Riprap Revetment Design Guide

Dumped riprap is graded stone dumped on a prepared slope in such a manner that segregation will not take place. Dumped riprap forms a layer of loose stone; individual stones can independently adjust to shifts in or movement of the base material. The placement of dumped riprap should be done by mechanized means, such as crane and skip, dragline, or some form of bucket.

INTRODUCTION
This report is included design calculations for Riprap Revetment at CH 29+800 to CH
29+820 LHS of the main trace. And it is a Dumped Riprap Protection and it can be
described as follows

Design of
Riprap Dumped riprap is graded stone dumped on a prepared slope in such a manner that
Revetment segregation will not take place. Dumped riprap forms a layer of loose stone; individual
HEC 11 stones can independently adjust to shifts in or movement of the base material. The
Metric Version placement of dumped riprap should be done by mechanized means, such as crane and skip,
dragline, or some form of bucket. End dumping from trucks down the riprap slope causes
segregation of the rock by size, reducing its stability, and therefore, should not be used as a
means of placement. The effectiveness of dumped riprap has been well established where it
is properly installed, of adequate size, and suitable size gradation.

Components

The Armor Layer consists of sufficiently sized stone and a thickness designed to be stable
under the design wave conditions and the design slope.

The Filter Layer consists of smaller stone or rubble that supports the larger armor stone
and prevents erosion of the underlying bluff material. This layer may also be called a
bedding layer. If this material is intended to be impermeable, it may be referred to as a
“core”. Geotextile fabric is included under the filter layer to further reduce the potential for
erosion of underlying fine-grained bluff material.

A riprap revetment is distinguished from an armor stone revetment in that riprap is more
widely graded. Stone armor is usually specified with a very narrow range of sizes.

FILTER DESIGN

A filter is a transitional layer of gravel, small stones, or fabric placed between the
underlying soil and the structure. The filter prevents the migration of the fine soil particles
through voids in the structure, distributes the weight of the armor units to provide more
uniform settlement, and permits relief of hydrostatic pressures within the soils. A filter
should be used where the riprap is placed on non-cohesive material subject to significant
subsurface drainage, such as where the water-surface level frequently fluctuates, or in an
area of high groundwater level.

The left side of the inequality in is intended to prevent piping through the filter, the center
portion provides for adequate permeability for structural bedding layers, and the right
portion provides a uniformity criterion.

Propose to provide a geotextile between filter layer and the soil surface of the bottom and
then it can be neglect the left part of the equatin no. 07 since soil particle may not come out
through the geotextile. Providing of middle part of the filter layer should be doe as follows.
