BASIC VENTILATOR MODES

All modern ventilators work on the principle of positive pressure ventilation

Two major modes of ventilation

• Volume Control

• Set volume of air

• Pressurized air into lungs

• Pressure required will change from patient to patient & breath to breath

• Pressure Control

• Set pressure delivered

• volume of air delivered will change from patient to patient & from breath to breath

Volume Control Mode

Ensure pt receives set volume of air each minute.

• Settings

• Tidal volume (Vt) = Vol. of air set to be delivered with each breath.

• Freq / Resp. Rate =# of breaths per minute

• 02 conc. (Fia) = Ranges from 0.35 -1.0

(35%-100%)

• Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) = Const. pressure applied throughout expiration to
keep alveoli open At least 5cm H2O for
"physiological" PEEP
Ranges from 5-20

• Pressure support (Ps) = Push of air to help pt with breathing

Min. 8-10
Ranges 5- 20
