What are the production methods used in Philippines for producing Tomato?
General Information
Tomato Cultural Management in the Philippines
a. Seedling production - preparing the seedling trays, garden soil, compost and other materials
during sowing of tomato seeds. Pricking and thinning could be done one week after sowing
while drench foliar fertilizer could be done one week before transplanting.
b. Land preparation – selecting a well drained sandy, or sandy loam soils with pH of 6.0 to 7.0.
Plow and harrow the soil twice. Need to set furrow distance at 0.75 to 1.5 meter depending on
the tomato varieties.
c. Transplanting and fertilizer application - transplant of seedlings could be done 3 to 4 weeks
after sowing. Basal fertilizer is applied at planting time, second fertilizer application at 2 weeks
after transplanting, and last fertilizer application at 4 weeks after transplanting.
d. Weeding and cultivation – off-barring is done before the first side dressing and hilling-up after
application of fertilizer. Hand weeding is done within the first month from transplanting by
removing the weeds near the base of the plants.
e. Trellising – recommended to use bamboo or “Ipil-ipil” poles as post, A-type trellis are usually
used to train the vines using plastic straw.

What are the storage methods used in Philippines for keeping Tomato?
General Information
- Newly harvested green ripe tomatoes are recommended to be placed in well-ventilated
containers e.g. wooden crates before transporting to packing house.
- Tomato fruits will be sorted according to their sizes like big, medium or small. Different sizes
of tomato fruits should be placed in different containers.
- On seed packaging and storing, it is best to use moisture resistant packaging materials such as
thick polyethylene plastic, aluminum foil, tin cans, or glass jars and seal them well.
- Remember to keep seeds away from moisture and high temperature. The cooler and drier the
storage area, the longer the shelf life of the tomato seeds.
