Explain the Problem

Answer the following questions in paragraph form.

● What is the nature of the problem?

- They burn plastic, hay bale, wheats, dead animals, and woods.
● Who is it a problem for?
- Farmers
● Where is the problem occurring?
- Mostly mountains, rural areas
● What is the cause of the problem?
- There are no recycling bins and trash pick up trucks, so they need to burn the trash.
● What effect is the problem having?
- Respiratory system.

During the smoky season, farmers and many other people burn plastic, hay bale, wheat,
dead animals, and wood. They burn them mostly mountains and rural areas because they
don’t have any recycling bins and trash pick up trucks. Therefore, they have to burn them.
The smoke from the burning trash affects our body especially, respiratory system.

Identify Target User - Ms. Ari

Identify a target user by applying brainstorming, interviewing, observing,or collecting data
from experts. Describe your target user with reference to primary or secondary research.

Ms. Ari
Teachers always need to talk to teach their students. Ms. Ari has a loud voice to make
students listen and focus on her class well. However, if she had any symptoms, especially
breathing issues, she would not be able to speak loud. Then less students would not listen
and focus on her class, so other students would not be able to study well during classes.
Therefore, we need to make an air filter to prevent her loud voice during classes.

State the Benefits of a Solution

Describe what the effects of solving the problem would be.

By installing an air filter in her classroom, she would have less possibilities to have breathing

issues that interrupts her classes.

Interview Questions for Air Filter Users

1. Have you felt any breathing or speaking problems during the smoky season?
2. Where would you like to put the air filter in your classroom?
3. How big an air filter do you want?
4. How often do you open windows?
5. Do you care about noise from the air filter (motor noise)?

EXISTING PRODUCT ANALYSIS 1: DIY USD6 Homemade Micron 0.1 Haze/ air filter In 5
Minutes

AESTHETICS: it doesn’t look good because maker CUSTOMER: APIS, people who has
just put the air filter into the fan and there are some fan
extra parts out of frame

COST: air filter $12 ENVIRONMENT: not good for the

environment because it uses a large
amount of filter for only 7 days.

SAFETY: unsafe for children because they put their SIZE: Depends on size of fan. The
finger into the fan example picture one is quite big fan

FUNCTION: filter the air. When the fan turns on, MATERIALS: fan, air filter, double side
blades push the air to the air filter and air goes tape
through the air filter and is filtered by the air filter.

environment.

SAFETY: not safe because fan is placed outside, so SIZE: small

FUNCTION: fans push the air inside the bottle and MATERIALS: PET bottle, computer

DESIGN BRIEF
Ben, Pim

Relevance - Recently, Chiang mai is in the smokey season and AQI is high everyday. People
need pure air not to have any problems in respiratory systems. We need an air purifier to
breathe clean air in the classroom. During the interview, Ms. Ari answered she had some
breathing issues during the smoky season.
General features - Based on my research about existing homemade air purifiers, I found few
things that homemade air purifiers have in common.
● The fans push the air to the air filter
● Use plastic as a body
Resources - As I mentioned in the general features, most air purifiers were made with plastics.
Plastics are easy to get and transform, so they are good material to make the main body of
the air purifier. We are going to use tissue paper as an air filter. Based on experiments during
science classes, tissue paper is the best material to filter the air. Tissue paper is also easy to
get from anywhere, so it’s easy to change the filter.
Rough process outline - I will start designing the main body of the air purifier, then place the
necessary parts like fans, filter, etc by drawing on the paper. Then prepare the material we
need and start building.
Target users - Our target user is Ms. Ari. Her classroom has windows on one side, so it’s hard
to circulate the air in a short time. She needs to open the windows for a long time to circulate
the air, but because of low quality air from outside, she can’t. Therefore, we need to make an
air purifier for her classroom. During the interview with her, she said she never opens windows
during the smoky season except when she throws water. She wants to put the air filter under
the desk.
Out come - Air purifiers will be used by many other people including Ms. Ari and it will provide
us better air during the smoky season.
