Inverted pendulum

The inverted pendulum is known to be one of the most important and classic problems of the
control theory. It is an unstable and non-linear control.

The inverted pendulum is a servo mechanism consisting of a carriage on which a freely rotating
pendulum is mounted. The carriage is controlled by a servo motor and its main function is to apply
forces to the pendulum

Project Experience

Simulations are usually good tools for modelling a system whose analytical solution can become
too complex by not approximating it to a linear model and considering all the effects involved in
the studied phenomenon. It is necessary to have a certain understanding of what mathematical
models of systems can say and the correct knowledge of software tools to ensure that the
simulated results correspond to the theoretical estimates.

Purpose of the project

Understanding the basic operation of a control system that did not itself have any control over its
non-linear behavior. Becoming familiar with system modelling and simulation techniques through
a relatively basic system that is well known in the academic area, in addition to the
approximations that can be made in particular cases, such as when assuming that the movement
of the pendulum rod varied at very small angles, thus introducing the concept of linearization
through simplifications.
