Rightsizing
the textile and

to make business
sustainable
Md. Eousup Novee

The textile and apparel industry has been enduring

profit erosion for the last couple of years. The
expanded size of factories makes them more
vulnerable. Bigger the size, the stronger the need to
feed them for survival. The rapid expansion of the
production capacity of factories shows counteracting
signals to business.

The latest impact of Coronavirus has fueled the

scenario worsens. Many factories may not survive
without the rescue package of the government, even
though the loan in the name or model of financial
ease will not be a solution. Rather, it will endanger
the existence of business in the near future due
to excessive liability. Streamlining the capacity
of apparel and textile factories is now an utmost
scientific problem to be addressed to make the
business sustainable.

The time dictates to tame the allure of expansion.

Very few companies are performing well despite the
mammoth expansion. Rightsizing of the business is
not merely required to combat the current critical
situation rather it is required even in a plain situation
as a sustainable business and investment strategy.

The textile and apparel industry is in the need of the hour of transformation. The right transformation can help the
industry to be more economically sustainable.
On 14 March 2020, a training on "Industry Transformation Scopes" took place, where many industry experts and
opinion leaders shared their experience with the young 'Transformation Leaders (TLs)'.
The experts addressed the scopes for "Setting Transformation Blueprint (STB)" in different areas of the industry.
100 TLs from Textile Talent Hunt 7th season along with around 200 experts and professionals and 20 factories will
work on the scopes to develop 100 'Practically Tested Transformation Model (PTTM)'.

Textile Today Question of the Month
Global buyers have canceled and suspended orders of readymade garment products worth US$1.98 billion
from Bangladesh till 23 March. They are not only canceling and suspending orders, but also not taking
ready goods, and so is paying. We are highly dependent on Europe and the United States for orders, and
on China for raw materials. We have seen many times to suffer our industry due to such external factors.

Why we need to be a victim of such a vulnerable global

industry, how could we reduce such shocks on our industry?

Asif Ibrahim
Director
BGMEA

We are facing a grave situation with the coronavirus. The brands are reducing their orders and are asking
to hold on to uncut fabric. And those who are producing readymade garments (RMG) are being asked
to hold their shipments as global consumption is coming to a halt. This will have serious consequences
as we see an imminent liquidity crisis which will lead to financial disruption of the manufacturing units.

President, the Board, past Presidents, industry leaders have been working relentlessly round the
clock to handle the crisis. We are contacting all the brands representatives, embassy, President of EU,
German minister. We request our buyers at least assured in taking shipment of goods that have already
been manufactured.

Corona Virus pandemic is a unique situation for our business it is a unique case for the whole world
and all the business. At this moment to reduce the impact of it we have do take a no of short term
measures first and then maybe in a month picture will be more clear, we will come to know more
about from our customers based on that we have to take some long term strategies to reduce the
impact of this kind of situation.

And finally, we will have a challenge in this tough period, but we have to look for opportunities
also in this and find out a way of survival. It will help us how to learn how to overcome this kind of
situation, it will open a new door for business for us as well as the making of PPE.

As an export-oriented country, Bangladesh will, for the foreseeable future, have to depend on the
purchasing ability of foreign markets. However, this will not always be true, especially if we manage
to gain greater expertise in the raw material section. Furthermore, our local market has also seen an
upsurge in the purchase of clothes. In due time, our economy can stop depending on imports and
exports. This global pandemic is undoubtedly unprecedented, which compels governments to take
steps to minimize its effect. At this stage, defeating COVID-19 and saving lives should take priority
over business.

Cotton and yarn update

It’s time to work for a common goal to attain the optimum solution.
Yarn market situation

Except for few exceptions, most spinning mills in

Bangladesh are closed since 25th March to safeguard
from the global healthcare pandemic. Definitely,
this would hurt them financially but would save
many lives which is a responsible move. On top of
that many garments orders have been canceled

pressure from the yarn buyers. Luckily most of the
spinning mills are having nominal yarn stock and
cotton stock. So, it would not be difficult to start
production once the garments orders resume back.

But spinning mills within a couple of months would

The Story of Jhoot

• According to industry-insiders,
when they first started recycled
yarn production in 2003, there
was no modern technology.
But, considering the local textile
sector has been feeling the heat
of Chinese and Indian yarn, they
are now trying to diversify their
business. In this circumstance, they
now feel the need for modernized
factories to produce recycled
yarns from RMG jhoot which is
mostly subject to have timely
support from the government.

• Small hosiery traders do not get

soft loans or cash credit loans.
Therefore, they are compelled
to borrow money from other
sources at high-interest rates.
