lucky interns can make money while learning. The possibilities are endless for interns
to learn valuable new skills and discover their true talents. With an internship, one can

CHAPTER II

INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANCY

2.1Meaning and Definition of Educational Consultancy

An educational consultant is an independent consultant who helps parents, students and

organizations with educational planning. They are classed as "educational, vocational and
school counselors." Educational consultants, however, are normally self-employed or
employed by consulting firms while school counselors are employed by schools. An
educational consultancy was established with an objective of catering proper information
and guidance to parents interested in sending their offspring for abroad studies.
Educational consultancies are professionals keeping abreast of knowledge on every detail
in abroad study and subsequent student counseling. Educational Consultancy was
established with crystal clear motive to provide quality service to students whose
endeavor is to earn qualification and experiences from overseas. The history of
educational consultancy in Nepal is not very long. After the end of autocratic Rana
Regime, international studies were exposed in Nepal. Recently, the industry of education
consultancy has been growing widely. Nowadays there are lots of educational
consultancies available in Kathmandu Valley.

2.2Association of Educational Consultancy (ECAN)

Educational Consultancy Association of Nepal, with its acronym ECAN, formally

registered under the Government of Nepal, Chief District Administration Office in
Kathmandu in the year 1997.The establishment of ECAN was to develop, foster and
safeguard the abroad study consultation services. Had ECAN not formed, Nepal as a
nation would be vulnerable to external forces in international education. Since its
establishment, ECAN has been playing a significant role in facilitating students to gain
access to international education. ECAN’s such role changes as the pace of time. In 1997,
it was just about clustering like-minded people at a table. In the millennium (2000), it
was to revitalize all its members with the feel of cooperation, less the competition. After
four years in 2004, it was to have varieties and for exploration of study options,
identifying the key destination countries for students towards their further study options.

ECAN was much matured when it arrived in 2007, and envisioned to have a role to
provide proper information, guidance and counseling to students and parents. Just
admission counseling was a trend in the past, and in 2009, ECAN stepped ahead with a
mission to equip every member, students and parents with an updated information on
almost everything—policies and requirement, courses and the destination, places and the
people. At the same time, ECAN, with its 2nd series of Education Fair on the go,
received a number of complaints by emails from the students that boarded plane to
foreign land for their further studies. This was an intriguing role for ECAN to monitor
issues around and solve the problems therein, and at the same time collaborate with the
government to tackle such issues and address as relevant. ECAN faced numerous such
occurrences in the past and succeeded in resolving almost every single of them by
rewarding justice to the victims and penalizing the malefactors.

As an organization of elite, and for everyone, ECAN now boasts everything from hosting
the compliance office of discipline to international liaison committee, from the
monitoring department to the national coordination team. With such composition of
organization, ECAN ensures the current practice within the established code of conduct
and maintains abroad study service within its scope. ECAN from its inception values its
responsibility towards the society, and therefore hosts a number of scholarships on timely
manner to Nepali citizens from the indigenous background.

2.3Varieties of consultancy

While some educational consultants are generalists, many specialize in assisting

particular kinds of students or particular educational needs. For example, some
consultants focus exclusively on assisting students with college planning and admissions,
some on students seeking a private secondary school, and yet others specialize in students
who are learning disabled or have behavioral/emotional difficulties. Other consultants
provide advising services for college students seeking admission to graduate school.
Other educational consultants work to assist high schools and other organizations with
educational program planning. Fees for consulting services vary widely. Some
consultants charge an hourly fee, while others offer an "all inclusive" package that may
include unlimited hours of service. Some consultants offer a sliding scale based on family
income, or offer pro bono services to low income students.

Families considering hiring an educational consultant should carefully assess the

qualifications and experience of individual consultants. Membership in one or more of
the professional organizations described above may also indicate a consultant's dedication
to professionalism, since these organizations have specific requirements for the education
and experience of their members. In particular, these professional associations prohibit
their members from accepting compensation from educational institutions for student
referrals. However, in addition to looking at a consultant's experience and professional
affiliations, families should also ask for references from past clients. Consultants should
be clear about their fees, counseling process, educational philosophy, and expectations at
the beginning of the relationship.

The field of educational consulting has grown considerably in the past decade. Those
considering launching an educational consulting practice should begin by assessing their
personal qualifications and experiences. Most successful consultants enjoy working with
young people and their parents, and get satisfaction from helping students reach their
goals. Although a few educational consultants have received media attention for charging
large fees, prospective consultants should understand that very few consultants get rich
from educational consulting, so the desire to earn a high income should be a secondary
consideration. Since competition in the field is growing, prospective consultants should
also conduct market research to determine the feasibility of launching a practice in their
geographic area. Consultants should plan on being committed to continued professional
development, such as attending conferences and regular school visits. Several of the
organizations mentioned above hold annual conferences and offer training for those who
are new to the field of educational consulting. Additionally, there are a number of
universities and colleges that offer programs where consultants can further their
education and knowledge. Educational consultants are not bound by any particular
statutory rules for practitioners. However, many of the professional organizations listed
above have established standards for professional and ethical behavior for educational
consultants by which their members pledge to abide. Some education agents catering to
students applying to foreign universities are known to engage in ethically dubious
practices, such as writing essays for applicants.

2.4Organization Affiliation

The majority of educational consultants are located in the United States and in the United

Kingdom. The two main professional organizations for educational consultants in the
United States are the Higher Education Consultants Association and the Independent
Educational Consultants Association. The Higher Education Consultants Association is a
professional association focused exclusively on the practice of college
admissions consulting, while members of the Independent Educational Consultants
Association also assist students with consulting specialties that include college
admission, day and boarding school, at-risk students, and learning disabilities. Members
of both associations work with both American students and students from other countries
who are interested in coming to the United States to study. Many educational consultants
in the U.S. are also members of other associations, such as the National Association for
College Admission Counseling, its regional affiliates, and the National Association of
Therapeutic Schools and Programs.

A huge number of educational consultants are based in the United Kingdom, Canada,
Europe, Asia, and South America. The primary association in the UK is the Society of
Education Consultants (SEC). Other UK professional associations or bodies to which
educational consultants typically seek membership or affiliation include the Department
for Children, Schools and Families, Ofsted (The Office for Standards in Education,
Children's Services and Skills), Learning and Skills Council, Council for the Curriculum,
Examinations and Assessment, Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunal and
the Gilfus Education Group

2.5Types of Education Consultancy Services offered by the Company

Various types of education consultancy services provided by the company are as follows:
i) Bridge course:

Bridge course is an entrance preparation course for Higher Secondary level which is
taken by different colleges to select the qualified students from pool of students. Both
Science and management faculty had to take preparation course for better score in
entrance. This course was design to fulfill the gap between secondary level and higher
secondary level. This course utilizes the gap time of the students by revising the previous
course and make interconnection to higher level course.

Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd had also organized bridge course of Science faculty
for 2 Months. We had run our course with 5 students and up to the end we have reached
15 students. Altogether we had run 182 classes of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English
and Math. Though it was our first program run by institute, we had conducted this
program in Break Even Point (BEP). We focus on the quality services that we provide.
We had an experienced tutor of all courses. Out of 15 students, 4 students are successful
to admit into St. Xavier and one student is admitted into Budhanilakantha School.
Remaining students get enrolled in other school. Some problems were arises during
classes. At rainy days, most of the students didn't come to classes and we had to cancel
the class time to time. To manage timing of all tutors is also difficult. Flexible time of
tutors was common and they all ask their class for same timing. And one of the main
problems in the institute was late payment. Most of the students had done late payment
up to the last date. Some ran away after studying just 1 month with partial payment. But
finally we were successful to collect all the payment and conclude our Bridge course
program.

ii) CMAT:

CMAT is a Central Management Aptitude Test taken by Tribhuvan/Pokhara

University.  It is a compulsory Entrance Exam for students who want to join Bachelor
Programs in the field of Management after completing +2 in Management or Science
stream. Every applicant of the BBA/BBM/BMS/BIM/BHM/BTTM Program is required
to appear in the Entrance Test (CMAT).

The test includes area like:-

❖ Verbal Ability
❖ Quantitative Ability
❖ Logical Reasoning
❖ General Awareness

There shall be altogether one hundred (100) objective questions in the CMAT, containing
25 questions in each section (Verbal, Quantitative, Logical and General Awareness) with
a total weight of 100 marks. Student must secure a minimum of 40% in the CMAT in
order to qualify for the interview and admission.

Eligible for CMAT:

❖ Students who have cleared XI and are waiting for XII may also apply.
❖ Students must secure at least 45% marks.

We (Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd) had conducted CMAT program for nearly 2 and
half months. We had started this program from 15 students and finally we were
successful to reach up to 28 students. We had conducted this program with 5 tutors of
different faculty with high experience level. Our CMAT program and Students were also
focused for SankharDev College (SDC) and Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC). We had
12 classes of CMAT in a week. Course content were taught in 8 classes and in remaining
four classes test were taken. We had a system that, those students who scores less than
previous entrance test marks should pay fine of Rs. 20. This program is second program
for our institute and we were able to make profit from this Course. We had taken them
outing at bhotekoshi for rafting. For Extra-curricular activities, we had conducted Outing
program, Public Speaking program, Communication workshop, Interview tips program
and other soft skills program based for students.

Finally, we had organized college visit to different colleges of Tribhuvan

University/Pokhara University/Kathmandu University. These visits of different college
make them known about the college and other facilities. They can make choice and
compare college as per their requirement.

iii) Stock Market Training:

We (Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd) had conducted Stock Market Training as per the
demand of students. It is about one week training in which five days were given
theoretical training and remaining days practical knowledge is provided. Mr. Santosh Raj
Bajgain was tutor for the fundamental stock market training. We were successful to run
two batch of the Stock Market Training. All together this training generate more profit
percentage rather than other programs. We had faced timing problem of tutor that his
timing was available on evening only. So to conduct practical training in trading hours
was difficult. Finally we had completed our stock market Training program successfully.

iv) IELTS:

International English Language Test System (IELTS) is international standardized test of

English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. It is jointly
managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language
Assessment, and was established in 1989. IELTS is one of the major English-Language
tests in the world, other being the TOFEL, TOEIC, PTE: A and OPI/OPIc. IELTS is
accepted by most Australian, British, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions,
by over 3000 academic institutions in the United States, and by various professional
organizations across the world.

No minimum score is required to pass the test. An IELTS result or Test Report Form is
issued to all test takers with a score from "band 1" ("non-user") to "band 9" ("expert
user") and each institution sets a different threshold. Threshold depends upon the college
requirement. There is also a "band 0" score for those who did not attempt the test.
Institutions are advised not to consider a report older than two years to be valid, unless
the user proves that they have worked to maintain their level.

Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd had conducted IELTS program for the one and half
month with highly experience IELTS Instructor. It was our first program related to
consultancy. We had representation of 3 colleges (VIBE College, RGIT College and
Lead College) of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Two of these colleges (VIBE College
and RGIT College) requires more than 5.5 each band IELTS score. And Lead College
requires more or equal to 6.0 each band in IELTS.
v) Tuition Classes:

We (Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd) had conducted different tuition classes of
different subjects such as (Account, Tax, Finance, Mathematics, and Statistics). More
than five batches were run during the board exam time. Numbers of students were
engaged in our tuition classes in all programs. To run these tuition classes were very easy
for our institute because most of the subjects are taught by one tutor and that particular
tutor is managing director of the Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd. This is also another
program that generate huge amount of revenue to the organization. As per the need and
demand of the students, our institute will be ready to run any types of tuition classes.

vi) Career Development Workshop

The program focuses on assisting individuals to identify their major career goals and to
determine what they need to do to achieve these goals. When individuals are assisted in
better understanding of his or her needs and aspirations through interest, life-planning

Assessment tools followed by individualized counseling session. Guest lectures will be
arranged regarding companies’ expectations from candidates.

vii) Cover Letter Writing Workshop

Cover letters are what help employer decide whether or not to take a look at your resume.
You want your letter to stand out so that you have a change at your next career. The
cover letter should be different and customized to each job you apply for. Rather than
following a common format, which will just make you an ordinary in the herd, our career
counselor work personally with you to craft your cover letter?

viii) Resume Writing Workshop

The resume is like a calling card. A prospective employer may only scan the resume for
less than a minute before moving on to the next one in the stack. So, you better make it a
good one. Resume writing workshop is intended to make candidate saleable in the job
market. Like each person is unique in himself/herself similarly every resume should be
unique to its own. Therefore, rather than following a standard format, our career
counselors, understanding your distinct capabilities, work with you personally to craft
your resume.

ix) Written Examination Preparation Techniques

The individuals are overviewed about written examination questions. For the better
understanding of written exams, sample questions and aiding materials will be provided
to the students. Examination is a game of technique in which students play with the
questions in limited time boundary. It is a time to show student's knowledge and
education of the course materials with limited time. So our Silicon Education Network
Pvt. Ltd will give certain tips and technique to face the question in tactful manner. We
create such an environment like examination and practice them to face problem in
examination. At the meantime, we encourage and motivate them to focus on
examination. Main problem of the examination is fear. So how to play with those
emotions which is arises before the examination or at the time of examination. We try to
build self-confidence to our students of examination. A student who has enough and
sufficient content and subject matter than he will be able to face each and every question
in an examination. So Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd plays an important role for
written examination preparation.

group discussion program to our CMAT students which helps them to gain knowledge in
different way than they used to do before. Through this techniques each and every

xi) Interview Facing Skills Workshop

Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd conducts interview facing skills workshop where
individuals will be briefed about different interview facing techniques. Students are then
asked to fill the form outlining their interest industry/country where they want to pursue
their career. Individual mock interview and stress interview will be conducted followed
by necessary feedbacks. This Program was also conducted to the CMAT and Bridge
course students as they are going to face interview in coming days at the time of
admission for higher education. We had run workshop and training program to give some
important tips and techniques that helps to every individual to face interview easily. As
we all know that fear is the major problem of facing interview. At the time of interview,
if we had to face new people with lots of questions and putting different obstacles than
we will lose our confidence and knowledge content. So we try to make them confidence
through different techniques.

motivation and trust and improve the culture of the organization. The second part is
designed to provide the participants tools and techniques required by the staffs at various
levels. The combination will help employees to dedicatedly engage themselves in the
tactical and operational level of the organization’s functions. Thus the program includes
modules in relation to the technical hard skills and soft skills required by the
organizations.

ACTIVITIES DONE AND REFLECTION ON THE

INTERNSHIP
4.1Activities Done

 Filing and indexing

Filing means keeping documents in a safe place and being able to find them easily and
quickly. Documents that are cared for will not easily tear, get lost or dirty. In short Filing
is the process of organizing the documents and records in a proper sequence.  Indexing is
the process of determining the name, subject or other captions under which the
documents are filed. Index is a guide to records. Filing and indexing are so inter- related
that filing without indexing is incomplete and indexing without filing does not exist.

There are more than 60 students in CMAT, Bridge Course and Share classes. To manage
all their application form and other document, we had made filing with proper indexing.
Proper indexing makes us easier to record the documents in particular files. So, I came to
know the importance of filing and indexing in an organization.

 Strategic Implementation

Strategy is a long term action plan to achieve desired objective. Implementation is the
process of taking action as per the desire plan. Strategy implementation is very important
steps for any organization. The success of any organization depends upon how an
organization effectively implements that strategy.

Our organization has targeted niche market as a potential market. We had taken different
strategy to penetrate that market. First of all we had survey the market and we came to
know that our consumers are mainly guided and attract by the low cost. So we had used
low cost strategy to address those consumers. We had segment our market nearby our
organization and different marketing strategies are used to capture their interest. We had
distributed leaflet and make a call to those potential students.

 Conducted Mock Test

We had conducted Mock test of Bridge Course and CMAT every Saturday. I had
involved in question preparing, checking papers, arrangement of classes and publishing
the result. We used to reward those students who secure top marks in mock test and
collects fine to those students who get less marks.

We had faced many difficulties while conducting this test. Sometime many numbers of
students had attended the test. So to manage all those students in rush hour is difficult.
Due to the external factors, such as climatic condition of that day also affect the number
of students.

 Conducted Career Development event

Our organization had conducted career development program to attract the potential
consumers. One day program leads our organization to create some positive image on the
segmented market. I had lots of responsibilities in that event and hosted that program up
to the end. I had to manage all the required materials and resources in that program.

We had spent lots of time on brainstorming to conduct successful program without any
obstacles, though we had to face lots of obstacles during the programs. Some unexpected
problem were also arises and we had go through it. I had got lots of chance to learn many
more things while conducting events. We need to be aware about some extra
circumstances that can be arise and more back up is necessary. I had learnt to host the
program, to speak in mass and some other techniques that make our mass speaking
attractive.

 Organize CV writing workshop

Nowadays, curriculum-vitae are important for the job market. Every organization demand
CV of the candidates. CV needs to be more attractive that attract the eyes of recruiter. So
we had conducted two days CV writing workshop to more than 15 students.

I had also gain the knowledge about contain of CV and who to make it more attractive.
Due to this workshop, I got chance to meet different people and make good relationship
with them. I had handled all the activities that are required to operate the program
successfully. I came to know the nature of different people and can work with them in
that environment. Such person brings difficult situation and we need to go through it.
These activities teach us to tackle the problem and make a right decision.

 Tutor for CMAT classes

As Silicon Education Network Pvt. Ltd had conducted CMAT classes, I had also taught
some English classes for those CMAT students. Sometime when teaches get absent than I
take classes of all section of CMAT. I used to listen that person gets more knowledge
while teaching rather than reading themselves. So by teaching math I came to know, that
above sentences is true. I had to tackle all the question arises from the students. When I
was students, I used to make lot of noise. But now I came to know how much difficult to
handle all those noise and make class peaceful. I had learned different more things by
teaching.

 Conducted share classes

There is more demand of share classes in the market. So to address that problem we had
conducted Stock Market training of two weeks. It is too difficult to manage tutor timing
and students. We had to run share classes after our office timing i.e. 6 PM to 7 PM. So
there is problem to our staff. Our office used to open up to 12 hours. As I was intern, so
maximum time I had to spend in office. So I had learned to adopt any changes in
organization. I got chance to know about the share market trend and present situations.

 Handle all the administrative activities.

Though our organization is small, I need to look after all the upcoming activities and deal
with the present activities. I need to match all the expenses, record the expenses, issue the
bills, collect all the income and make deposit into bank account. I had to manage the
required materials for different events and classes for CMAT and Bridge courses. If any
misunderstand occur than I need to convey to upper level. I had to report all the activities
done in a week on the Every last day of week (Friday) to the upper level team. I came to
know the structure way of doing activities in an organization. I had learned to accept
every order that was given by the senior team member of an organization.
