TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE

These translations and transcriptions, of which the Sokuseki Katsuyō Ninjutsu Kiai-jutsu Hiden text is a part of, were
produced in the interests of the American Federation of Jujutsu. Any party or person is free to avail themselves of a
copy of this text or any other found therein. It would be appreciated if you would acknowledge the AFJ in doing so.

As always, we used the blue font color to make further distinction between the actual body of the text and this
Translator's Preface (as well as any Translator Notes.)

It was necessary to include a Translator's Preface due to the case facts of this kind of text, the sort of books that we’ll
be adding and have already added to the Collection so far. These sorts of texts are handbooks on various forms of the
necessary Hōjutsu (補術 or, 防術 or, 方術) “Auxiliary artifice”. The Hōjutsu are a series of various minor arts that are
integral and inalienable to Jujutsu and Goshin-jutsu. Collectively together, with the principle artifices, they help make
up the entirety of Jujutsu and Goshin-jutsu. One really cannot hope to become proficient at, or master, the art of Jujutsu
and Goshin-jutsu without having a fair knowledge of the Auxiliary artifice necessary the occasion. Given the actual
objective of the Library Collection of Shihan Weymouth is to provide both a General Practitioner and a Master
Practitioner Handbook and Scroll set, one really must have some number of texts on these Hōjutsu. Obviously then,
that explains why certain kinds of texts like these had to appear in the Collection.

To discuss this immediate text, the Sokuseki Katsuyō Ninjutsu Kiai-jutsu Hiden, it was written by the same author as
the Karate (or, ‘mute’) Goshin Hijutsu, that being Buyōken Kensai. Like several of the other books made at the Turn-
of-the-Century, the Japanese language found in the text is NOT always entirely inconsistent with 19th and early 20th
Century Japanese, but at times does seem to be overlapped with that later form of the language. The passages of the
text come largely through Adaptive Quotation of older source material, but otherwise, as a representative of the
materials and literary traditions of the parent schools and other relevant sources on the subject matter, it is highly
reliable. How do we know this is a certain fact about the text? There are words and phrases commonly used in the text
that would never appear, or never appear in those forms, in the Japanese language of the late 19th and early 20th
Century. Some of these come, in fact, from the Sino-Japanese Classics dated between 1400-1785. They are actually
Old Chinese language as it gets used by the Japanese. The text has drawn upon some generalised writings such as are
held in common within Japanese Budo and Jujutsu, specifically of such subject matter as Kiai-jutsu, Aiki No Jutsu and
also Ninjutsu (we will need to discuss in this Preface what definition(s) the text is using for ‘ninjutsu’.). When
expressing the tenets of some of it's sections, the text we have here (unlike some of the other texts in the Collection)
makes good use of terminology native to the artifice. Terminology and sub-terminology is a “must have” because it
helps reveal the structure and content of the artifice itself. So that helps us to understand the context of this particular
text.

THE DEFINITION OF THE WORD ‘NINJUTSU’
Some of what will be said here might surprise some people, especially on the subject of the relationship of Aiki No
Jutsu to what is being called Ninjutsu. To begin with, most usually, when encountered in relationship to Bujutsu, Budō
and Goshin-jutsu, the word ninjutsu (忍術) is largely equal to the term kenjutsu (剣術) “sword arts”. But even then, it
is practically a Hōjutsu derivative form of the word kenjutsu that really, more than anything else, means “the Art of
Persevering by the Sword”. The associative term ninja (忍者) is similar, it usually has the same force of meaning as the
word kenja (剣者) “swordsman”, but most correctly means “One who Perseveres by the Sword” . So the first and most
common definition is the same as kenjutsu, “swordsmanship” Secondary definitions of the word ninjutsu ( 忍 術 )
involve the Art of Escape and Evasion. When encountered as such, it would commonly be translated as “Art of Self
Concealment” and usually lists items consistent with the Art of Escape and Evasion, as would be useful to a soldier, for
example. Another secondary definition is as the Art of Sabotage-in-assassination, this incarnation most usually
integrates the definition of Self concealment in hopes of keeping the intended victims fully ignorant of the identity of
their pursuer. Tertiary definition include ninjutsu ( 忍 術 ) as a form of magic or paramilitary sorcery. In some cases,
under this definition, the word ninjutsu ( 忍 術 ) means “Stage magic” and the associative term ninja ( 忍 者 ) means
“Stage magician”. When reverting back to the Paramilitary arts, a form of deceptive magic tricks used in conjunction
with armed and unarmed combat techniques to defeat an opponent. May begin to resemble, or revert back fully into
ninjutsu ( 忍 術 ) as “Art of Sabotage-in-assassination” Further tertiary definitions include usage of Buddhist
terminology which, on the surface, seems unrelated to any of these other definitions. Namely, in that the term ninjutsu
(忍術) and ninpō (忍法) refers to “Persevering as a Buddhist or Shinto-Buddhist”, remaining Buddhist and Japanese no
matter what. Combined together with the term Intonjutsu ( 隠 遁 術 ) or similar of the jutsu artifice, under Buddhist
definitions it means “Hiding oneself away (at a remote position) for the purpose of in depth studies of Buddhist literary
tradition”.
Then there are various incarnations of the term ninjutsu (忍術) that combine two or more of all the definitions. In a text
like the Ninjutsu Kiaijutsu Hiden, some form of this intercombination will often be evidenced. Often more than one
form of it.
A lesser known definition and associative context of the word ninjutsu (忍術) that we will discuss here is actually why
this book exists and seemingly links the art of Kiai-jutsu to the art of Ninjutsu. In some contexts the word ninjutsu (忍
術) and the word aiki (no) jutsu are completely inter-changeable. They are the same word and the same artifice. That is
why there are so many older Japanese Handbook (dated from 1845-1935) that list and group Kiai-jutsu and Ninjutsu
together. This is mainly owed to the definition of Aiki-jutsu as “thwarting an enemy attack (against your person or
group) by escaping off into a remote mountain ravine or remote coast-line”. Ninjutsu, under the definition of “the Art of
Escape and Evasion”, would obviously provide the connection that produces an inter-changeability between the words
Aiki-jutsu and Ninjutsu.
• Perhaps surprisingly, the various ‘alternate’ definitions of the word ninjutsu, even when inter-combined, still come
to apply within the context and conduct of this form of Aiki no jutsu:
• Aiki-jutsu application of ninjutsu escape and evasion tactic to thwart an enemy attack or arrest by exiting
early (thus forestalling them). Using Hensō-jutsu techniques changing your appearance and dress to dissuade
easy recognition so that you could escape to the safety of the remote position. Later, sneaking back down the
same way to carry out acts of sabotage (ninjutsu), making it harder for the pursuant to continue pursuing you.
This is all expressed as the conduct of Aiki-jutsu.

AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT SUBJECT
In the text of the Budō Hiketsu Aiki No Jutsu, which was placed in our Library Collection back in 2016, it describes
Aiki no jutsu as being an umbrella name and artifice, there being several arts which are all called ‘aikijutsu’ (but are not
always written with the same kanji, so the name meaning is not always the same.) These various sub-forms of Aiki no
jutsu are described as smaller umbrellas sitting under the main umbrella canopy (because of their commonality of usage
and direct connection to the main artifice). Whereas other of these artifice, as an umbrella, are siting well outside the
main umbrella being that they have far less direct relationship to the main artifice itself. The practitioner is said to reach
out from under the main umbrella and pull any of them he wants in under the main umbrella to make temporary use of
it. Why were umbrellas used to describe it? Umbrellas are used to shield oneself from the heat of the sun (hot episodes
in life) and to shield oneself from storm winds and rain (troubling times). Ninjutsu, similarly, is described as having the
same structure by the Japanese. Given the inter-changeable nature of the terms ninjutsu and aiki-jutsu, one thinks that
it’s obvious as to why? And obviously, some “umbrellas” actually belong to the ‘Ninjutsu’ main umbrella which, in the
course of the conduct of Aiki no jutsu, can itself be brought into full play (along with all its sub-umbrellas.) In texts like
the Sokuseki Katsuyō Ninjutsu Kiai-jutsu Hiden here, one sees direct and indirect references to this exchanging trade-
out, all through the text.

What else could one say about the text of the Sokuseki Katsuyō Ninjutsu Kiai-jutsu Hiden that would be relevant? Well,
the text is an expanded edition of an earlier text (written around 1915) originally entitled slightly different as: Ninjutsu
Kiai-jutsu Hiden Sokuseki Katsuyō. When comparing the two texts, it becomes apparent that the first was heavily
rewritten and then expanded (they almost seem to be two different texts). The text commonly uses the word Aiki (no)
jutsu (合氣(之)術) under the lesser known pronunciation Gōki (no) jutsu (same written characters: 合氣(之)術). Many
people don’t know that it is pronounced either way: Aiki (no) jutsu or Gōki (no) jutsu. You might ask, is there any real
difference in meaning between the two pronunciations? Yes and no, it all depends upon the context in which the word
was used. For example, the word Kongōki (混合気) in which the word ‘aiki’ has the pronunciation of ‘gōki’. This word
is usually used as a mechanical and chemical term denoting “admixture or infusion of air/oxygen/gaseous chemical to a
chemical or substance, especially fluid chemicals or substances” (such as the “air-fuel mixture” in an engine.) The term
is a contraction of Kongō (混合) “(fluid) admixture” + Gōki (合気), contracted to avoid unnecessarily doubling the
character and syllable gō (合). In this example, Gōki (合気) has the definition of “something in a gaseous state that is
admixing (with something else)”. WHEN USED in Kiai-jutsu type descriptions, for such purposes as would interest us,
the term Kongōki (混 合気 ) means “the admixturing and effects of (various) spirit/mood or cadence (especially in a
densely packed grouping of people)” And perhaps forestalling or escaping by use of such phenomenon. (This comes by
way of the verbal form of the construct Kongō (混合) as Komi-au (混み合う) “to be Crowded in; to be Packed in”) If
one wanted to speak at greater length about possible differences in meaning between Aiki-jutsu ( 合 氣 術 ) and its
pronunciation as Gōki-jutsu, it would be generally correct to say that the pronunciation as Gōki-jutsu implies that there
is an active (and at times violent) exchange going on while one is conducting the tenets of Aiki no jutsu. One could say
that, when the tenets of Aiki no jutsu are in motion, actions being taken in response to such active exchanges: that is

Gōki-jutsu. This explanation would be somewhere between generally accurate to pointedly accurate, depending upon
the literary context in which the term Gōki-jutsu (合氣術) had actually occurred in. Please bear in mind that books
like this one were written to assist practitioners in learning possible ways to make “immediate practical usage” of
Ninjutsu and Kiai-jutsu. It makes some sense then, that the Gōki-jutsu (合氣術) incarnation of Aiki-jutsu was included,
since their would certainly be a fundamental difference between the implementation of Aiki no jutsu during times of
direct active exchange as opposed to when there really is no such exchange occurring.
• It might surprise some people, but schools such as the Yōshin Ryū, Tenjin Shinyō Ryū, Kitō Ryū, Kiraku Ryū,
Araki Ryū and etc etc ALL THESE hold as integral and inalienable such elements of Ninjutsu as we have been
discussing in this preface. Such as are of the order describing a relation between Ninjutsu and Kiai-jutsu. Some
of them do not commonly list the items in their curriculum.
• There are several books in the Japanese National Diet Library that clearly, in their contents as a book,
spell this out rather clearly. Almost all of them use this Ninjutsu-Kiaijutsu form to express it. This book,
the text of the Sokuseki Katsuyō Ninjutsu Kiai-jutsu Hiden, and the other texts in the National Diet Library,
all use the form associated with the Tenjin Shinyō Ryū and the Kitō Ryū, which is extremely important
because not all schools use the same form of the stuff (nomenclature and terminology differ somewhat, or
differ pointedly.) The texts we have included in the Library Collection of Shihan Weymouth are all of
them coming from the proper strains of schools (nomenclature and terminology as used in Early Kodokan
associative ryūha.) It all applies for many forms of Japanese and Okinawan Karate-do, Jujutsu, Aiki-
Jujutsu, Aikido and etc (in every major form, including Western ecclectric forms.)

Here in the last word of the introduction, I hope to make it perfectly clear that only linguistics and legitimate academics
was applied in the course of rendering translation and the making of these transcriptions, hoping to remain true to the
original content and feel of the Sokuseki Katsuyō Ninjutsu Kiai-jutsu Hiden text itself. This was thought best, so as to
provide a more authentic experience that is devoid of 'stained glass' colourations which offers to obscure the text's
content. I mean, namely, that one ought not to approach such important works of translation, having a biased view
caused by insistence upon interpreting things according to one's own beliefs or martial arts experiences.

來ぬ國法を以て禁じ、家憲を以て秘したる奥義であつた、聖代の今日科學の進歩と社會の推移
