A. Forms of Medication
1. Dosage form : The final form of the medicine, e.g tablet, powder, gel, spray, etc.
2. Over-the counter
drug/medicine/OTC: A product which can be sold without the patient seeing a doctor.
3. Prescription drug : Medicine bought in pharmacy and requiring a written note from the doctor.
4. Products in the
pipeline : Future drugs, not yet on the market.
5. Aerosol : A container with a liquid that is administered in spray form
6. Drops : A very small amount of liquid that forms a round shape
7. Inhaler : A small device with medicine to breathe in through the mouth
8. Liniment : An oily liquid to rub on painful body parts to reduce pain
9. Ointment : A smooth, thick substance to rub on the skin for healing
10. Patch : A medication on material or cloth placed on the skin.
11. Pill : A small, round piece of medicine to be swallowed without chewing
12. Solution : A liquid in which another substance has been dissolved
13. Suppository : A solid medicine which melts slowly in the rectum or vagina
14. Syrup : A sweet, liquid medicine taken with a spoon or cup
15. Capsule : Medication in powder, liquid or oil form and encased by gelatin shell.
16. Caplet : Medication shaped like capsule and coated for ease of swallowing
17. Elixir : Clear fluid containing water and or alcohol, usually has sweetener added
