These calendars are created to help you and your child get ready for kindergarten. Please have them complete the
activity for each day. If your child already knows that concept, have them work on something he/she does not
know how to do, such as counting to 100 by ones and tens or beginning to write a complete sentence. You can also
go to www.corestandards.org to explore all the standards we will be learning this year.
When writing their first and last name, please make sure he/she begins each name with a capital letter and
complete their name with lowercase letters. For example, John Smith.. Please do not have them use all capital letters
and he/she needs to learn to write the name that is on their birth certificate.

In kindergarten, students are expected to write about a topic independently using complete sentences. When writing, have
your child practice using the sounds they know to write words. For example, your child might want to write the sentence,
“I see a dog.” Their sentence might look like, “I ce a d.” Writing down the sounds they hear is called inventive spelling.
Students usually use this form of spelling until they have learned many sight words and the correct sound spellings for
each sound. Have your child practice writing simple words by following these steps. 1. Say the word. 2. Say the word slowly
so you can hear each sound. 3. Write down the sounds you hear.
Example: 1. Say “dog”. 2. Say the word slowly, /d/ /o/ /g/. 3. Write down the sounds you hear, dog.

Your child has finished their first week of school! This week was full of new experiences, new friends, and new
ideas. Here are a few things to do every day to help your child be successful in kindergarten:
23 Ask specific
19 questions about
20 your child’s day.
21 “What was your
22 favorite thing 23
you learned today?
24 What
friends did you play with today? What made you laugh today? Sing a song that you learned today?”
Look inside your child’s backpack/class folder for any notes that have been sent home.
Read with your child every night and discuss the book. So many adventures can happen in 15 minutes with
