(Senior) Computational Biologist/Chemist

Brightseed - San Francisco, CA

ABOUT US
Brightseed, https://brightseedbio.com/technology/, is a San Francisco-based company that believes the most
powerful answers to human health challenges come from nature, if we know how to look. Our proprietary AI is
bringing the edible plant kingdom into high resolution for the first time, discovering new plant-based micronutrients
that are scientifically-proven to help the body’s systems work at their best. We recently opened limited access to our
AI and novel discoveries to food and beverage companies, including a breakthrough plant-based micronutrient that
supports metabolic and liver health.

At Brightseed, we are committed to achieving transformative results with a team-first mentality. Above all, we seek
team members who are truth-seeking and trusting. This means we hold ourselves and each other accountable in our
quest for groundbreaking knowledge. We are also a highly collaborative team that prioritizes shared goals over
individual tasks. As such, we share workload, information and feedback generously and look out for each other’s well
being. Ultimately, we realize that achieving our purpose of improving lives through plant-based nutrition will take our
collective intelligence and efforts.

Our leadership team has a distinguished, 30+ year track record in groundbreaking scientific research and translation
of discoveries into commercially successful products.

We're thrilled to be featured as a world changing idea in Fast Company!

ABOUT YOU

You are an expert computational biologist/chemist with a passion for exploring the chemical diversity encoded in
organismal genomes and how that diversity can be harnessed for the betterment of human health. At Brightseed,
you will be responsible for building out an innovative computational platform that integrates machine learning,
metabolomics technologies, and high-throughput screening data, to elucidate the natural products space found in
major domains of life including plants, fungi, and microbes. As part of your work, you will build-out our internal
capabilities to perform metabolomics data analysis in collaboration with our chemistry team. Ultimately, your work
will result in a natural compound library and a data-mining toolkit as a crucial part of our Forager™ platform to make
novel discoveries.

In particular, you will:

Lead computational investigations that apply machine-learning approaches to in-house omics data resources,
resulting in novel natural products discoveries that enable a healthier, more nutritious food industry.
Design, develop, and implement machine-learning algorithms across a range of learning objectives, including
molecular bioactivity prediction, de novo elucidation of plant metabolomes, and metabolic network
reconstruction, among others.
Design, build, and operate data pipelines that perform core scientific analyses.
Capture, curate, and manage data sets, including creating data analysis tools and databases.
As part of a team, assist in building and maintaining the R&D computational infrastructure, including apps,
pipelines, servers, databases, and cloud services.
Integrate with the in-house chemistry and medical teams to build a seamless group spanning multiple scientific
disciplines.

During the first year at Brightseed, we would expect you to:

Develop algorithms to analyze and interpret metabolomics data generated by LC/MS and tandem MS
platforms.
Establish a machine-learning-based framework to screen for natural products with desired bioactive properties.
Build a searchable natural compound library from omics-derived data sets.
Design, build, and validate computational models of plant metabolism by integrating multi-omics data sets.

Requirements

Ph.D. in Computational Biology, Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Cheminformatics, Biostatistics,

Biophysics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or related discipline.
Proven expertise applying computational/statistical/machine learning approaches to biological investigations.
Experience handling and analyzing un-targeted metabolomics and mass spectra data is highly desirable.
Experience in metabolic reconstruction/engineering is highly desirable.
Strong collaborative and oral and written communication skills.

Additional experience with one or more of the following is a plus:

Statistics
Molecular biology
Natural product chemistry
Next generation sequencing

This role will report to the Director of Bioinformatics and is based in San Francisco.
