects of share
market, socializing with the staffs and customers, forming networks, dealing with the

12
senior staffs, getting out of difficult situations, dealing with the intern colleagues, and
patiently solving the problems faced in the workplace. Customer satisfaction is the
key to retain the customers in the organization. Organizational and behavioral
disciplines are the most important factors and the intern must maintain discipline in
order to be appreciated.

I was always curious to know how share market function and luckily I got chance to
be intern in one of the leading share broker i.e. Sumeru Securities where I got to know
more and more about how the share market operates and how the trading is done. It
was a great experience being an intern in Sumeru. I have more knowledge and
information regarding secondary market. The nine weeks of internship program has
been very fruitful. Almost all my objectives of doing internship was fulfilled and
achieved. It helped me gain tremendous knowledge and experience with different
departments. The internship added sense of responsibility to me while performing any
task. The experience of internship was incredible which boosted my confidence level
and enhanced my inter-personal communication skills. It developed interaction skills
and shaped up my personality too.

The knowledge gained was very valuable for my career in business. The main
objective of any internship is to gain professional knowledge and workplace
experience before joining any organizations as permanent employees. I am very
privileged for having an opportunity to enhance my skills and knowledge which
prepared me for the days to come. Therefore, internship program is a great
opportunity for students like us to experience the real world situation within the
organization.

2.2.4 Intern’s Key Observation

Internship program in Sumeru’s different department was very interesting and I

enjoyed working in that environment. During the period of my internship I have
observed lots of things some was very good and something need to be changed. I feel
familiar working as an intern in share market. The key things that I have observed
during my internship period are as follows:

 Employees were very cooperative to each other.

 Internal auditing was separately done.
 All staffs were positive to the interns and they were ready to make us learn
about the operation of the organization.

13
 Employees were always ready to do what they are asked to do.
 I found there proper communication between the employees and top level
management.

CHAPTER III

LESSONS LEARNT AND FEEDBACK

3.1 Key Skill and Attitudes Learnt

The nine weeks internship program was definitely not sufficient to understand the
vast organizational work procedures and system but it was effective enough to learn
the importance of the proper organization cultures and its effect on the professional
working environment. This internship not only gave an opportunity to learn about
basic activities of the various departments that I worked in but also helped me to
shape my personality and character to greater extent. I was nothing before the
internship but I was something and achieved a lot during my internship period. Along
with it, the internship program has made the intern believe that socializing with the
people, dealing with customer and the co-worker or a senior, making the working
environment friendlier.

I had never worked in any share market organization before it due to which this was
an opportunity to learn and understand the real working scenario and work dynamics
and also about the capital market. It gave me immense experience about what makes
people buy and sell shares. During my internship, I can say that I made some progress
in all the above mentioned objectives of internship. I learned many things on how a
broker firm performs and also how a depository participant carryout their operation. I
learned quite a few things about trading, IPOs, FPOs, share ownership transfer
decision making, and role of NEPSE and SEBON and financial accounting. So, some
illustratable lessons learnt during the internship program can be listed as below:

3.1.1 Developed Communication Skills

Communication is the key to interact with people and be successful in life. My first
objective was to improve my communication skill which I did successfully. I’m an
introvert kind of person but I developed a lot of interaction skill. CSD is one of the
departments where we have to face many customers each day. I learned to
communicate and deal with the customers having different perception.

14
3.1.2 Time Management Skills
As we all know that“time and tide waits for none”. So it is us who have to move as
per time. Time management is must for professional to have balance between
personal and professional life. Working at the Sumeru for those nine weeks along
with attending my classes in the morning and trying to be punctual made positive
changes within me. Keeping our self-busy, contended and punctual is what I learnt
through my nine weeks long internship program.

3.1.3 Improved Interpersonal Skills

In my time there, I had the opportunity to interact with a lot of customers which
helped me in improving my interpersonal skills, situational changes, decision making
medium and understanding customer- service provider relationship. I had to
collaborate with other employees, both seniors and peers, to perform tasks in groups
which taught me the proper workplace behavior to adopt.

3.1.4 Developed Technical Skills

I learnt to use scanner, photocopy and printer. Our office used the software called”
BOSS” which was updated from MANDALA. I worked and operated those machines
and software.

3.1.5 Changed Attitude and Behavior

Employee must possess highly positive attitude, multitasking ability, and patience
behavior. Courtesy and responsiveness are equally important traits in an employee. I
felt how the behavior of an employee can influence the way a customer reacts and
gets his work done. I learnt to be more polite and patience during those periods.

3.1.6 Dedication to Work

Any task, whether it may be big or small, routine or strategic, should be performed
with great attention and dedication. There should be no space for negligence.
Dedicated people are the successful one. Working at the broker firm made me realize
the importance of dedication in whatever we tend to dream and make it happen at
present or in the days to come. So I am much more dedicated towards my work.

3.1.7 Team Work

Working in team, makes every difficult task easy. I was assisted by seniors and
collaborated with my colleagues. Everybody was eager to teach me how the system
operates and how to simplify the task. It was a wonderful team work there.
15
3.1.8 Networking
I came along a lot of people there of different nature. Many of them were so friendly
and cooperative and fun to interact with. I develop a good relation with my team
members and seniors as well as some of clients. I got to meet a lot of new and
energetic people who even promised to provide training over how the share market
operates and doing investment in it.

3.1.9 Handled New Problems

I learnt how to handle the new and unstructured problems aroused in the daily
working experiences and to make good relations with co-workers, seniors, corporate
clients and general customers.

3.1.10 Managerial Skills

There was a lot of work related with management. I learnt filing and documentation,
punching the files, data entry in excel sheet, managing the files chronologically and so
on.

3.1.11 Sincerity and Adaptability

To perform any task, we need to be punctual and sincere. Discipline is the foundation
required in any organization. So I learnt to be punctual, be disciplined, be sincere and
confidence towards myself. I was easily adapted in that environment and be familiar
to all staffs.

3.1.12 Innovative and Leadership Skills

Though I was not much creative but I helped them to manage their interior design
with my little creativeness. Everybody was senior to me there so there was no point of
sleading but I was like leader to team of interns. I learnt to manage clients and my

3.2 Feedback to the Organization
The internship program gave an opportunity to explore the corporate environment.
After having great working experience as an intern for nine weeks in Sumeru
Securities and observing its working environment and procedures, I found Sumeru
has its excellent working system. At the same time some area of improvement has
been identified. The major feedbacks for enhancing its performance are:

 For the effective management of interns, there should be a proper placement

schedule for each intern in terms of the duration and departments they will
work in with some kind of small orientation program about the working policy
of organization.
 Management team should not discriminate between their employee and intern.
As well as should not overload the intern with work as they are unpaid intern
and had compulsion to do internship.
 The performance of the interns should be monitored and evaluated and job
opportunities can be offered to the best intern so that interns could actually
learn something important during the internship period and thus take
internship period as an opportunity rather than partial fulfillment of the course.
 The office equipment’s such as photocopy machine, desktops, printer,
scanners etc. need to be replaced or updated. Most of the machines were old
and had problem functioning properly due to which the customers were not
able to get information. The software called BOSS did not respond sometimes
and the customers have to wait for balance inquiry.
 Most of the staffs are of Newari background and they communicate in their
own language which made other staffs difficult to understand. So all staffs
must communicate with common language so all can easily understand.
 The working space is small and work load is more. So the organization must
increase the working area or shift the location to a better place.
 The staffs have a habit of procrastinating their duty or shifting their assigned
task to their juniors which shows negligence towards their responsibility. So
the management team must focus to functional level to improve working
efficiency.

The above mentioned problem must be addressed by the management and must work
in order to improve the services this office has been providing to its customers. For
this, plan must be made and effective implementing of the plan is the most.

3.3 Feedback to the College

The college has to consider the following factor to ensure the students go smoothly
along with the internship program:

 College should help students in getting the internship opportunities at different

organizations that matches their profile which can be a good place to learn and
experience the new working environment.
 In orientation program, college should not only focus about banks but should
equally give importance to all sectors so that students are not discouraged to
join other than banks.
 For students it can get difficult at times to do the internship and manage the
studies along with it. Thus, college should give minimum amount of study
load to the students during internship.
 Students only get to go to the training once during their academic degree,
which, in my opinion, is insufficient for their practical experience to be
improved. These types of activities should be conducted more regularly.
 College should contact to the organization and visit at working place during
the internship period of student to know the student progress.
