Machining allowances In order to make sure that all surface imperfections such ‘as decarburization, carburization, cracking, surface ‘oxidation or scaling can be removed, itis necessary to provide al rolled oF forged bar with sufficient machining allowances on the finished size Ordering exampl Finished size: 100 mm diameter Machining allowance: 6 mm Nominal size 108 mm with admissible tolerance of + 1.5/0.3 mm, i.e. ‘maximum actual size = 107.5 mm minimum actual size = 105.7 mm ‘The machining allowance takes into account the ‘admissible tolerance which guarantees that after removal ofa uniformly thick layer of material on all sides from the ‘ough size, the finished size will definitely be free of ‘material or production dependent defects, even in case of minus deviations from nominal size. Premachined components also require small machining allowances whereas finish machined products require no ‘machining allowances (except when production is followed by a subsequent heat treatment in which case an allowance for grinding and polishing should be provided) For detailed information on machining allowances and ‘admissible tolerances of BOHLER bar (rolled of forged bar; 180 ECOMAX = premachined, preground bar; Precision ground flats) please refer to our brochure No. STa91
