OBSOLESCENCE NOTICE

All DTD specifications were declared obsolescent from 1 st April 1999. All DTD 900
series approvals also lapsed at that time. The standards will no longer be updated but
will be retained as obsolescent documents to provide for the servicing of existing
equipment.

Further Guidance

The aim in declaring the specifications obsolescent is to recognise that the

documents are not being updated and thus should be used with care by both
purchaser and supplier. For example, a specification could contain valid technical
information but may also contain type approval clauses that contradict procurement
policy and/or use materials that do not comply with environmental legislation. The
obsolescent specification can still be used as a basis for a purchase provided that the
supplier and purchaser agree suitable changes to the specification within the
purchase order/contract.
For the DTD 900 system, each specification has provided an MoD approved
material and process. For these items, the declaration of obsolescence will constitute
the termination of both the extant MoD approval and the continuing MoD assessment
that had underpinned those approvals. Again, the technical content of the document
remains valid and can be used by both purchaser and supplier as a basis for a
contract but an acceptable (to the parties) approval/assessment procedure would be
required.

Aircraft Material Specification
BRASS ROD OR WIRE FOR MACHINED COMPONENTS SUBJECT TO A
RIVETING OPERATION
(Not suitable for the manufacture of rivets)
NOTE. This specification is one of a series issued by the Ministry of Aviation, either to meet a limited requirement
not covered by any existing British Standard for aircraft material or to serve as a basis for the inspection of materials
the properties and uses of which are not sufficiently developed to warrant submission to the British Standards
Institution for standardisation
1. Chemical composition
(a) The chemical composition of the alloy shall be:
Copper ... ... ... ... . . . not less than 61.0 nor more than 64.0 per cent.
Lead ... ... ... ... . . . not less than 1.0 nor more than 2.5 per cent.
Total Impurities ... ... ... ... not more than 0.5 per cent.
Zinc . . . ... ... ... ... . . . the remainder.
(b) The manufacturer shall when required supply the complete analysis of the material to the inspector.
2. Freedom from defects
(a) The material shall be free from harmful defects.
(b) Any material may be rejected for faults in manufacture, although it has been passed previously on chemical
composition and mechanical tests.
3. Selection of test samples
All rods or wires in straight lengths coils of the same diameter or width across the flats shall be grouped in
batches or parcels, and one sample shall be selected from each such batch or parcel to provide the necessary test
pieces for the mechanical tests specified in Clause 4. The size of each batch or parcel shall be as follows:
Diameter of rod or wire Maximum size of
(or width across the flats) batch or parcel
Up to and including 0.020 inch ... ... ... 56 lb.
0.021 inch up to and including 0.062 inch ... ... ... 1 cwt.
0.063 inch up to and including 0.125 inch ... ... ... 2 cwt.
0.126 inch up to and including 0.5 inch ... ... ... 3 cwt.
2 D.T.D. 627
4. Mechanical tests
The mechanical properties of the test samples selected as specified in Clause 3 shall pass the following tests
to the satisfaction of the inspector:-
(a) Bend test. The test sample shall withstand without cracking being bent through 180° over a radius equal
to the diameter of the test sample.
(b) Head forming test. The test sample shall withstand flattening cold in an axial direction without crack-
ing until the diameter of the flattened part is not less than 1.75 times the original diameter.
5. Retests
If any test sample fails to pass the bend test or head forming test specified in Clauses 4 (a) and 4(b), the inspector
shall reject the parcel or batch represented by that test piece or, at the request of the manufacturer, select for test
from the same batch or parcel two further samples; one of these shall be taken from the rod or coil from which
the original test sample was taken, unless that rod or coil has been withdrawn by the manufacturer. Test pieces
prepared from these two further samples shall pass the appropriate test specified in Clauses 4(a) or 4(b).
6. Identification
(a) Rods or wires in straight lengths of the same diameter passed by the inspector shall be made into parcels,
which shall bear a tag stamped with the mark of the inspector and such other markings as will ensure full identification
of the material.
(b) Every coil passed by the inspector shall bear a tag stamped with the mark of the inspector and such other
marking as will ensure full identification of the material.
