Methodology and notes
• This report is a product launch and sales analysis for the beer subcategory and initially presents a brief analysis of the alcoholic
beverages category. The report also dives deeper into the product launch, sales value and volume, positioning and flavor
trends in the beer subcategory.

• For the purpose of semi-annual NPD trends, the analysis covers the last 3 bi-annual periods: H2 2017 to H2 2018, where H2
2018 represents thesecond half of 2018.

• Geographic analysis covers six major regions – North America, Europe, Asia, Australia/New Zealand, Latin America, and
Middle East/North Africa (MENA). MENA covers all countries under Middle East and Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia under
North Africa.

• Indexed product launch numbers are obtained by assigning ‘100’ to the start year values and using 100 as the base calculating
all later values in proportion to the actual product launch numbers. CAGR stands for compounded annual growth rate.

Global beer’s NPD growth is higher than the alcoholic beverages category
• The key trends driving growth of the beer market include:
– Greater demand for craft beers highlighting artisanal brewing methods; local and organic launches
– Preference for super premium and premium products; availability of low alcohol and non-alcoholic versions
– Indulgent options with exotic and seasonal flavors (toasted marshmallow, lobster); sour and nitro beers

• During 2013 to 2018, beer’s NPD increased at 21% CAGR, while value and volume growth averaged at 3.1% and 3.8%,
respectively.

Europe, with an average 48% share, is the most active market
• Asia recorded the highest growth during 2016 to 2018.
– High disposable incomes, adoption of western culture, preference for beers over other alcoholic beverages such as whiskey, vodka,
presence of international brands, craft versions and non-alcoholic varieties are boosting NPD growth.

Europe, with a declining share, is the top region for sales value
• Growing popularity of craft and artisanal beers, super-premium launches, flavor innovation (coconut, verbena tea), seasonal
editions (winter warming chocolate beer), non-alcoholic products, limited editions and attractive packaging are influencing
sales growth in Europe.
• During 2016 to 2018, Asia registered the highest growth in sales value.

What's next - 5 things that could shape/impact the beer subcategory
Beer is by far the largest of the five alcoholic beverage subcategories in terms of NPD, and its share rose

53% in North America and to 56% in Latin America. NPD rose consistently over the 2013 to 2017 period,
