SWOT ANALYSIS (MIDTERM REQUIREMENT FOR PROCUREMENT MANAGEMENT FOR

CONSTRUCTION)

1. SWOT ANALYSIS FOR THE CASE STUDY OF “STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF ABACA FIBER

REINFORCED CONCRETE CONTAINING FLY ASH AND GROUND GRANULATED BLAST

FURNACE SLAG”

The study somehow addresses the needs for Additional Design Strength on Concrete. This shows how

the professionals within the industry are eager to address additional strength of concrete which will

resolve strength/design issue for construction. Important characteristic is tested and considered and

resulted into the study’s advantage. This is of great importance to support the study with an evidence

and use the result as basis for decision making and analysis of whether the study is viable or not.

However, availability of Abaca Fiber is of question since it is an indigenous material and is not

commonly available in any local area, as it is reported to have shortage of supply last 2018 by

Department of Agriculture. It also decomposes since it is a natural substance, therefore decay or its

decomposition should be studied to have a set of guidelines and timelines of maintenance and actual

percentage of the additional strength it can provide must be considered.

Though, these weaknesses are important factors, weighing its cost over benefit through an opportunity

and threat assessment. Opportunity that comes with its usage is Utilization OF Indigenous Material

Sustainability and Environmentally Friendly, Establishment of set of guidelines, timelines in

maintenance can be of great value about the study.

Threats on the other hand are the following: resistance to the new material use from the construction

sector and competition with other Industry sector that uses abaca fiber as raw material for their product

which might result to higher cost and shortage.

2. SWOT ANALYSIS FOR THE CASE STUDY OF” IMPROVEMENT IN LOW TEMPERATURE-

PROPERTIES OF RECLAIMED ASPHALT BINDER USING WASTE ENGINE OIL”

I feel it’s important to comment and campaign about issues which lead to less contamination and better-

quality of life thru recycling. This research shows its strength by having a stand to what and how

recycling of Waste Engine oil will not just be beneficial on the property of the asphalt to be restored that

helps the industry but also it does help the environment. As per my research waste engine oil is one of

the major pollutants of the world’s drinking water sources. Research, to be specific is evidence based

by being supported by factual data gathered from diff develop countries which shows how many

asphalts is milled, to better realize the quantity and how many asphalts will be recycled that will help

conserve natural resources used as raw material. To comment also on the weakness of the study itself,

the study didn’t specify if the waste engine oil will be refined or can be use as it is which, we cannot

assess the cost of using it, but nonetheless I guess that can be negligible given the benefit.

Some opportunities can be noted cited as: cleaner environment and waste reduction, to established a

health and safety guidelines for using Waste Engine Oil and additional organizational knowledge and

explore more since benefits of using is very impressive.

But given those strengths and opportunities, it should noted that used oil or waste engine oil to be

specific, is insoluble, persistent, and can contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals which comes with a

safety and health threats either during construction or after, so further studies on this and its general

effect years after should be measure and prevented.

3. SWOT ANALYSIS FOR THE CASE STUDY WORKERS’ COMPLIANCE TO HEALTH AND

SAFETY

Visible Strength of study are that the researcher knows the objectives of his research and what

methodology is use and highlighted that safety regulations are in place to minimize the risk. Noted

risk shows that the industry hires unskilled workforce due to scarcity of skilled manpower within the

industry. There is also violation of workers noted even the standard is already established, that
exposure to certain unsafe acts, condition proceed to hazards, risk, injuries and worst, fatalities on

construction site.

Opportunities are training (fitted for EHS need for further improvement) and have a specific

standard base on the type and location of project as a sub-clause of OSHA Standard

Weaknesses may either established treats economic and social threats externally. Higher

construction cost (due to trainings and safety guidelines) and Misleading assessment (of the

violation and critical concern to focus in terms of safety since the type of construction and location is

not define on the study) to mention few.
