Tree Pruner

In Power Distribution Network Trees that are too close to power lines can interfere with electric service,
especially during bad weather/high winds. For reliability and safety of the network we needs to prune or remove
trees that threaten electric service.

SOP for Usage of Telescopic Tree Pruner

Before staring the work following points should be checked in Tree Pruner:

 The pole pruner is not damaged.

 The oil tank is closed.
 Device should have sufficient Lubrication.
 The guide bar and chain are properly mounted.
 The chain is properly tensioned.
 Accessories are properly mounted
 Battery is sufficiently charged to complete the work

Holding and Controlling the Pole Pruner:

 Wrap your thumb around the control

handle.
 Hold the pole pruner firmly with your
1 other hand on the handle hose wrap
your thumb around the handle hose.

A branch may fall to the ground during cutting.

This can result in serious injuries.
2
Never stand directly underneath the branch
you are cutting. Maintain a shaft angle of no
more than 60° to the horizontal.

Keep children, bystanders and animals away

from the work area
While cutting trees, kickback can occurs,
i.e.the pole pruner can be thrown upwards
and backwards. The user can lose control of
the pole pruner and be seriously injured.

with both hands.
 Always keep your body out of the
plane of the cutting attachment.

The pole pruner is pushed back toward the

First perform a relieving cut (2) and then a

cross cut at a distance of 20 cm (A) from the
final cut (1). Perform a relieving cut and then
5 finish with a cross-cut (1).

Depending on the site conditions and type of

trees following are the few options suggested
for tree trimming near power lines:

6 Side Trimming
Under Trimming
V Trimming
Crown Reduction.

Round Over Trimming should be avoided.

During Wet/Rainy weather Direct contact with

7
EHV Power lines can cause flashovers of
tree.
Therefore trees should be timely pruned i.e.
before reaching in such conditions

Few Safety Precautions before starting tree trimming:

 Pruning near line vicinity should be undertaken in Offline/De-energized lines only.

 Pruning to be undertaken as per NGT guidelines
 Avoid long extension in telescopic pruner to mitigate dwindling/swinging effect and associated hazard.
 Use Sky-lift to access vegetation at heights.
 Never climb a tree in order to prune it.
 Don’t move ladders or long-handled pruning tools around the Power lines or in yard without first
looking up.
