Activities Undertaken

I have joined AIBL On 1st February 2020 and on the 1stday my duties and responsibilities
were to be introduced with the officers of the bank. I got to know some information about
AIBL. My placement of internship was in AIBL Banani Branch in Foreign Trade
Department. From that day my internship started and would end after three months later. I
have worked under General Banking and Foreign trade banking of the Branch, where all the
employees of the bank were generous and helpful in providing information. Every work was
new for me. Most of the reports prepared here on manual basis and then got converted in the
digital process. I was almost new to work with the digital way. Though as it was 1 st day the
process was difficult, I learned practical implementation and more from here. It was my first
working experience in a bank and the working environment was very inspiring to me. During
my internship, I tried to give my hundred percent to the organization in order to learn and
prove myself. I gave my best efforts to make contribution on the well fare of my
organization.

2.1 Work-Related Activities

Foreign Trade one of the major section of AIBL in Banani Branch. I am worked in this

world renowned organization to bring foreign remittance from the Bangladeshi residences
who are major contributors to generate national revenue. International division has been
providing maximum efforts to the functioning of treasury operation.

of the Nation’s Economy.

3.1 Identified in the Organization
 Unorganized Working Environment: The working environment is not well
organized in this branch. Furniture and other necessary tools of foreign exchange
division are not properly arranged so that it becomes difficult for the clients to share
their information.
 Lack of Technical Support: AIBL does not provide technical support to personnel
who are placed for intern.
 Less Logistic Support: AIBL has very limited number of printer and supplies. All
most every day, they have been wasting time for printing the important documents.
 Lack of Information sharing: They do not share all information with me about some
important documents of Foreign Exchange Department rather than they are so much
helpful.
 Low Number of ATM Booth: AIBL ATM Booth facility does not available
anywhere in Dhaka city so that customers are expressed dissatisfaction on it.
 Lack of Motivation: The organization does not provide any extra incentive for
showing extraordinary performance. Therefore, the tendency of showing better skills
does not exist.
 Client Satisfaction: Service of Al Arafah Islami Bank is not satisfactory. When client
comes employee cannot execute their work in short time with efficiency. Client don`t
satisfied the employees work.
 Monitoring senior: In this bank chain of command is very weak. I have seen hardly
that the seniors are monitoring the work of juniors.

3.2 Academic Preparation

In My BBA program I had completed many academic courses. My Major was Accounting.
Financial organization was the best place for my internship. Internship at Al Arafah Islami
Bank Limited lets me to compare real life work with academic courses. I have got both some
relevance and absence of preparation. Like Foreign exchange mechanism was my missing
knowledge form the university. There have not any mismatch between assigned tasks and
other operational functions of the organization with my academic preparation.

As an intern student I found academic mismatches to corporate work experience. The

Internship program is an essential component of everybody’s Academic Life. Although
learners obtain distinct experience by working distinct setting, they certainly have the

13
opportunity to test their interests, create excellent connections as suggestion, obtain
understanding about the specific filed they wish to apply to, thus ensuring the learners have
developed abilities and expertise in a specific filed along with substantial data for their
curricula. Given below re some missing knowledge and skills from my Internship
perspective:

 Lack of work idea in organizational field.

 The University always emphasizes on the theoretical knowledge and for this the
practical things need to be introduced in the university for the students.
 Excel based official works and data management is a vital part for corporate world.
In any case, we infrequently get appropriate learning opportunity about Excel.
 In this modern world computer is the most important part in the office work. For this
there need to be more practical lab classes for the students that needs to be
incorporated in the relevant course works.
 I was involved with a lot of theoretical course job during my academic research. I
anticipated some of my theoretical understanding to be related to the Bank’s practical
job. But I discovered out that there were very distinct theoretical knowledge and
practice knowledge.
 In the Banking sector of AIBL. I found many terms that are unknown to me as AIBL
follow the Islamic terms that I could not properly apply my academic knowledge in
such kind of Banking activities. There are many Names, Terms, Concepts and
Practices that are unknown to me. As an Accounting Major student I had less chance
to work in any finance related sections.

14
4.1 Lesson Learn from the Organization
I have learnt so many valuable things from my internship. I started my internship program in
Al Arafah Islami Bank Limited, Banani Branch. At the very Beginning of My Internship day
I got the flavor of practical office environment. It was totally a new experience for me. After
starting my Internship program first, I was appointed in general Banking Department. My
first responsibility was to open account. I have learnt how to open account, account opening
eligibility, procedure etc. After that I worked in remittance section. I got the experience of
working with Western Union, Money Gram, demand draft etc. I have learnt the posting
process in software and register book. After three weeks I have started working in foreign
exchange Department. Foreign exchange department is the busiest department of Al-Arafah
Islami Bank Limited. Form there I have learnt so many important things. I learnt how to open
LC. I learnt how to check and give posting of the Import and export Documents. The stuffs
of AIBL supported me much. They always gave me important advices and answered in my
queries. I think these experiences will help me in my professional life.

Internship program is aimed at combining academic knowledge with practical life. It helps a
student to gather knowledge though his work experiences. It is a different prospect of my life
to get real life experience in the corporate world. During my work I have to do lots of thing
that’s helped me to learn different thing that only books cannot give. I learn several lessons
from my internship program that are given below:

 Foreign Trade
Foreign Exchange implies all deposits, credits, balance payable, drafts, T.Cs, bill of
exchange, L / C etc. from one nation to another are included in the return of currency
in terms of products. This is the world's most well-known and well-organized
company uniform. All foreign exchange transactions in Bangladesh are subject to
Bangladesh Bank exchange control regulation. One of the most Significant
Departments of AIBL's Foreign Exchange Departments. The Bank provides great
services to the clientele in foreign exchange and foreign trade activities through the
foreign correspondents mentioned above.
 Corporate culture & environment
During my internship I learned about working environment in practically. Especially I
learned about office environment of a bank. My supervisor gave me many practical
guidelines so that I can cop Foreign Exchange implies all deposits, credits, balance
payable, drafts, T.Cs, bill of exchange, L/C etc. from one nation to another are

15
included in the return of currency in terms of products. This is the world's most well-
known and well-organized company uniform. All foreign exchange transactions in
Bangladesh are subject to Bangladesh Bank exchange control regulation. One of the
most significant Departments of AIBL's Foreign Exchange departments. The Bank
provides great services to the clientele in foreign exchange and foreign trade activities
through the foreign correspondents mentioned above up with the environment easily,
for this firstly he made me comfortable in this corporate environment. I observed that
working environment at the bank is very formal and the dress code is very formal as
well. I also had to dress formally to cope up with the working environment & tie was
mandatory which I have enjoyed a lot. I also learnt how to behave with the corporate
people. I got familiar with the corporate culture. It was completely new for me.
Within few days I was coped up with their culture and manner. It is helpful for me to
know about the culture of an organization as well as gather experience. It was really a
good experience to work in the AIBL in Banani Branch.
 Time Management
In the internship program period I have learned how to manage the schedule. My
Supervisor is very punctual & he is always in time. Time management is very
important for me also. In work life I have to schedule my time properly because I
need to attend office in time. For this I need to wake up early in the morning for
getting prepared before the going to the office & mean time I have to be in the office
at 9.30 AM.
 Work Under pressure
When I was working in account opening section it was difficult to me to work with
huge pressure. Because every day a lot of people came here and want to know
different information that was related to my work so it was difficult to me to
communicate with all of them and also provide services. It helps me to learn how to
work in corporate life with work pressure.
 Uses of office equipment
I had learned the use various office equipment like photocopy machines, scanners, etc
that I don’t have any idea to use this equipment earlier in my academic life.
 Office File Management
During my internship period I have learned how to keep or record data manually.
How to ensure the effective flow of working file.

16
4.2 Lesson Learnt from the University
Southeast University provides a greater facility in student’s internship program. Here
everything is well organized. Students are notified time to time by Southeast University. Our
internship program is just for three months but its importance in academic life is very vast. I
have learnt many things from our teacher, and their lectures that really helped me to be
eligible for internship program. My supervisor also helped my much in term of preparing
report. University itself provides different guideline, report format that also helped me much
to complete my internship and report.

 Communication Skill

From my University I developed my communication skill because there was one core
course for us which is Business communication. This course teaches us how to
communicate with each other’s, how to write email in the corporate life etc.

 Utilizing Lesson in Professional Life

Every student learns something in his academic life which he/she will use it in his
professional life. During my academic learning I learned how to speak confidently,
leading and managing team & co- operate with team members, research skill and some
knowledge about the software. During our academic program I got some basic knowledge
about this software. So that’s the academic lessons an intern can use in his professional
life.

 Discipline and punctuality

My University’s strict discipline helps me to maintain bank discipline also. As I am in

corporate world so I have to maintain formal dress code and also time. So, this thing I
learn from my university internship program.

 Following the instruction

During our academic life, we followed the instruction of our course faculty members.
Also, in internship program we had to follow the instruction of both our organizational
and academic supervisor. Thus, we have got the ability to do the tasks by following the
supervisor’s instruction properly.

17
 Learning of overall Microsoft office
In our overall BBA program, there was no implementation on Microsoft excel. Not
only bank but also each and every type of business randomly use Microsoft excel and
Microsoft word. So each university gives emphasis on learning of overall Microsoft
office program to work better in future.

 Work in particular sector

Universities arrange more industrial, that’s why the students are known how the
employees work in company. This also increases the willingness of interested who
wants to work in particular sector.

 Formal Business letter & Affiliation

From the first during in internship program the students know about the formal
business letter. Lack of the knowledge regarding this they face problem. Format of
affiliation is also included in this topic. So universities give priority to learn about the
formal business letter and formal affiliation report. It should include any subject.

 Arrange seminar or workshop

Many professionals are highly interested to share their knowledge and experiences
with the interested students. In this case universities step forward to arrange seminar
or workshop where successful professionals from prominent or leading corporation in
the country.

18
5.1 Summary

Most of the people in our country have a bad impression about Islamic Banking operations
regarding indirect generation of interest, which means no difference between investments of
Islamic Bank’s loan/credit/advance of conventional banks for this reason. They are not much
interested to investment with Islamic Bank because majority of our people have no proper
knowledge about the activities of Islamic banking as well as its investment mechanisms.
AIBL through its aggressive progress and continuous success has, by how, earned the
reputation of being one of the leading private sector banks of the country. The bank has
shown hard line progress in this important sector. Main items of import are machinery,
garments, fabrics and accessories, ships for scrapping, rice, pharmaceuticals etc. whereas
main items of exports are jute products, readymade garments, leather, frozen fish, fertilizer
etc. AIBL’s capital adequacy, deposits, reserves, earning per share, export, import and
remittances are increasing day by day. So, no doubt AIBL is a growing profitable financial
institution. The future of Al-Arafah Islami Bank hinges, by and large, on their ability to find a
viable alternative to interest for financing all types of loans. They should recognize that their
success in abolishing interest has been only partial and they have yet to go a long way in their
search for a satisfactory alternative to interest Simultaneously, Al-Arafah Islami Bank’s need
to improve their managerial capabilities by training their personnel in Project Appraisal,
Monitoring, Evaluation and Performance Auditing.

Moreover, the future of Islamic banks also depends on developing and putting into practice
such accounting standards which provide timely and reliable information of the type that the
Islamic banks would require for profit-sharing, rent-sharing or for cost-plus financing. These
standards are yet to be developed. The Al-Arafah Islami Bank would have to work hard to
pursue their clients to accept these standards so that a reliable information base is established.

19
5.2 Recommendation
 Recommendation for AIBL

Working in AIBL was an absolute pleasure for me; from there I have learned so many
important lesions about the corporate culture. However, while doing my daily work at the
Banani Branch of AIBL. I have come to across some of the issues that I thought needed
improvement. I have included those in this recommendation section in list form so that those
issues can be given preference and sorted out soon.

 Interaction time for the interns with the supervisor need to be sufficient as students go
for internship to learn and there are many terms that are difficult. For this there
should be a fixed time so that student can interact with the supervisor and tell their
problem to get solutions from that time.

 There are many works that are irregular in AIBL. To increase efficiency the
employees need to finish their given work and after that they should move to their
other works, thus it will help to decrease the work load of the employees.
 AIBL must develop electronic banking system to moderate the service. Technology
advantage of a bank ensuring its competitive edge in the market place can only be
achieved by efficient manpower. It is market share to reduce its operating cost and to
generate new revenue.
 AIBL should Increase skilled manpower to do its financial activities more efficiently.
So that many of the employees do not have to do extra work.
 Market them as true Islami Sariah based bank to reduce misconception among people
who think they renamed interest, to profit for misleading them.
 They should also focus on the marketing aspects to let customers know about their
products and offering and more promotion should be given to attract new customer.
 The organization should give the opportunity to provide technical knowledge to the
intern. For the interns they should manage some computer related tasks, so that the
interns can also learn some banking technical system.
 In Banani Branch, there is limited staff. For this reason, sometimes employee faces
many problems. So they should recruit some more staff.
 Now a day’s world is going very fast. Now most of the banks open online customer
service system. So in order to compete in the world market they should adopt Online
Banking system.

 Recommendations for SOUTHEAST UNIVERSITY

As far as my view is concerned, Southeast University is doing their best to boost up its
student’s carrier in every way possible. Southeast University is doing excellent in terms of
helping the students to become competitive professionals and to compete. Still I want to
recommend some new improved ideas Southeast University to help students even further.

 Southeast University may make students to do internship in each year of the academic
years so that the students begin to gain experience more than just three months of
internship.
 Southeast University can focus more on the practical ways of learning than the theory
based ones.
 It would be nice if students get the liberty of internship report format.
 The university should teach some advance excel work to the students. Because excel
work is very important in an organization. So university should think about it.
 Beside the theoretical knowledge university should teach some practical works of an
organization to the student. If student get an idea about the organization work it will
be easier for them to capture the work quickly overly their internship program.
 University should provide practical activities besides theoretical studies. They should
place workshop inside different multinational Banks, Garments & others industries at
regular basis.
 University should assign some challenging works to understand the real corporate
environment and also give some practical knowledge to handle some critical situation.
 University should arrange some training programs for students to learn work
practically.
 University should add more course and sessions on Microsoft Word.
 For studying terms of Accounting all our country. This idea already applied in our
taxation course which was very helpful. It should be done in all the major courses.
 Southeast University can arrange some workshops on stock market.
