E NHANCE Y OUR M EMORY

“The more bizarre the memory aids are, the easier it
will be for you to recall.” – Olaniyi Evans

The triplets, Ella Mbappé, Emma Mbappé and Ewa Mbappé,

were empty-headed beauties in the same Mechanical
Engineering class. First two semesters in the university, each
failed at least seven courses. The rumor was the vast $25
billion wealth of their parents had rendered them slothful. A
widespread theory on campus even condemned them as
innately daft. However, the truth was each invested at least 10
hours per day studying in the quietest and the remotest corner
of the library, yet they failed. Woefully.

One of their concerned professors connected them to

Professor Wow for counsel. Though first astounded at this trio
of dullards, Prof was overwhelmed with empathy. In his
unflagging magnanimity, he galvanized into action by placing
them on a strict regimen of memory enhancement with
mnemonics. Play by play, he remolded them. A few semesters
afterwards, the triplets were astonished at their mental
dexterity. Increasing their memory skills helped them
memorize faster and remember more facts, dates, history,
story lines, outlines, whole chapters and more. They shot to
the top of their class and became the genius triplets of repute.

E YE -O PENERS ABOUT M EMORY 1

 Memory is not perfect. Few people have “picture-
perfect” memories that can record information the
way a 1000MP camera does. Like the Mbappé triplets,
most people have to use various strategies to help
them remember.

 Memory is a case of “use it or lose it.” Memory

strategies need practice and discipline. Also your
capacity to use the memory effectively may seem more
difficult if you haven’t been in a school setting
recently.

 Memory is a skill that can be learned. Memory

strategies are not instinctive or inborn – they must be
learned. There are many different strategies to help
you remember information in the fashion of the
remolded Mbappé triplets.

 Memory does not diminish over time. Many people

think that memory “goes” when they get 100 years old.

In fact, memory stays quite intact – it is the speed of
retrieval that diminishes.

 Rote memorization has limitations. If you rely on it for

your exams, you may be in for a big surprise. Using it
to memorize an entire semester’s worth of information
will not only be difficult, but trying to do so can cause
a great deal of anxiety for you.

M NEMONICS
Professor Wow used mnemonics to remold the Mbappé
triplets to geniuses. Mnemonics, or memoria technica, are
strategies for remembering information that is otherwise quite
difficult to recall. It is an effective means of enhancing
memory and fun way to remember information. Various
types of mnemonics exist under each category and which type
works best is limited only by your imagination. The
mnemonics are:

1. Letter for word

2. Acronym
3. Music
4. Rhyme
5. Connections
6. Bizarreness effect

LINE OF ATTACK! When you need to memorize something,

first consider how to help your brain recall the information,
not merely reading it over and over again. The goal of
mnemonics is to quickly get the information into your short-
term memory so you can start practicing the recall process and
transfer the information into long-term memory. Let’s take a
quick glance at each of them.
