An abnormally swollen or dilated veins, especially in the legs is called as varicose

vein. People having the habit of long standing nature and people with weak heart
are usual victims of varicose veins. Two teachers, a traffic policemen, 2 workers
of long standing habits in cloth stores, 3 women standing more time for cooking
purpose and a doctor in standing posture for long time in operation theatre and a
retired Military Officer with weakened heart were treated for Varicose veins at
Acugem, Tirunelveli. Invariably, the following Varmam points were manipulated
as follows. Thivalaikaalam, Vilangu Varmam Mun Mudichuvarmam and Poonel
Varmam to enhance both heart and lungs of the patients were given thrice in a
week. To cure varicose veins Kondaikolli, Chunnappukaalam, Viruthi Kaalam,
Komberi Kaalam, Veeradangal and Araiyappu varmam were manipulated thrice
in a week. Third month onwards varicose veins are subsided in their swelling. At
the end of fourth month varicose vein disappeared for all patients except the doctor
due to workload, she is unable to attend the varmam treatment regularly. To maintain
the suppressed varicose veins all the patients were advised to use foot roller five
minutes for each foot both morning and evening.

Introduction:
An abnormally dilated veins in legs is called varicose vein. Arteries carry blood from the
heart to the all kinds of tissues. Veins return blood from the body tissues to the heart so that
blood can be re-circulated. To return blood to the heart, the veins in the legs must work against
gravity. Tiny-one way valves in the veins open as the blood flows towards the heart and then
close to stop blood from flowing backwards. When these valves in veins are affected by
malfunction, varicose veins occur. Blood pools in the veins resulted in an enlargement of veins
and become varicose veins. These veins appear blue or green because they contain deoxygenated
blood, which is in process of being re-circulated.

294
Causes of Varicose veins:
Women, especially older women, are more likely than men to have this varicose veins
problem. The causes are

1) Taking hormone replacement therapy.

2) Birth control pills may result in varicose veins.
3) Pregnancy and enlarged womb obstructs blood flow from legs into the abdomen.
4) Overweight puts added pressure on your veins results varicose veins.
5) Standing for long period of time causes pooling in veins of legs.
6) People with weak heart are usually having varicose veins.

Symptoms:
Green veins, swelling, scaling and irritation with discoloration of legs and eventually
extensive, chronic ulceration around the ankle. Sometime it appears as rings of veins. Generally,
these patients suffer from indigestion, gas and constipation.

Verma Texts and Varma Therapy for Varicose veins:

To treat varicose veins we should activate and strengthen the heart, lungs, lumbar regions
and lower limbs. Based on these the varma points are selected.

Among the twelve Varma Nadis-Thuvadhasa Nadis, Alamburudan Nadi originates at the
Kuthikaal and damage of alamburudan nadi leads to varicose vein, hip and leg pains.
(Shunmugom, 2008, 2015).

The following varma points are selected to treat varicose veins. Two teachers, a traffic
policeman, 2 workers of long standing habits, 3 women standing more time for cooking purpose,
a lady doctor spending more time in operation theatre and a retired military officer with weak
heart were treated for varicose veins at Acugem house, Tirunelveli. The primary Varma points
attempted are Komberi Kaalam, Veeradangal, Araiyappu, Mun Mudichu Varmam and Vilangu
Varmam and Secondary points attempted are Kondai Kolli, Chunnampukaalam, Viruthi,
Thivalaikaalam and Poonel Varmam.

296
Primary Points:
Komberi Kaalam - To relieve pain in lower limbs and protect muscles and veins of
the leg.

Veeradangal - To energise the lower part of the lower limb.

Araiyappu - To normalize varicose veins and relieve pain. It is a vital varma

point to treat varicose veins and should be treated in supine
postures.

Mun Mudichuvarmam- To regulate blood circulation in arteries and veins of the body.

Vilangu Varmam - To normalize the lungs function and to support heart function.
Kondai Kolli - To rectify blood related problems and energise the whole body
system.
Chunnappukaalam - To regulate blood circulation in brain, limbs and the body
Thivalaikaalam - To regulate panja bootha energy and normalize the functions of
the body through proper blood circulations.

Poonel Varmam - To energise the body and to relieve any blood clotting in the heart
and to regularize the heart functions (Shunmugom, N 2006)

The above varmam points were manipulated thrice in a week. The first month no any
noticeable improvement in the surfacial features of the varicose veins. Second month onwards
there were changes in the dark bluish colour of the legs of few patients. It was also observed that
in all the varicose veins patients there were stretching of veins towards normal positions. Finally
the varicose veins disappeared for all the patients except the lady doctor, due to over workload
she was unable to attend the Varma treatment regularly. The surgery attempted for varicose
veins are very rarely successful. To maintain the conditions of the suppressed varicose veins all
the patients were advised to use foot roller and rotate with mild pressure (Kalmathirai alutham)
on their each foot for five minutes both morning and evening. After six months I came to know
that all of them feel better and are maintaining their health with suppressed varicose veins.
Thanks to Varma divine energy.

Preventing Varicose Veins

Improving the blood circulation and muscle tone can reduce the risk of developing
Varicose veins. Avoid long period of sitting or standing. Avoid high heeled shoes. Low healed
shoes make calf muscles movements which is better for veins. Walking is a good way to improve

297
blood circulation in legs. Elevate the legs above the level of heart by lying down with your legs
resting on three or four pillows that will strengthen the veins of the legs and adapt the habit of
moving (walking) around at least every one hour to improve varicose circulation.
