BSPL Insulated and Skin Effect Heated Pipeline

This project was a part of the development by Cairn Energy India Ltd. (OWNER) of the Rajasthan Block RJ-
ON-90/1 in the State of Rajasthan, India. The Mangala Oil field is located approximately 35 km North East of
Barmer. Within this area several discoveries have been made largest being the Mangala field in north, other
fields in the north include Aishwariya and Bhagyam and there is potential for tie-ins to Saraswati and
Raageshwari in the South.
JP Kenny Ltd. was contracted by the OWNER to prepare a FEED study for the crude oil export pipeline from
the central processing facility (CPF) at the Mangala field developments in Rajasthan, India to the Gujarat
coast.
The crude oil pipeline is 24” in diameter and carbon steel, depth of burial is on average of 1.0m cover and at
0
maximum flow the pipeline will carry 150,000 barrels of waxy crude. The pipeline is SECT heated to circa 75 C
maintenance temperature. Total length: 584.6KM (approx) CPF Mangala Field to Viramgam (in Ahmedabad
district) and Viramgam to Salaya (in Jamnagar district).
The pipeline was insulated by Perma-Pipe through factory application of Polyurethane Foam Insulation on the
carrier pipe which has been previously protected with an anti-corrosion coating of Fusion bonded Epoxy (FBE)
that incorporated an outer layer of rough coat. The carrier pipe also had two 1” Skin Effect Current Tracing
(SECT) system pipes welded longitudinally along the length of the 24” pipe.

In general, the materials and application was in accordance with EN 253 and comprised of pre-metered PU
foam spray applied to the carrier pipe at the thickness specified below and an outer jacket of HDPE spirally
applied by side extrusion. The minimum thickness of the PU foam was 90 mm measured from the carrier pipe
outer surface and the thickness of the HDPE casing was 5.0 mm.
