Use reported or indirect speech to report what a person said without using exactly the
same words, if the reporting verb is in the past (said or told), the verb in reported speech
usually changes.

Examples

The boys said (that) they were taking German lessons twice a week”.

Reporting Questions

Use the verb ASK in the past (ASKED) to report questions.

Elena: Are you a Teacher?


Elena ASKED me if I was a Teacher

*if: Use if when reporting Yes, No questions.

Direct WH questions

Elena asked me What my name was.

What:Use the same word of the direct questions.

Reporting imperative sentences

Use the verb Tell in the past (Told) to report imperative sentences (orders, prohibitions,
commands and instructions).

Daniel: Sasha, arrive on time”

Daniel told her to arrive on time.

Use the infinite with TO when reporting imperative sentences.

Mom: “don’t talk in class boys”

Mom told them not to talk in class.

Use Not and the infinite with To when reporting imperative sentences.

HOMEWORK

Part I: Change the sentences into reported speech.
