GRAMMAR

despite-although-even-though-and-though
We use linking words to join ideas together when we're talking or writing. Sometimes we want
to link two ideas that are different from each other (for example, one is a positive idea and one is
a negative idea) or we want to link one idea to another one which is surprising or unexpected.
We can use linking words like 'however', 'although' and 'despite' to do this.
1.My kids have a lot of fun in winter, ... (in addition/ for instance/ moreover) they enjoy playing
snowballs.
2.When we go to Austria, we like skiing ... (as well as/on the whole/as a result) just walking.
3.And ... (in brief/whereas/in conclusion) I would like to thank all our guests for coming.
4.If we leave right now, we could ... (still/while/although) catch the train.
5.It is a cheap and, ... (in spite of/moreover/unlike), effective way of learning French.
Task 3. Fill in the gaps
READING
Pre-reading task: Think of as many words as possible related to the theme “Active and
passive relaxation . What do you know about the topic? Do you prefer active or passive
activities?
Active Relaxation
I know ‘active relaxation’ sounds a bit like an oxymoron but it’s referring to relaxation
which you actually have to be engaged in, like a yoga class, taking 30 minutes to unwind in a
hot bath, meditating, concentrating on deep breathing, going for a walk- whatever it is that
makes you feel zen afterwards. For me it doesn’t involve sticking on the box, slumping on the
couch and watching trash TV while checking my iphone/ ipad every 60 seconds, I end up
feeling more hyped up after that then beforehand!
Therefore when I’ve had a stressful day I’m now trying (trying being the operative word
here!) to set aside some ‘active relaxation’ time by getting on my yoga mat, going for a walk or
doing a Chakra Cleans (Ha! How ‘woo woo’ does that sound?! I’ll tell you more about it
another time!) and stabilise my system… before I get stuck into that bottle of wine and
Kardashian reruns!!

While-listening Exercise
Listen the text and put these events in order
-The only people who travelled then were rich, and they were called travelers. I guess tourism
started in the late 60s and early 70s when airplane travel became cheap.
-Tourism has changed a lot over the past few decades. It is actually quite a new thing. It
probably didn’t exist fifty years ago. The idea of foreign travel suddenly became very popular
with millions.
-The number of tourists is also rocketing. Millions of people from Russia, India and China are
now taking vacations. Tourism really is making the world a global village. I’m not sure if this
is a good or a bad thing.
-Everyone wanted their two weeks of sun in the summer. Tourism today is a multi-billion-
dollar industry. There is hardly a corner of the Earth untouched by tourism.
Post listening tasks.
4. Tourism really is making the world a global village - how do you understand this idea?
