JOURNAL 1
Compute the probability distribution of a random variable for both discrete and continuous data.
1. How do you rate yourself in the given Course Outcome?
2. What tasks have you done that help you attain the said Course Outcome?
3. What is your favorite topic/least favorite topic for this Course Outcome?

Rating myself in the given Course Outcome from 1-10 as 1 being the lowest and 10 being the
highest would be 8. Having mathematics as my waterloo, I still manage to cope up during
discussions and absorb the lessons considering this is relatively an easy topic compared to other
statistical and mathematical topics. I can say 8 only because I wasn’t able to fully gasp the
Course Outcome because I know that I lack in the mastery of the gained learnings.

The tasks that I know really helped me to attain the Course Outcome are the problem set (PS)
and answering homework from web assign. The handwritten solutions in problem sets are very
helpful in practicing solving problems at the same time very handy, as these can serve as our
notes that we can review from time to time. Another, the web assign homework, which is a very
good supplementary for our learnings as it helps us to familiarize our self from problems and to
practice solving problems. Compare to problem set, web assign homework offers a more
comprehensive learning for me because it has a read button for every question that is
hyperlinked to readings or modules of lessons which are helpful in understanding the topic for
you to be able to answer the question and it has also more variety or range of questions for a
certain lesson coverage compared to problem sets.

As for my favorite topic, it would be Discrete Random Variable because mostly it has countable
no. of possible outcomes. Its probability has a value between 0 and 1 having all the sum of its
probability equal to 1. I think it is easier compared to other topics because it has references
where you can make your assumptions and be able to connect it to the probability formulas. We
know that discrete random variable models can solve some basic problems which can be handy
for us in our everyday lives specially in decision makings. For my least favorite for this course
outcome is Poisson Distribution that uses rate of parameter, the lambda (λ), in finding
probability of a no. of event to occur in a given period or time having the event independent to
each other and no particular time to occur or randomly spaced. The part where it gets difficult
for me is when the Poisson distribution is used as the limiting case of a binomial distribution
and I don’t know when it will behave as a limiting case when using it in problem solving.

I may have difficulties in understanding the topics but I know that there is no point of mastering
the correct understanding of this topics, the more important thing is how we can learn this in
sufficient ways that will leads us into doing a lot of interesting works.
