Online Lesson 3: Reflection and Focus on Self

Reminder: We should see localism and globalism lenses to understand how people could
interpret an event differently.
Lesson Objective:
-Understand that globalism and nationalism are not two sides. Rather they could be seen as a
spectrum
-Reflect on where our bias would lie towards these two frameworks

Vocabular:
Patriotism: supporting your country/being proud of it.
Reflection:

Localism/Nationalism
What seems to be the attractiveness and unattractiveness of Localism/nationalism?
People are attracted by localism/nationalism because they are proud of their countries/local
areas which means they also feel proud of themselves. It gathers local, or public people and
makes a strong community.

People don't like localism/nationalism because they seem selfish and closed minded and
localism/nationalism can lead people to racism. Too much is nothing than less. If they are too
much show pride and only advantage, it can make enemies around those people. Especially,
localists/nationalist insult the other countries/local areas because they think they are the best.

-What are your feelings towards localism/nationalism?

It’s good to feel proud of their countries, but if pride becomes conceit, it’s not a good way to
phrase their countries. Localism/nationalism can lift the spirits when they are in trouble.
Therefore, I think localism/nationalism is good if it’s not too deep and dark.

Globalism:
What seems to be the attractiveness and unattractiveness of Globalism?
People like globalism because these days, the world is connected and does its own part. Some
countries are poorer, so they need a lot of help.

People don’t like globalism because they are afraid that politics might care less about their own
countries.

-What are your feelings towards globalism?

Globalism is the way that the world can live together because people take care of the world
wide not just only their countries/local areas. It also makes us realize that the worlds are
connected to work together.

Conclusion:
On the scale here: Put down a mark using the capital letter “I” to show where you would be on
this spectrum:
Completely←---------------------------------------I----------------------------------------------------->Completely
Localist Globalist
(My country matters the most) (world is more important than country)

Explain your choice on where you marked yourself on the spectrum/scale:

I feel I’m little likely to nationalist because whenever my South Korea has done a great job, I feel
proud of my country. I also mostly use samsung products which I think samsung is the best
company.
