Week 1

What is Science?

The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behaviour
of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.

It all begins with a question…

You have to write a review on a trending gaming app (you can select the app on your own)

List the steps you will take to write the review…

(Hint: Start by talking to people and researching on gaming apps)

If you carefully pay attention to what you have done, you can categorize your steps into 4 categories.

1. Research
2. Planning which app you will be considering
3. Trying the app
4. Writing your review

It is very clear that Step 1 has to come after step2 and so on. You cannot change the sequence of the
steps nor can you miss out a step. For e.g. Without trying the app you cannot write the review, or
without researching you cannot decide on app that is trending.

Similarly, in any scientific investigation there are 4 stages or steps. They are:-

1. Considering ideas and evidences (gather information and theories that are already proved and
evidences for them)
2. Planning (plan out your investigation how are you going to conduct the experiment, what will be
the dependent and independent variable*, what apparatus would you need etc)
3. Execution and observation ( carry out your experiment and note observations in a tabular or
empirical form)
4. Conclusion ( analyse the observations and formulate a conclusion for your experiment)
