PROSPECTS

Chilled Processed Meat Innovates To Become Healthier

Despite the World Health Organization alert towards the end of the review period about the
possible negative effects on health due to excessive consumption of the nitrites used in the
processing of meat, chilled processed meat remains the most important protein source in
processed meat and seafood. Players continue to innovate to make products healthier. For
example, Pietrán, Industrias de Alimentos Zenú’s higher-end brand ceased using nitrite-based
curing and conservation salts, a process which is added to its reduced salt and fat varieties.
Although the brand is high end, these moves reflecting the health and wellness trends are
expected to gradually permeate to other brands during the forecast period. Shelf stable
processed poultry, which recorded the strongest retail value growth in 2018 and is expected to
continue to do so over the forecast period, perfectly fits this trend.

Recovery After the Mercury Crisis

After the mercury alerts by the health authorities concerning tuna-based shelf stable seafood,
the crisis has been overcome and consumers are returning to shelf stable seafood, in which
tuna-based products are the most important in terms of sales in Colombia. The crisis also
brought new competitors, which leveraged the fact that the alerts were focused on a few specific
brands. New products include an increased number of private label ranges by
super/hypermarkets and newer discounters, as well as brands imported directly by major
retailers such as Almacenes Éxito in order to compete with the low-priced products of
discounters. Brands often have a seasonal performance and are not always available in the
market, considering the demand peaks are experienced in the Holy week, which takes place in
the first quarter of each year. This trend is not expected to witness any significant change over
the forecast period.

Chilled Processed Meat and Seafood Also Positioned As Snacks

The search for healthier snacking has encouraged brands from dairy and processed meat and
seafood to offer sizes and pack types in products suitable to be consumed as snacks. Seatech
International, for example, offers small personal sizes in metal cans with easy open lids
positioned as snacks including bases such as olive oil, a product which fits perfectly with the
health and wellness trend. Pietrán also offers chilled processed meat with lower fat contents in
personal sizes for the same purpose.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Industrias De Alimentos Zenú Continues To Lead

Industrias de Alimentos Zenú retained its robust lead in processed meat and seafood in 2018
due to the strong positioning of its Zenú and Pietrán brands. Zenú remains a reference in the
market due its innovation focused on offering consumers convenient and nutritious protein
sources. The company focuses on promoting its products as healthy snacks and launched
Pietrán Bites, a hybrid product between a snack and a main/side dish based on soy-protein,
demonstrating that it is willing to explore options beyond animal protein.

Seatech International Continues Its Recovery in 2018

After the mercury crisis, Seatech International, the brand owner of Van Camp’s, continued its
recovery in 2018. The company recognises that private label is booming but also that the quality
remains inferior and that consumers are increasingly aware of this. Product differentiation is
clear in processed meat and seafood and allows, more than in other categories, clear market
segmentation based on the needs and preferences of the target consumers.

Private Label Crowds Processed Meat and Seafood in 2018

Private label continued to achieve strong retail value growth in 2018. Both in processed
seafood and meat, retailers, including discounters, are offering their lower-priced products which
have been well received by consumers. Discounters usually focus on the largest and more basic
food categories, which supports the rapid development of their processed meat and seafood
portfolios.
