Ingles Monologue
I’ve divided my presentation/speech/monologue/ into three/four main parts.
Example: Are children and teenagers watching too much TV these days?
Remember that when you ask a rhetorical question you don’t have to answer it, it’s
just used to make the audience think and make your topic more interesting.
Interesting facts
Examples: Let me tell you what happened to me…/ Suppose…/ Imagine…/ Say…
(=imagine)
Problems to think about
Examples: Suppose you wanted to…/ Imagine you had to… / What would be your
first step?
3) INTRODUCING A POINT
First of all, I would like to point out…
Speaking of…
In addition to that…
Moreover, …
Furthermore, …
Finally, …
It is a fact that…
I feel that…
In my opinion, …
As I see it…
In my view…
As far as I know…
Just to give you the main points again, … (en resumen, resumiendo)

Letter/email of complaint
(INTRODUCTION)
(MAIN BODY)
Firstly, the product I was given was not the model I had asked for. The new X-401
calculator was demonstrated to me by the sales assistant, and I agreed to buy
it. However, on unpacking my purchase, I saw that I had been given the smaller X-
201 model instead.
Furthermore, this calculator was much cheaper than the model I requested and
paid for. It did not have many of the features I needed and was much more basic
than the one I was shown to begin with.
To make matters worse, I was deeply offended by the behaviour of the sales
assistant when I went back to the shop to complain. He was not only impolite, but
also unhelpful. He refused to contact the manager when I asked to speak to him
about the incident.
(CONCLUSION)
As you can imagine, I am extremely upset, I must insist on a full refund, in addition
to a written apology from the local manager, or else I shall be forced to take further
action.
Yours faithfully,
Caroline Adams

En azul os señalo las fórmulas para utilizar a la hora de escribir “an email/letter of
complaint”.
texto formal.
Linkers: Firstly, However, Furthermore, To make matters worse, not only…but also
Pasivas: I was given, I had been given, I was deeply offended by.
Observar también que “writing” (I am writing to express…) se escribe con una sola
Cleft sentences.
Ejemplo: What I like most about Spain is the weather / it’s the grammar that I
have more difficulty with in English.
Participle clauses.
Ejemplo: I used to play in the park when I was a child / I would cook desserts with
my grandmother when I was a child / I am used to getting up early in the
morning / I couldn’t get used to getting up before 6.

spend more time with your family / I had kown, I wouldn’t have visited her when
she was ill / If I had studied more English when I was a child, I would speak fluent
English now.
Inversiones con condicionales.
Ejemplo: Had I known you were so tired, I wouldn’t have called you = inversión
con 3ª condicional.
Inversiones con adverbios negativos.

Ejemplo: The more you study, the more doubts you have / the less traffic, the less
contamination.
por ejemplo, education, technology, globalisation, climate change and global
warming, fashion, immigration, television, sport, social networking sites, healthy
lifestyle and diet, politics, etc.
No utilizamos contracciones: I am, I have, do not, cannot, did not, etc.
que te ayudaría a demostrar tu buen nivel, por ejemplo: probably + will / be
likely / may, might, could, etc.
Opinion de expertos:
1. Some experts claim that…
Opinión de la gente:
1. According to people´s belief,…
4. People have been debating the principles of beauty for thousands of years
Seem / Appear:
1. Technology appears/ seems to be playing an important role in children’s
eductation
2. It truly turns out necessary to make the most of that experience (resulta
5. There are said to be many people living in poverty (Se dice que hay mucha
gente viviendo en la pobreza)
3. No one would dispute the fact that… = nadie discutiría el hecho de que…
7. During the last fifty years there has been a considerable debate over…
9. This can be proved (un)true = esto puede comprobarse que (no) es verdad
10. There can be little that worries parents more than discovering their children
2. As a way of example, …
ADVERBIOS:
1. Undoubtedly
2. Conversely
3. Additionally
4. Curiously enough
5. Accordingly
6. Dramatically
7. Drastically
8. Enormously
9. Reportedly
10. Severely
The aims of this report are to… (si queremos añadir más de un objetivo)
I hope that the plan outlined in this report meets with your approval…
I hope that the recommendations outlined in this report will receive your
serious consideration.
(puntos fuertes), limitations, etc.
While some of the people I interviewed like the leisure actitivies in our
school, others do not…
– The 15% of students interviewed claimed that the trip to Oxford and Cambridge
did not appeal to them, whereas the 85% found both outings very enriching.
– 70% of a sample of 300 cinema-goers complain about the price of the tickets,
which is claimed to be really high.
Posibles estructuras:
It would be a good idea to…
We suggest/propose that + S + V + C.
We suggest/propose + ing…
11. Conectores/ linkers.
LOCATION:
1. It stands on a + place (a peaceful area, a square, …) = esto lo podemos
utilizar para expresar “it is located”.
3. Be walking distance from + place = the hotel is walking distance from the
beach.
ADJECTIVOS:
mesmerising (fascinante) / spacious / magnificient / superb / luxurious /
delightful (encantador) / unexpected (inesperado) / far-fetched (inverosímil,
improbable, poco convincente) / implausible (inverosímil, improbable, poco
EXPRESIONES:
1. Negative adjective + to say the least = disappointing, to say the least =
ayudarnos”. Ejemplo: the receptionist should have gone out of his/her way to
help us.
3. Be its big selling point = ser el gancho comercial = the location is its big
6. It isn’t quite up to the same high standards = no estar al mismo nivel que
dirías: the teatre, however, isn’t quite up to the same hight standars.
8. Be worth the wait = merecer la pena la espera = this film has been worth
the wait.
9. Be good value for money vs be poor value for money = buena relación
calidad-precio, para hablar de restaurantes. Si es lo contrario, no tener buena
relación calidad-precio, entonces utilizamos poor, en lugar de good.
14. Tick all the right boxes = cumplir todos los requisitos para ser un éxito.
15. Judge a book by its cover (idiom) = juzgar por las primeras impresiones
ADVERBIOS DE OPINIÓN:
1. Amanzingly enough = sorprendentemete.
estamos contando. Son oraciones que empiezan por what, all, the person who, the
thing that, the place where, the reason why, the last time, etc.
1. What I liked most was… lo que más me gustó fue…
7. The reason why I ordered another beer was… = la razón por la que pedí otra
cerveza fue…
8. It was the dessert that they charged me extra for = fue el postre por lo que
dar calidad a tu writing, y entonces utiliza ése.
+ noun = Because of the rain (NOUN), we didn’t go out = debido a la lluvia,
no salimos.
+ verb in ing = due to having focused on her studies for so long, she lost
contact with her friends = por haberse centrado en sus estudios tanto tiempo,
ella perdió el contacto con sus amigos.
+ the fact that + Subject + Verb + Complement = owing to the fact that the
flight had been delayed, I was forced to sleep at the airport = debido a que el
“tha fact that”.
para que sepas que ésto no se puede hacer: due to he was tired, he went to bed
early = INCORRECTO porque tenemos una oración, he was tired, y justo delante
La oración correcta sería: due to the fact that he was tired, he went to bed
early.
En el caso de “on the grounds that”, como la misma estructura incluye “that”,
después debemos poner la oración, porque that introduce oraciones. Ejemplo: on
the grounds that she hadn’t been promoted, she decided to leave the company =
I would rather stay in. Despite that, I wouldn’t say no to his invitation.
It’s difficult to find a job in this country. Nevertheless, I would not emigrate
if I were offered one in a foreign country.
Debéis intentar sorprender a vuestro profesor/
si utilizamos “in my view”, o “to my mind” o cualquier otro, puede que se nos
Ejemplos:
In my view, the situation will not improve.
To my mind, that film includes too much violence for children to see it.
The way I see it, measures should be taken if they really want to tackle the
problem.
positivamente. Ejemplos:
As far as climate change is concerned, experts claim it should be a current
Unidas.
In terms of homework, many parents do not agree on the idea of giving too
Como vemos, de in order to
tenemos variaciones, según lo que pongamos detrás. Os explico esto.
In order to + infinitive = In order to be promoted, you need to speak English
So as to + infinitive = I will not tell him the truth so as not to offend him =
introduce delante de to, y lo mismo sucede con in order to.
All things considered, we will focus on the way to spend our money =
coma e in addition to va seguido de un sustantivo. Ejemplos:
I was required a degree and in addition, English and French = me pidieron
una carrera y además, inglés y francés.
Para expresar “aunque” tenemos estos cuatro. En significado, éstos tres significan
lo mismo que “in spite of” y “despite”, la forma es diferente, ya que éstos, salvo
Even though we knew they wouldn’t come to our wedding, we invited them
ellos: despite and in spite of
Ejemplos:
According to researchers, more money is necessary if we want new vaccines
Ejemplos:
To my knowledge, she has been sent to another city for work = según lo
As far as I can remember, they are getting married soon = por lo que yo
Ejemplo:
Last but not least, don’t forget to lock the door when you leave = y por
14. CONVERSELY
It rained heavily. Thus, they decided to have the party indoors = Llovío mucho, por
tanto, ellos decidieron hacer la fiesta dentro.
