In 1973, the State of Colorado adopted the four day school week since its origin in 1936.
The implementation of four-day school week was primarily due to conservation of
energy and reduction of operating costs. Benefits of four day school week were later
discovered with the exception on the academic performance of students. The study was
conducted to investigate and assess the difference between the performance of
students on four day school week and the typical five day school week in areas of
reading, writing, and mathematics.

The overall results statistically recorded that there was no significant difference between
the two systems except for one area which is writing in the primary level. The study
concludes that the decision to shift from five day to four day school week has high
impact in the stakeholders in terms of cost reduction and no significant impact on the
student performance. The study was backed up by another study conducted on different
year which resulted to a similar conclusion of little dif
